The monument erected for the Haitian soldiers is awesome. The fact that the 1st King of Haiti, Henre Christophe fought there was eye-opening.

The purpose of planting the flag was to identify the point of attack. Other troops would advance with the flag or attack toward the flag. Before better ways to communicate it was the only way to maneuver the troops in the heat of battle.

not true. at this time, modern shells and bullets had not been invented, the most common form of artillery fire was a solid iron ball and sometimes made of other material. the only other ammunition widley available was heated shot, which was heated in a furnace to cause fire, and double shot, which was two solid shot chained together mostly used for tearing off the masts of ships in naval battles. for armies though, solid shot was mostly used with heated shot usually being used in forts for anti ship or structure bombardment.
