I have a question. I'm wanting to try hydroponics. Using organic solution I can make myself I've heard growing that veggies grown hydroponically grow Faster than veggies grown in the ground. Is that true? If so, how much faster?

I used to make my own paper way back in the day, too! It was fun to upcyle stuff & put it into my art! I've used the emersion blender but what worked better for me was to strain the water off the paper mix & use an old food processor. You can usually find an old, used one at a thrift store for about $8-10. Once the blades dull, they are pretty useless in the kitchen but they are handy for a lot of things in the art studio! 😉 Also for the screen, I've used an old wooden picture frame with tulle stretched over it. It's not as sturdy as poly screen BUT it's cheap & easy to find (especially if you're already in the craft store... 😉). Great video, Mike! Someday soon I'll be starting my garden. Produce is EXPENSIVE & Michael & I are doing our best to eat healthier. Thanks so much for your inspiration! ✌🏻💜😄

My grandbabies and I took a bunch of their recycled homework and made these. We popped it in a blender with water, rang out excess water and added mixed flower seeds. They would throw them everywhere in our yard and random beautiful flowers would grow. I've seen people make them in heart shapes for weddings and parties also. So fun.

I liked (loved) and subscribed less than 2 minutes in. You are exactly the kind of teacher we need. I was intrigued when I first saw the back of your T-shirt; we don't get duded up to do our gardening either. "No one should worry about having food to eat", and then showing them how to do it economically, shows you truly love people and want to help, so much so that you're willing to make a video to show them how. I don't comment much, but I want you to know that you are who I call 'real people' and I see you, and I appreciate you, and I love you, too.

Maybe 20+ yrs ago I made paper, too. Recycled egg carton... ❤ it! What if top of egg carton is cut off, corners cut to lay it flat, then cut to desired size/shape for easy, pre-mades? Then make more substrate with the bottoms as you did. ❤ how you think out of the box and reuse rather than waste.

I am incredibly impressed with your approach to hydroponic gardening. I have watched a bunch of your videos in the past few days and it's pretty obvious to me that you have an approach to hydroponics that works. I've got a few ideas that I'd like to share with you. I am a victim of the Grazon herbicide and got it in a very large batch of compost that I purchased. I made a decision to switch to hydroponics because my garden has been poisoned for two years or more. I am absolutely impressed. I have started several tests already and am eagerly awaiting the results. I am going face-down in your videos looking for more ideas. THANKS SO MUCH.

Hi from Australia! Thanks for the idea, Mike. 👏🏻👏🏻 Have just tried it. To save time, I didn’t make the frame but used things from the kitchen! - silicone mesh mat that I no longer use, placed on a cake cooling tray, resting over an oven tray. In spite of being a coarser mesh than yours, it is draining well and only water is draining through. I have posted photos on your Facebook page. I hope it works okay! Not sure if it’s too thick but then I can always try again as no costs were involved. 👍😀

@Keep on Growin' I did something similar, for hydro seed grass mixture. I used the egg carton water mixture, added in some food coloring, and soluble grass nutrient fertilizer. The difference is since i'm using it similar to "hydro mousse" I threw the dry mixture in a blender to fluff it up so it could be dispersed with grass seed mixture. We'll see how it turns out when I apply it this season. MAYBE mixing in nutrients with the water in your application might be helpful with the starts/seeding process?

I’ve really enjoyed watching your videos. Thanks for making, editing and publishing them. You are an inspiration Mike. Can you confirm your system minimises rainwater getting into the reservoir?
@KeepOnGrowin

Mine are all outdoors in N Florida. Keep all holes covered even if you harvest. The pool noodle minimizes it but rain still gets in. Not like a net cup of hydroton or rockwool though. My vertical garden is against a wall with a, 18" overhang, that helps too.

This is a great idea for reused paper pulp Blending them and then putting them back together required a lot of work. The way paper works is it is plyable when wet. Take some bricks squish the cardboard down between the bricks. Place the bricks /paper sandwich underwater for a few hours. Paper should stay stuck together but come out flat. Pull it out and let dry on a flat surface. It should be flat enough for your needs. Otherwise newspaper cut into the perfect size in how ever many layers you need will stick together after getting wet. I use newspaper for weed suppression. Sometimes they get wet from air moisture or even rain and they stick together. Box cutter Cut a stack of 4 layers of news paper into a smaller rectangle. Place between bricks to keep flat when wet. Place bricks/water under water Let dry on a flat surface. Might need a brick on top since it might curl as it dries. Will still wick up moisture even though it isn't a pulp. I'll experiment some more. Keep the ideas coming.

Newspaper breaks down well as a fiber source too....not sure about the ink though..... But, if you live near a newspaper printer, they have small rolls of clean paper that are basically what's left over when they change out the depleted huge paper roll on the big web type presses. I’m just starting my hydroponic journey. I also like to find different uses for things around the house. I embroider on a sewing machine that requires a stabilizer. I have a lot of “tear away” stabilizer that is paper. In fact after I complete the embroidery design I literally tear it from the back leaving a hole in the center of a 4x4 piece, it’s not good for anything else but to toss. Can this be used to propagate seeds? It absorbs well and doesn’t tear easily when wet. Tia. I’m enjoying your videos.

Do you think I could use a paint stirring bit on a drill to mix water and egg cartons?
@CJ-fs9gt
@CJ-fs9gt Жыл бұрын
Yes, it takes a bit longer for the carton to break up into slop but it works. The smaller the pieces that you tear off works faster. Also make sure to let the carton soak up the majority of water before using your paint blender so the prices break up easier and don't get stuck to the paint blender fins.

Mike, I have tried to grow outside, but the bug came and nibbled at most everything. How do you keep your plants bug-free?

Be gentle and practice. You can also cut the mat into small pieces with several spouts in each one.

That’s really awesome way to do it! Thank you for sharing your ideas! It occurs to me that when it comes to egg cartons, you could just cut out the flat parts and use them as they are, so that you only have to physically make the ones that come from the parts of the carton that are moulded to the eggs.

That’s what I’ve been doing! I thought that was what Mike had done in his micro green video. I tossed the leftover pieces to the side and wondered if I could turn it into pulp to make my own paper like we learned in elementary school. Like minds!
