I haven’t watched the rest of the video just yet (blew my mind with the prep Debate Save the Cat quote…didn’t realize that was even a direction you could choose. So many discussions on Save the Cat focus on the Decision-based debate). I wondered…is there a possibility you could have a Prep focused Debate with a Decision tucked in there somewhere? So a mix of both? So a “my mind is made up about this adventure, BUT there’s still things in the Normal World left unfinished or unsaid (so they have to decide what to do regarding these pieces)” So even though the choice is clear, there’s still decisions (albeit smaller ones) to make before they go. Onto the rest of the video! Enjoying this series immensely.

Glad you’re enjoying the series! And I don’t see why you couldn’t do that? Though I guess I’m of the opinion that you can do whatever you want with story structure 😂 but that would make sense to me. So, for example, they may have decided to accept being enlisted into the space army for the main plot but have to make a decision about say, “do I break up with my partner before I go?” sort of thing. I think the only thing I would say is that whatever choice they make there should matter in the grand scheme of the story or make some difference in their overall character journey. And that could help in creating tension/not boring the reader with the prep

In Blake’s book he gives the example of Legally Blonde for the second type of Debate. So when she gets dumped, she decides to go to Harvard pretty immediately, but the debate question is will she get in?

Oh!!! I like that example, thank you for sharing! Because then even though the decision is fast, there’s still something to create tension

Happy this could help clear up that vaugeness! I feel like some beats are really open to interpretation but I like creating a bit more specificity to work with since it helps my brain

I wouldn’t do more than one in a book personally, just because the catalyst is supposed to be that big life changing moment for the MC, and I would think that having a second one would cheapen the first a bit. BUT everyone has their own process and their own style, so I wouldn’t ever say “don’t do [x]” you can always try it and see how it works for you

@@LiselleSambury Thanks for answering. That really helped a lot! After thinking a bit I did find the catalyst in my story. It was a bit hidden :P And that is exactly the reason why I want to learn more about all of this, so I can make my stories better :D
