After a decline in B.C.'s steelhead and salmon populations in the 1970s, the federal and provincial governments launched hatchery programs around B.C. to save these species from collapse. From January to April of each year, the Freshwater Fisheries Society of B.C. organizes a team of volunteers from the Fraser Valley to catch the wild steelhead trout needed to produce the next generation of hatchery fish. These skilled anglers put in countless hours chasing the "fish of a thousand casts" through the coldest months of the year to ensure tomorrow's anglers can experience the thrill of steelhead fishing on the Chilliwack River.
