"It's vintage Coach all the way baby." My feelings exactly! Have you watched Tanner Leatherstein's channel? He is a great source of info on leather as he takes apart all kinds of bags and explains the quality, cost per materials and more. He himself is a trained leather worker. Great video!

Thank you for the info! I learned a little about leather from a former boss I had. She knew her stuff! We worked in a store. Let’s say a woman came in with a leather jacket. I’d be all dreamy about it. She’d say “it’s junk leather”. Then she’d explain why. She taught me all about Coach and Dooney. This was way back in the early 90s. …….. Where I live now they had a tannery. It closed before I moved here. Apparently it had to shut down because they let all the leather dye go into the creek which lead to Lake Erie here in NYS. You hear endless stories about the tannery and the glue factory next to it. …… I have watched videos by a leather guy, can’t remember his name. He will take a purse apart, mostly high end, and explain if it’s quality or junk. Keep on teaching us! ❤️

I was told Coach's Gloved-Tanned leather is a special process that's similar to the process used in making and conditioning a baseball glove. Like a baseball glove, the leather gets softer and my flexible over time. This explains why vintage Coach bags hold such great leather qualties.

Great video Autumn! No one has ever been able to figure out what “glovetanned leather” actually is. I do remember reading long ago that Coach developed a technique to make leather goods with leather that will break in like a baseball glove, hence the term “glovetanned leather”.

So informative. Thank you for all the research! I really enjoyed this leather education. And yes, there are a lot of unanswered questions and ambiguities (which is likely intentional on the part of various brands), but one thing is really clear to me after watching - it's no wonder that after becoming a huge fan of Coach glovetanned leather in the mid 1980s, and continuing to collect bags ever since, nothing has ever been as good, as beautiful or as durable for me as those original Coach bags.

Excellent video - prompted me to take a second look at all my Coach and Dooney and Bourke bags that I purchased in the early ’80s and ’90s - they are little gems now 😁 You would not believe the styles -leather quality and metal accessories on a vintage Dooney and Bourke - excellent compared to the shabby bags they make today - which look old-fashioned and poorly made! I am giving the luxury bags a rest and pulling out vintage 😊

I also often wonder what the material of the handbags is actually made of. Often the coating and paint is so thick that you can no longer see the leather underneath. I also find the question of how the bag is made interesting. I watched some videos of handbags being produced. I was disappointed at how much glue, and other materials are used for reinforcement (bonded leather, paper, cardboard, plastic?). This makes me want to cut the bags apart like Tanner Leatherstein. (Sometimes his videos are too fast). Wouldn't it be nice if the companies showed us exactly how the bag is made? Thank you for your interesting video! Your handbag collection is amazing!

"ALL Weather Leather" (AWL) by Dooney and Bourke, which was a very special naturally "shrunken" leather (same as Henry's). I'm not sure if their current AWL is processed exactly the same as it was decades ago, but it's still advertised as "shrunken" with an aniline finish.

Prada is the one that made Saffiano leather famous. Not sure if they developed it or just used it first in handbags. I'm also not sure if they have a copyright on calling it Saffiano. I've seen similar leathers used by other brands but don't know if they can call it Saffiano. I haven't looked into that but it's a good question.

I had to catch up on some of your videos and this might be out of context for this video but I wanted to keep it in one comment. Re:My Abusive Father Died || Complicated Experience with Death of an Abusive Parent I think anyone who is dealing with being in a toxic relationship, or not realising that they are in a toxic one needs to watch this. My condolences for the memories of your father that had a positive contribution. Family can be the hardest to truly distance yourself from, especially when you've grown up with them being part of your life. My experience that really resonated with your story is the people that I have let into my life, really unconditionally, but disrespectfully exploit my empathy and generosity. It took me a while for them to get to my breaking point, and I did exactly what you did, to just burn that bridge altogether. They still linger and oftentimes I would get a message about how they missed me, but it always carried a conditional request of some sort, be it asking for my time, money or a safe environment. I learned to channel that and let them serve as a reminder why I need to keep my distance. I don't think you were worried about your father's occasional taunts of bumper sticker messages and the creepy voicemails, I think they helped served as a reminder why he no longer deserves your respect. Re: One Year After Quitting Teaching and Starting My Own Business Thank you so much for sharing your journey, I am going through the exact situation and the unknown is scary. However, after much perseverance, things are starting to fall into place. If anyone hasn't seen the video, I highly recommend watching for some moral support in getting through curve balls and lemons that life really throws at you, I mean like Miss Trunchbull style shot put. Re: This video Your videos are always so relatable and I always need to tell myself to watch it until the end before rambling in the comments of things you might have missed because you're always so thorough with your research!! Box leather isn't actually exclusive to Hermès, Celine and Chloé, Dior have all used this in their collections. Another fun fact about the "graining" is that, natural grains are a result of the shrinking process when drying from the wet state, hence why the hide is also supple is the more it shrinks, the more it's scrunched up revealing the textural and characteristics of the skin. That is also why Box leather is so coveted because the skin has to be near blemish free during and post processing as each time it is 'ironed' the process has a chance to scuff, mark or unevenly colour the leather. So another leather that wasn't mentioned by Hermès is the Barènia, which were used for their saddles, and their first ever leather was untreated, vegetable tanned calfskin leather produced in the town of Barr in the northeastern part of France, and the reason why it's called Barènia. I think all leathers are now by-products due to the movement for fashion houses to achieve sustainability. Even with the exotics, which is why they have to all carry a CITES certification when sold to a consumer. At least, that's the goal of Animal welfare and ethics. I love Loewe leathers, it is an understated brand that has been around as long as Hermès, and their leathers are also quite notably luxurious. Although they haven't branded their own leather yet, you can see that it's not a two minute craft. Sorry about the long comment! But I didn't want to blow up your inbox with three posts, when you could get a big fat one per above. Your content is absolutely worth pouring your efforts into. Also to respond to the one about your family members/ close friends not understanding KZfaq as a full time career. Remember how long it took you to pick up something new, it's scary for them to open up to new ideas, give them time, they're no spring chicken anymore. As a teacher myself (in a past life) adults are the hardest to teach because they have so much going on there's hardly any space (and time) for them to give to learning anymore 🤥

Excellent video it answered a lot of questions I had. I was recently looking at FLORENTINE LEATHER by dooney and burke and pebbled leather, and they appear to be better leather than coach, but not that stylish plus the bags are heavier.
@AutumnBeckman
@AutumnBeckman 12 күн бұрын
Their Florentine leather appears to be vegetable tanned and aniline dyed. Given the weight it might be full grain. It's beautiful.

I haven't seen it yet but let me guess...subpar leather base with heavy coating of pigment and plastic. That's how you'd make a leather "all weather."

Really great video!Technical terms mixed in with marketing terms make things confusing. Vintage coach collector on YT linked to a really comprehensive article one time about the evolution of coach leathers over the years that alluded to the glove tanned leather basically being a term coined by Coach to represent genuine or split leather. For me that tracks. Coach still makes high quality bags but I don’t find the glove tanned leather itself to be as nice as the vintage full grain leathers. I have to think that if Coach was still using full grain leather they would be highlighting it not hiding it behind a cryptic term that only they use. Then again exclusivity may be a factor 🤷🏼‍♀️

I'd love to read that! Miles Cahn developed (with help) glovetanned leather for Coach in the 1950s so it's my understanding that all of their original leather bags were glovetanned leather. I'd like to know what processes they used to create it since it seems to be vegetable tanned and aniline dyed. My research says it was a different process. I suppose it could just be a slight variation to vegetable tanning.

Cool video! I didn't quite catch, what *is* vachetta? I mean, what makes something 'vachetta'? Is it the way it is tanned?
@AutumnBeckman

I never got a super clear definition of it. My understanding is it's vegetable tanned but fats are added during that process. Here's a more in-depth look I just found. www.carlfriedrik.com/magazine/vachetta-leather

I don’t think the words “glove tanned leather” mean anything. My vintage bags are, like you showed, beautiful full thickness leather with minimal finishes. Yet my most recent coach bag, which is similarly stamped “glove tanned leather”, feels like plastic. Honest to doG, I had to double check the new bag!
@AutumnBeckman
@AutumnBeckman 12 күн бұрын
The newer leathers stamped glovetanned are definitely different from Coach's original glovetanned leather. Maybe the new ones start with that process but then they add pigments and coatings.
