We have slowly put new units into our Bongo along with a rock n roll bed, cooker, sink, leisure battery, rotating passenger seat and a few other bits and bobs.It has been a real pleasure to do and not too difficult. Mazda Bongos are cheap and solid, most are permanent four wheel drive which works very well for the wild camping community. In our small experience of doing this we have come across some highly recommended folk who do a great job and even go the extra mile to help you! If you have any questions concerning parts used we will do our best to help.From what I can gather, doing a conversion yourself not only saves you a couple of thousand pounds but also is something of an investment. We want to thank Gill who offered to fit all the things that you see in this video (She would have done a proper job lol) My wife simply loves the Bongo and thats good enough for me, Looking forward to using it now...

Thanks. Fantastic machines, can't believe they don't still make them. Saw one down at the lake where we live. Looked like a brand new vehicle and not at all dated. Going to be worth serious money one day.

Tim, a brilliant job taking us through all the work to get your bongo ready for adventure. It must be pretty cool to know that it was your own work that made it into the wild beast it is today ;-) Love the seat reversal and the rock and roll bed, well hey :-) Great stuff :-)

Hi Gerry thanks for watching mate, it was a pleasure to do and fairly relaxing, the only reason it took as long to convert was saving up for the different parts, its just done over 2000 miles around Scotland with no issues, not bad for a 20 year old motor! :) Tim and Mandy

Excellent! You guys are definitely handy with the tools. Nice to see your father offering technical assistance and the whole family lending a hand. The conversion turned out splendidly. You and Mandy are going to enjoy the Bongo even more than you have in the past. You really put a lot of thought into the conversion. I especially like the driver and passenger swivel seats. Genius. Your power supply is indeed brilliant. Can't wait to see some of your adventures! Take care, friend.

Thanks Dwight it worked very well on the North Coast 500 and thats as good a test as anything. We bought a weeks worth of meat from our local butcher, put it in the fridge (Never used a mains supply) and it stayed fresh for five says, very impressed. As long as there is a journey between each nights stop it gives the leisure battery time to recharge. Thanks for watching bro :) Tim and Mandy

Very nicely done Tim and Mandy! Some of the bolts that were hard to remove might have had thread locker on them. It comes in different grades and manufactures use the highest strength grades on seats and seatbelt hold downs so they can't come loose. Beautifully done, and you can take great pride in knowing you did it yourself. Not only that but you know it's been done right. Hope you have many wonderful adventures! Safe travels, Ossie
@savedpurplecat
@savedpurplecat 7 жыл бұрын
Hi Ossie sorry for the late reply we have just got back from Scotland, the wee van did 2000 miles! I never thought about the bolts being extra stiff because it's for the seat belts but that makes perfect sense! We had a great time doing up the van and we have met a lot of people on holiday that have paid a great deal of money for their vans (much bigger) but are not happy at all, so yes it feels good knowing the only person you have to blame for any rough work is yourself lol keep well my friend Tim and Mandy

nice finished job there...handy to have a joiner on the team haha, i like the way the bed works, shame its a bit narrow, but then again thats your choice so its not wrong, you got the vehicle how you want it and its nice to know that when you build something to your own design that no one else has the same, the gas spigot is available as a wall/surface mount which may help with the one handed bit you mentioned...all in all i like the look of it, cheers. dave

Looks great Tim and Mandy, nice job. I've been looking at those New Dawn swivel seat conversions for a while, but couldn't work out if it utilized the existing seat or was a complete replacement, good to know now. Must say too this was a very well explained video especially of the electrical system, it can be bloody confusing trying to explain all that but you got it spot on. You are right about those single tube cabin lights, they aren't that great, if you can pick up the later model one with the u shaped tube they are much brighter and are an easy swap although they are around £45 second hand. I did the reverse and swapped my u shaped one for the single because my tube had blown and couldn't find just the bulb for sale anywhere and didn't wanna splash the cash for a whole light fitting when I only needed a bulb and could pick up the older model lamp with straight tube for around £12. Regret that now but I'm planning on using the original fitting and filling it with led strip lights as an experiment. Got the LED strip lights running under my high level cupboard as well as in all my cupboards and they work great. Anyway great vid, nice conversion and enjoy your travels. Atb Dave

Hi Dave, thanks for your comments. I was so impressed with yours and your trip to Bridge O Orchy that I knew it was the perfect all round cheap van. Gotto admit though I'm a little concerned about the engine (Had no problems) Got an alarm fitted on the water and am taking some Steel seal just in case. I tried the led strip lights which worked great and dimmed/changed to any colour but have since taken it out as it was a 240v one, could do with a 12v version. Hopefully doing the North Coast 500 so will be off line for a while (Hopefully) LOL could do with some advice on a couple of things at some point mate, take care :) Tim and Mandy
@playing_in_trafic
@playing_in_trafic 8 жыл бұрын
I wouldn't worry to much about the engine but yeah good move on the water alarm, good idea to have an occasional look at the hoses and also check the metal pipes under drivers side running to the rear heater, mine rusted out there. For 12V led strips, I got a 5 meter roll of 12 volt led strip off ebay for around £7 cut them up soldered wires to ends, which is a bit fiddly, and just wired them to a switch off a fused supply and they work great especially in the cupboards. Happy to assist with any questions you have bud. All the best on the North Coast 500, hope the weather is bearable. Atb Dave

Thanks for the video, very informative. I noticed that you left the original interior panels in. Presumably the vehicle was insulated from new behind those panels. When it comes to attaching the cupboards to the vehicle, the bases can be attached to the wooden floor you installed but how did you secure the cupboards further up without drilling into the bodywork?

At 12:56 you can see that the front passenger seat is turned 180 degrees. Can you tell me if in some video you can see in more detail the details of the seat reversal mechanism?

Steve the back box came undone on a 2000 mile run around Scotland, apart from that it worked very well, it's called a bakrak but they need to wield the joints better Tim and Mandy

yikes. spray some penetrating oil in there. tighten the bolt back. then loosen a bit, then tighten. Eventually they will come but you seem like the impatient type.
