Don’t try the water first, always go with the extinguisher, water will not put out all of the different fires that can happen on a car. While it sucks the safest thing you could have done was use the extinguisher and get the powder and residue off as soon as possible. Glad you got everything taken care of safely

Last week an classic maserati 3500gt got severly damaged to fire in the Netherlands. It was an fuel fire, the fire brigade arrived quik enough to safe the car. But instead of using foam or powder they used water making everything much worse. It's crazy to think even the people who should be experts apparently lack what I consider to be common knowledge regarding fire.

Sam, consider a motorsports style extinguisher system; hard mounted extinguisher with nozzles in the engine bay and a trigger you can reach from your seat. It's always a risk in a crash and it's not too expensive to install

Water will help you burn the car down fast by spreading the fire, several videos on the internet proving this, stick to extinguisher 👌

Don't be a knob, use an extinguisher when it's needed and clean the residue off as soon as you can. I didn't know any better, and spent a lot of time with rust converter after my S15 caught fire on a mountain run and I left the powder sitting.
@brandonrichter69102 жыл бұрын
Get a co2 fire extinguisher, old school but will extinguish 95% of any fires you may encounter, will leave no residue, and carry one in the damn car

Check out Element Fire Extinguishers, they’re non corrosive and don’t expire like the powdered ones. They’re small like a flare, easy to keep in a car.

After cleaning up the extinguisher powder, invest in an automotive extinguisher, they are made for car fires and won't ruin stuff like a normal powder extinguisher will.
@moneybag75592 жыл бұрын
Not true man.... The difference between a household extinguisher and an automotive extinguisher is that the automotive variant is specifically designed to be more effective against automotive fluid fires. As any fluid that goes in a car is much different to any fluid that youll set alight in your own home. They are NOT designed to be safer on paint, or the effects of rust in anyway. The #1 use of a fire extinguisher is to put out fires. The #2 use of a fire extinguisher is to break a window, generally in the case of a fire.

Make sure you get all of that off really good Sam! I'm wondering if the reason it attacked the exhaust parts so quickly is because they were hot when the chemical hit it. Glad you saved the car!! Also glad to see you riding the bike again!

Sounded like an incredible amount of low-end torque from what it used to be! Good to find the issues 100% granted it got a little messy. Carbon dioxide fire extinguishers do so much better at not leaving behind a residue.
@random12341002 жыл бұрын
Water on that fire would have probably made it worse. The fire extinguisher is corrosive but that can be dealt with. Spreading the fire with water could potentially burn your car down. Think of it like throwing water on a grease fire in the kitchen. Oil reacts very similar.

Water on an oil fire will just spread the oil around to other areas. Please don't use it. Black band would be ideal, with carbon dioxide, rather than the chemical one you just used. But glad you were able to put it out quicker, every second counts in that situation.
