Two-time Academy Award®--winner Emma Thompson and fellow double Oscar®-winner Tom Hanks top line Disney's "Saving Mr. Banks," inspired by the extraordinary, untold story of how Disney's classic "Mary Poppins" made it to the screen.
When Walt Disney's daughters begged him to make a movie of their favorite book, P.L. Travers' "Mary Poppins," he made them a promise-one that he didn't realize would take 20 years to keep. In his quest to obtain the rights, Walt comes up against a curmudgeonly, uncompromising writer who has absolutely no intention of letting her beloved magical nanny get mauled by the Hollywood machine. But, as the books stop selling and money grows short, Travers reluctantly agrees to go to Los Angeles to hear Disney's plans for the adaptation.
For those two short weeks in 1961, Walt Disney pulls out all the stops. Armed with imaginative storyboards and chirpy songs from the talented Sherman brothers, Walt launches an all-out onslaught on P.L. Travers, but the prickly author doesn't budge. He soon begins to watch helplessly as Travers becomes increasingly immovable and the rights begin to move further away from his grasp.
It is only when he reaches into his own childhood that Walt discovers the truth about the ghosts that haunt her, and together they set Mary Poppins free to ultimately make one of the most endearing films in cinematic history.

I have to admit, I have never cried so much at a movie as I did at "Saving Mr. Banks." There were moments were I was like "Yeah, they embellished" that and it was obvious that they couldn't show everything, but God that Premiere scene.... when the guy dressed as Mickey offers her his arm, I lost it. I was crying so loudly the lady next to me thought I was dying.

Omg that movie was omfg. I don't have words to describe it. It was so good I wish there was a later bus so I could walk right back in and see it again. Tom Hanks was amazing as Walt Disney. I will forever wish that I had lived in his time so I had gotten a chance to meet him. Emma Thompson is amazing in the role of P.L Travers. I admit to singing in the audience with the songs like Let's Go Fly A Kite and A Spoonful Of Sugar. I also admit to singing them on the bus on the way home lmfao. I cried so much at the end of the movie. It takes a lot to make me cry at movies. Usually when I find a movie good I applaud it when it's good. This time the WHOLE CINEMA APPLAUDED. It was so amazing. Best choice for movie :)

In 1961, Walt Disney invited P.L Travers, the author of "Mary Poppins", to his California studios to DISCUSS THE POSSIBILITY of acquiring the rights to her book - a discussion that Mr. Disney had initially sparked twenty years prior. ("MR BANK")!?

At the time that Mary Poppins was filmed in 64, the conventional wisdom was that Julie Andrews was doing the movie as a "consolation prize" for not being cast as Eliza Doolittle in the film adaptation of "My Fair Lady". Ironically, 50 years later, both films have stood the test of time and remained popular, and, of course, Andrews won her Oscar for the role.

I think the biggest surprise in this movie was Colin Farrell. Tom Hanks, Emma Thompson and Paul Giammatti are always in the running for some kind of award, but I really think he managed to steal the show in Saving Mr. Banks. He also showed a lot of range I've never before seen in any of his movies as the well-meaning, but alcoholic father. Furthermore, I think it's a travesty he didn't even get an Oscar nomination for Best Supporting Actor.

The movie is from the Disney Company, so it isn't allowed to be too real, beside, this company used to transform stories to make them more kind. Would Disney turned an Edgar Wallace book into a movie, we would be amazed, how children compatible it could be.

I believe it was in Iron Man 2 (before Marvel was Disney methinks) that he penned a tune used at the World's Fair and over the closing credits. It sounded so much like A Great Big Beautiful Tomorrow I thought "That sounds like a Sherman Brothers work." And it was! Kewl beanz!

I'm watching this film online right now and I'm going to see how it plays out in as far as an accurate portrayal of Walt goes. Obviously I never knew the man, but I had seen a film titled The Dark Side Of Disney….and he didn't come off too well. Don't get me wrong here. I LOVE WDW and take my kids about 15 times a year, but the film I mentioned painted him as a racist, a failed animator who took credit for the work of others and very unfair to his employees. We'll see how this compares. More later.
@JeevesReturns

Well, I've finished it. More than a bit contrived as the portrayal of Walt goes, but that understanding faded away with each moment of being involved (yes, you become involved in a deep way) in the story and it's beautiful, almost romantic, ending. 5 out of 5 stars.
@cocodakilla

Then you are a sheep for believing it. He's been proven to not have been racist anti Semitic or misogynistic. His workers were the best paid in the business. READ UP on the strike instead of watching KZfaq videos. All the body languages of those ex employees showed me that they were lying. He was treated awfully by his workers who went on strike. They were given bonuses and no one in the business did that. They accused him of many things but funny how they lost in the end. He was bitter about the ordeal but allowed workers to return if they wanted to. Babbet who started it all off even came back. Hypocrisy at its Finest. Floyd Norman and other black workers were fine with him. Not once did he show he hated different colours. He allowed females to progress before the war and then let them go into loads of other roles after the war. After they'd been seen useful by the rest of society. Before the war no dad would allow his daughter to be educated properly.
@cocodakilla
@cocodakilla 8 жыл бұрын
Oh and after marriage they'd have kids and wouldn't work. This was pre war. His secretary was a woman. Something which was always a job for males. His wife worked. His daughters. He adopted a girl instead of boys to outdo her. Funny how people watch a few hateful docs but don't question motives. If Walt was evil and paying them badly etc Why did those who claimed all this return. He also didn't take claim to other people's work. He thought up Mickey Mouse and got ub do draw. He himself drawer less as the years went on. His wife named Mickey. It was a joint effort. Not once did he say. MY WORK. Nor did he act like he did things alone. His name was the thing people saw. It doesn't take much research to know who drew the work. I suggest you read up. You question motives. And stop watching docs made to slander someone who should be respected in America. He was the enemy of sexualisation. This is why he is still insulted to this day. He supported family values and love.

But he DID sign artwork that he did not actually draw himself and he was a well known anti-semite. Like I said, I love just about anything Disney related, but perhaps its you who are dodging the truth. What are your references for your information? You heard and want to believe?
@cocodakilla
@cocodakilla 8 жыл бұрын
JeevesReturns well known Semite? You believe the lies sent out by babbet and the strikers? They had a MOTIVE. He hired Jews. The loyals had nothing bad to say. The two brothers who made the music were Jewish. The surviving brother said he treated them like sons. He wasn't anti semetic at all. Look it up. There is SO MUCH info in his defence. I wish I was on a computer. I'd bombard you with links. Signing artwork that wasn't his ? That really is nit picking lol. His artists did sign work too. He was the owner of a huge company and a genius in his own right. He had something huge. That is why people want to ruin him. He wasn't an anti Semite at all. In the 40/50s after realizing a certain studios had those beliefs he moved away from them.

This film is ok I suppose. The flashbacks are intrusive, cliché & predictable at best, which tends to fragment the film & ebbs any sort of flow. It's a shame they didn't just start the film with one chapter - The story, & then do the old "44 years later". It would have felt a lot less disjointed. It's a poignant film, & has bearing on a lot of tragedy that happened to many cast members after. Including the Sherman Bros who despised each other eventually, Matthew Garber (Michael) who died very young aged 21, David Tomlinson's dwindled career, Julie Andrews throat disaster, & of course Walt himself who died just 2 years after from Cancer. Tom Hanks is good, & the 2 who played the Sherman Bros were excellent. Thomas Newman's music felt very out of place in parts which is probably due to how everyone's kind of getting fed up with hearing his same old sound; Bass & Mallets!! The major issue I have with this film is that like Prometheus, it shoves ALL the clandestine & secret ironies, inner meanings, & philosophy. And if the title wasn't blatant enough, they shove it in your face throughout the film. So instead of Merry Poppins being a dynamic story of character ramification & multiple view points, it's now common knowledge that it's about Banks. Why do they have to keep spoiling classics?
