The United States Geological Survey has monitored San Francisco Bay for over four decades. Their data shows that the water quality and ecosystem health of the Bay today is better than it was in the 1950s, due largely to improved wastewater treatment practices. The single largest input of freshwater into the South Bay is the San Jose-Santa Clara sewage treatment plant.
