In this final video from our European adventure, we take you to yet another magical place dedicated to turtles and tortoises. This time we’re in the south of France but this facility isn’t just a public refuge for our shelled friends, it’s also where some monumental work is being done medically for them. Watch as our friend Stephane repairs the severely damaged shell of a wild tortoise that was struck by a brush cutter!

Who is Garden State Tortoise? 🧐
However you made it here, thank you and welcome to Garden State Tortoise. Garden State Tortoise is home to hundreds of animals from all around the world. We are a family dedicated to adventure, conservation of wildlife, and all things nature. We are a reptile rescue and breeding facility for more than ten years, offering refuge to those who need it, and working everyday to protect the beautiful world of reptiles in any way we can. Here on our KZfaq channel you will be able to join us on our animal adventures while learning how to care for, protect, properly identify, feed and even breed many species of turtle, tortoise, snake and lizard. We even work with frogs and salamanders! We hope you enjoy our videos and help us share them with the world so we can continue to educate people of all ages about herpetology.

I'm a volunteer turtle rehabber and have helped turtles with hind end weakness due to trauma with physical therapy. I fill a plastic bin with lukewarm water and clip a theraband onto each side of the bin(or I just hold it). Then I set the turtle onto the theraband so its legs are in the water but most of the carapace is still out. Usually, the turtle will start move the legs some and build strength. If not, I just move the legs and try some passive range of motion. I would do this for a few minutes each day. It seemed to help!

One of our Russians survived a dog attack that left a similar hole in her shell; you could see her breathing. With some help, she fully recovered and her shell healed. They are amazingly resilient creatures.

I recently took in a male marginated tortoise. The previous owners were honest, saying he wasn't in the best condition, but it was worst than I imagined. Deformed, stunted for an 8yr old tortoise, had issues keeping his business in, and can't use his back legs. A more natural diet and sunlight has helped. I also constructed him a little wheelchair. He's starting to use his back legs with the combination of the wheelchair and me just working his legs in the motion he would walk naturally.

I rescued a large adult yellow slider this morning. It was on a moderately busy highway on the jersey shore (Rt 72). None of the cars would slow down or stop so i could get him. After about a min i was able to quickly run to the middle of the road grab him and get out. I took him in the direction he was headed and walked about 30 feet in cause thats the distance i heard you say on one of your videos. I even got to see a second one when i was walking him into the woods. 😊

My dog went bonkers when he saw an Eastern box turtle, which was thankfully on the other side of the fence. It was the only time he's ever seen one, and seemed perplexed at why this odd little creature wasn't reacting to his obnoxious barking. I brought my dog inside, and a little while later, our very attractive guest was gone.

How great to see this again! I have been there with my dad in 2005-2006 when there were extreme forest fires in the area! I even still have the information folder from them! It's amazing to see you guys there! The next day, we went into a local forest and found a BABY! Western Herman's tortoise in the wild! We took a couple of pictures and sent him on his merry way! I knew it was special to find one in the wild, but, at that age/time I had no idea how extremely rare that was, judging by your reaction of your last video! I'm so happy to have been there and have experienced finding a baby in the wild! I love you guy's work!

That's quite a hole there where you can see the tortoise breathing... they must be very resilient to be potentially able to heal so the back legs can work for them again... wow... so interesting to see what this place does for the turtles and tortoises. Enjoyed your European adventure!

Chris & Casey! What a magnificent time you are having over in the South of France. What an incredible learning experience for you. I'm sure you know a lot but have learned so much more about turtles from the other side of the world. The collaborating of minds across the world is definitely a plus for the turtle community. Such an incredible man that made this sanctuary. It's always interesting to me to see people across the world coming together with one thing in mind to save the turtles/tortoises of the world! 🐢 🐢🐢🐢🐢🐢❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️

Lawn guys kill turtles all the time. I ran over one once as a kid mowing the lawn with a push mower. Ever since that moment I've been active in education. If most lawn companies raise their cutting deck, these guys will have a chance and the grass grows greener if you let it grow a bit higher.

I loved what you said about it not being the poor invasive animals' fault that they've been bred and "freed" in non-native habitats. I always felt that anger at starlings, pigeons, and turtles, etc. was misplaced. Blame the humans for meddling with nature, always thinking we/they know better. We don't.

Chris do you mind explaining how those red eared sliders become invasive? Is it because they fight for food? Is it because they breed? Maybe need a special video for it
@linseyt7951
@linseyt7951 7 күн бұрын
If I'm correct they get dumped so much in Europe and they mostly eat everything they see and in the hotter country's they can breed too so that makes that they overrule the species that do belong there
@The_Crucible714
@The_Crucible714 7 күн бұрын
Yes, all of the above. They are a very gregarious and cold tolerant species which have become invasive world-wide. I recently saw a video from Japan where they have established themselves.

questions seriously are there any tortoises in the United Kingdom anywhere or Ireland? I've never heard of any I just was wondering if there are any Native to the lab of the United Kingdom and Ireland The British Isles that we put it that way
@The_Crucible714
@The_Crucible714 7 күн бұрын
I know that they have reintroduced the European Pond turtle to several locations in the UK where they were originally native in the past. I believe that Red Eared sliders are invasive in the UK. I also heard that a breeding colony of Eastern Box turtles have also established themselves somewhere in the English countryside. While I think it’s quite possible that has not yet been totally confirmed.
