People say "I've heard Veterans had to leave the theater at the opening scene because how real it portrayed D-day". I was in college with my gf Nancy at the AMC in Westlake (Austin) TX and no shit, 5 minutes in, an old Vet wearing his unit ballcap stumbled towards the exit but couldn't make it before breaking down in tears. His elderly wife hobbled after him and then just hugged him until they left. No one said a word for the rest of the movie besides some muted cheers. Never forget.

If the captain had not taken out the nest of Germans they would have taken out a whole platoon of Americans who would follow. He saved lives. The weight of making such decisions of a higher ranking officer is a duty that comes with a cost. He knew that. You have to understand the rules of war. Upham learned a valuable and costly lesson. You can't pamper the enemy. It cost the lives of his fellow soldiers and his captain. When the captain said, "Earn This" is a message for All of us...

1. Many WWII vets left the theaters because the D-Day battle scenes were so realistic. 2. The German Captain Miller was talked into letting go is the same one that killed him. Upham finally put him down. 3. The story Ryan tells Miller about the last time he saw his brothers was made up by Matt Damon. He was told to say something interesting, so he did, and it was kept in the movie. 4. There really was a USS Sullivans(DD- 68) dedicated to the brothers lost on one ship. That's why all brother soldiers/sailors from one family can't be assigned to the same command. 5. I did 24 years in the US Navy. My favorite character is Private Jackson/sniper and my second favorite is Sargent Horvath. RIP Tom Sizemore😇 6. Sizemore also played Boxman in "Flight of the Intruder", a movie I'm in briefly.

The scene before the assault on the radar nest is a great example of leadership breakdown. From "Who's going left ?" inquiry. To, "When was the last time you felt good about anything ?" insult. Then, so people wouldn't resent the captain, we see the captain break down and cry.

Yes: in some battlefield skirmishes, usually when the units are far from their main force, the deceased are buried where they fought, and the graves are marked. Depending on where the gaves are located, the bodies will be relocated elsewhere (the cemetary at the beginning, is the cemetary on the cliffs above Normandy), or, in some cases, they may be left where they were originally buried.

His hand was shaking due to all the mental stress and trauma he had suffered up to this time in the various battles and beach landings he had been a part of. Upham was paralyzed by fear. yes and the other thing to remember is that most of the troops assigned to hit the beaches had actual months long training with the landing craft at beaches in Britain under live fire sounds etc. some were combat vets already also. to take someone who is literally assigned to drawing maps and translating & throw them into full on combat would be an immense shock, not everyone does so well with that.

The story is based on the Sullivan Brothers, 5 brothers who were on the same ship, that was torpedoed by the Japanese during the Battle of Guadalcanal, and all 5 brothers were killed. After that, the military instituted the Sole Survivors Act, in which siblings are not allowed to enter combat in the same unit.

At the time (and possibly still today), the first 45 mins was one of the most tense, troubling, insane, and sad segments of a film I had ever seen. It REALLY put you there with the men. My grandfather fought in this war for the British (he did not storm the beaches, but was a prisoner of war in German occupied France), and even though I only met him once when I was too young to remember him, I still think about what he and all the soldiers who fought evil must have felt and experienced during this war. Caroline @28:10 "What is wrong with you!" Spielberg has said the character of Upham, and his inability to help Ryburn, was how he imagined himself would perform in combat. Upham is a translator/ Clerk and has no combat experience. Spielberg's guess is that most men (and women), who have never literally had to fight for their lives, in hand-to-hand combat - notwithstanding the natural fight/ flight' response - would suffer the same paralysis and inability to function.

One of the most accurate and horrific portrayals of the combat that took place during the D-Day landings. In answer to your question, NO, bullets do not actually penetrate into the water like they did in the movie. They break up on impact, this was a myth that was thoroughly tested by the Mythbusters on the Discovery Channel years ago. One of the very few mistakes in this movie, I assure you.

Wade is the next man shot. After Wade dies, Captain Miller takes the letter, and then he's shot. At the close of the film, we see Reiben take the letter from Captain Miller, signifying that he's going to die at some point in the future. Caparzo's letter probably never reached his family.

The troops in this film went ashore in just about the worst place among all the Normandy beachheads. Omaha had cloud cover during the 24 hours of air bombardment the day before, so it wasn't very effective, and the same cover caused problems dropping paratroops where they could do some good. And the heights gave the Germans a huge advantage, which they took advantage of by creating overlapping fields of machine gun fire. This beach had some of the highest casualty counts, some parts being 95%. Other beaches had very few, and when you see pictures of them, you see no cliffs, just low dunes to advance over. You take a beach like Omaha by pouring in troops and hoping some of them survive to reach the enemy emplacements. It's not unlike ants that fight fires by pouring their bodies on it. The general who ordered the mission was a very sharp and feeling man, and he was eventually put in charge of rebuilding Europe after the war.

Just a heads up for those saying not to be so hard on Upham, Cowardice is a crime under the Uniform Code of Military Justice, punishable by corporal punishment and up to the death penalty. In combat, Miller or Sizemore's character would have had every right to shoot him, just like the one who threatened to desert at the radar nest. Speaking of the radar nest scene, the military is not a Democracy. Having an argument over who's going where doesn't happen IRL. The medic would have NEVER taken part in the assault on the nest in actual combat. He was their only medic and it was well known that the Germans and Japanese targeted medics on purpose.

"Hell, these guys deserve to go home as much as I do. They've fought just as hard." "Is that what I'm supposed to tell your mother when she gets another folded American flag?" "You can tell her that when you found me, I was with the only brothers I had left. And that there was no way I was deserting them. I think she'd understand that." If you like this movie, might I suggest The Fighting Sullivans (1944) as well. You should react to Sullivan (1997) by Caroline's Spine in the same video, after the movie (the song will have more meaning after the movie). This is, of course, just a recommendation. Fun Fact: Steven Spielberg cast Matt Damon as Private Ryan because he wanted an unknown actor with an All-American look. He did not know Damon would win an Oscar for Good Will Hunting (1997) and become an overnight star before the film was released. Irish Invasion Fact: The Omaha Beach scene cost $11 million to shoot, and involved up to 1,000 extras, some of whom were members of the Irish Army Reserve. Of those extras, 20-30 of them were amputees, issued with prosthetic limbs, to play soldiers who had their limbs blown off. Historical Fact: Upham's (Jeremy Davies) shoulder patch, a blue and grey "yin yang" symbol, identifies him as a member of the 29th U.S. Infantry Division. It symbolizes the fact that the division was composed of units from Virginia and Maryland, who fought on both sides of the American Civil War. Sonic Warfare Fact: Cinemas were instructed to up the volume when they showed the film, as the sound effects play such a crucial part in its overall effect. I remember this, because the theatre I was had surround sound and that tank approaching came from EVERY speaker. I was having a small mental panic attack (I was 17 at the time and I just signed up to join the US Army, so cut me a little slack) leading to the final battle.

Re: Surrender. It's supposed to be accepted...but if you fight hard and kill a lot of the enemy then only surrender when at the last moment...do you think the friends of the dead will instantly calm themselves? Me either. The man Captain Miller set free: You do not have to accept surrender if you can't enforce it. You don't have to let him go pick up a gun and have another go at you. This means that behind enemy lines prisoners don't have to be taken. Of course, killing an unarmed man in cold blood isn't something most men can do. Failing that, they could have bound him(tightly) and left him to take his chances with either dying of thirst or follow-on troops capturing him. As dire as all that sounds, fortunately, prisoners have tremendous value. Sometimes entire missions are about prisoner snatches. So there's a lot of pressure to accept surrender and treat prisoners relatively(expect an asswhipping) well. Finally, if you get the rep for not taking prisoners...then everyone fights to the death. Not what you want.

The first Ryan was played by Nathan Fillion. He played captain of a ship who smuggles cargo while also taking passengers. It lasted one season. It was also produced by Jim Henson productions which showed off puppetry. The show is called Firefly.

May i suggest a movie or two for you? The movie "Taking Chance" is based on a true story about a young American Marine killed in action. The other movie, "Radio" is also base on a true story. It is about a very timid handicapped man and a high school football coach. A very heart warming and true story.

Cinematically beautiful but full of historically inaccurate details. First, the bullets ( we call them rounds) don't have the penetrative power to even scratch your skin under water. Second, the anti-boat obstacles were facing the wrong way. Third, there were no bunkers of that size where the real 2nd Rangers landed at Omaha. Next, there were DD (Dual Drive) tanks that made it ashore at Omaha. The distance to from the German positions to the water was much further. And the biggest mistake of them all was this was meant to be seen through the eyes of Ryan, the one kneeling at the Normandy cemetery, and he never made a beach landing at Omaha because the 101st Airborne parachuted into their drop zones inland far from the beaches! So, while brutally graphic and certainly representative of how many men died making the beach landings on D-day, that's all the movie gets right.

1:50 indeed it is amazing, and what’s truly saddening is just how many of this new generation are either incapable or actively refusing to acknowledge and comprehend it. My paternal grandfather was turned away from trying to sign up as he was still too young, and one of my final memories of him before he passed - he had a love of humour and found joy in laughter, we often shared memes to one another. The last meme he ever showed me, I saw the “solemn seriousness” in his eyes as he turned the screen to me “Oh what a difference 75 years can make” 1944 - 18 year olds storm the beaches of Normandy, some even voluntarily charging into that meat grinder and almost certain death, to do their part to halt the spread of the nazis 2019 - 18 year olds need a “safe space” because WORDS might hurt their feelings
