Buzludzha is the biggest communist-era monument in the Balkans. Built on a mountaintop in Bulgaria in 1981, it's since fallen into ruin and its very future is at risk. Originally published at - www.rferl.org/...

That’s an amazing structure although dedicated to communism. Some things should remind us always of the horrors of the past and not to repeat history. Why rip down statues. Who gives them the right to do that. Really makes me wonder who these people are and their morals and values. Their outlook on life and the living. Just disrespectful and shows they never really know the value of earning something and working hard for it. IMO. Great video though. I love history!

I guess if I called to destroy this monument......it would be different than tearing down capitalist slave owning statues..?

Not only is it a complete waste of time and money, it’s an insult to all those who were persecuted under communism. Let it rot.

I respect your opinion. Nowadays, being able to be used for other purposes, this monument was buit hard by thousands of people with the people's money. It wad a great communist project to represent the way people thought and acted at that time. And on the day that it finally finished its construction, thousands of those same people were happy with the result and the hardwork they created during those hard years. This monument served as many international meetings, and many of them were related to children from different countries to get to know the general culture there. This monument is a capsule time. It represents communism. It represents the ideas the ideas of politiciand and their respective followers. It represents a part of Bulgarian history. It represents the past. Not only were created new jobs for the people who went to work to restore this monument, as it sends messages from the past. We have to inform ourselves and look for learn about our countries' past, instead of choosing to be ignorant, regardless of wheter it is bad or good. That's how a society evolves. That's how history works.

I wouldn’t say that. It should be preserved not to encourage communism but to show what it was like in the darkest of days for Bulgaria. Every country has dark pages. Those can’t be overlooked and should be remembered.
