Hey everyone, I'm here with an incredibly special video that not only ties to my family's legacy but also contributes to a vital conservation effort. Today, I’m doing something I’ve never done before-legally catching and keeping an egg-bearing lobster. This might sound shocking as it’s usually very illegal to disturb these crucial breeders of the lobster population. However, this mission is all in the name of science and sustainability.
Join me as I partner with the Bar Harbor Oceanarium to support their hatchery program, an ambitious project aiming to hatch and raise about 30,000 lobsters. This isn't just about expanding the population; it's about learning, preserving, and ensuring a future for the species. The egg-bearing lobster, affectionately known as the ‘mother lobster,’ will be under the expert care of the Oceanarium’s team to safely bring thousands of baby lobsters into the world.
One of the most heartwarming parts of this adventure is the personal connection. My grandfather was the last in our family to aid a Maine lobster hatchery program decades ago, and now I have the honor to contribute in my own way. It’s a full circle moment this Mother’s Day, bringing new life and hope to our lobster populations.
Once the eggs have successfully hatched, and the babies are stable, we plan to return the mother lobster safely back to the ocean. And yes, if all goes well, I’ll be keeping one of the baby lobsters to raise myself, documenting every step of its growth for you all.
Follow this journey on a day dedicated to mothers of all species, and see how we're helping ensure the survival of these incredible sea creatures. For more behind-the-scenes and educational content from the team at the Oceanarium, be sure to follow them on Instagram [@oceanariumeducationcenter]( / oceanariumeducationcenter .
Happy Mother’s Day to all, and here’s to a future flourishing with Maine lobsters!

@jujub4553 where I live we have multiple lobster hatcheries.... 🦞 As a kid growing up with lobstermen, fishermen, clammers, oyster farmers, and carpenters in my family, I ate seafood more often then beef or chocken. Plus we have all sorts of fish/lobster hatcheries !! We went to the hatcheries as field trips in elementary and middle school, tbf we also visited cranberry bogs, studied the multiple habitats for oceans, marshes, and ponds , went on tide pool study field trips , whale watches, duck boats, etc. Kinda never considered there wouldn't be fish/lobster hatcheries in some places. Simply because it's so common place for me! With love, from the 💪 iykyk 😅

Letting money get between a friendship??? Not cool, Jacob. You know you could have broke Keith off a little better than you did. I wondered why he disappeared from your videos all of the sudden. But to find out it was about money and not showing him appreciation for what you now have? That sucks. The first month you were paid $20k and only gave him $600? Come on, bro. You wouldn't have this at all if he hadn't turned you on to it. You were doing flyfishing videos on KZfaq that no one watched before he suggested you start the lobster content and introduced you to Tiktok. Maybe you could have negotiated a contact of one large payment so he got some of the blessings too and from then on handled everything on your own, but instead you just ran with the success ahd forgot your friend... you saw dollar signs and got a bit greedy and completely forgot about how you got here to begin with. ...Remember, you can't serve both God and Mammon-- and the money doesn't go with you when you leave. This whole situation really makes me sad. God tested you with you a blessing, and you failed miserably. But you can make it right, its not too late... Or dont, it is in your hands now, but when the karma comes back around, understand that you had a chance to be truly humble and appreciative but got lost in your newly found ego-boosting success. It will be whatever it will be. I just think you're better than this. I truly hope you prove me right. 😢

I always wondered how many of the eggs reached full maturity. I love the idea behind this program. Taking a few pregnant lobsters out of circulation gives them the chance to have babies who reach maturity while not massively & negatively impacting the other ocean creatures who live off the eggs as sustenance. Good job.

Only around 2 of them will make it from what I've read, the fact that this program wasn't expanded and kept up the past 30 years is a shame. We really need to take care of our fisheries better, they're in really bad shape and aren't getting better anytime soon.

@@robertharper3754 Politics and funding. Politicians tend to not care about stuff like this because it doesn't benefit them directly. So with that, funding gets cut off and the program can't survive unless they get tons of donations. And most people only really care when the animals are four legged and furry.

@@WastedTalent-, sad but VERY true. You would think with how much the fisheries are worth from a financial viewpoint that there would be more work done to keep them healthy and abundant. They do this with lake fish... alot. I've lived in both Minnesota and Wisconsin, the two states with the most lakes in the lower 48. Trout, salmon, bass, pike, sturgeon, walleye, muskie and steelhead are all stocked. This is not just for gaming purposes but to bring balance back to the ecosystems. It's really had dramatic positives over the last 25 years and they've learned a lot to get better at it.

Hunters, too. People don't realize that game hunters are a crucial part of conservation. Deer populations get out of control and disease spreads (Chronic Wasting Disease for one) that can infect livestock and other animals. It can wipe out entire populations of elk, moose, and deer in a locality. Aside from spreading disease, large populations of deer can destroy corn fields. There aren't many or enough natural predators that can keep the population in check, especially when there are unimited food sources in that field over there.

This sounds like the head start programs we do for some at risk turtle species. The eggs are incubated and the hatchlings are kept for one year. The single year leads then to gain weight, their shell can harden and they’re not a bite size snack anymore. Even just that one year makes a huge difference to numbers reaching sexual maturity. Love this idea!

I can’t wait to see how this goes I breed aquarium fish all the time and some fish parents are horrible parents and will eat the eggs.I steal the eggs put them in separate breeding tanks and hatch and raise them most aquarium fish lay hundreds of eggs I think for the same reason lobsters do because the survival rate is so low. I love seeing them go through all the stages of growth and then I keep my favorites out of all the babies and then I give the rest away to friends in the hobby. Thanks for making this video I can’t wait to see this play out!

Honestly it's great to see that you're doing this, and I'm surprised that the older program was even shut down. I've had an interest in the idea of aquaculture and active fishing hatcheries to help boost populations of both wild fish and ones used for commercial fishing, ever since about a decade ago when a startup announced a massive ball-shaped tank for fishery fish designed to be suspended along the coast in deeper water, giving the fish more space to grow and thrive and more protection from predators while also benefiting from local currents to help clean out waste and even shift in new food. It ultimately just makes sense both commercially and environmentally to start being more active with our aquaculture efforts, I can't wait to see how progress goes with this hatchery.
