Take the cap off the distributor. Turn the crank by hand back and forth while watch the rotor. See how many degrees of movement on the crank before the rotor start turning.

One thing when I learned to drive a standard transmission my instructor told me not to push on the gas but to just use the clutch pedal so I got used to when it broke and started to engage and to use just the clutch pedal and go through every Gear with just the clutch pedal not pushing on the gas like some people teach and then when I got used to the clutch then I can start pushing on the gas

Rebuild the 350 and put a 5 speed in it for reliability and gas mileage. Remember the days before automatics; somehow the women drove manuals and didn't complain ! She should be glad to have anything to drive !

Greetings from a beautiful and dry day in Torrance! From one Dad to another, as long as the truck is SAFE, don't worry about putting a lot of horse power in it. A lot of power usually gets you into a lot of problems (too much temptation to go fast). A vehicle for a 15 year old doesn't need to be pretty, new, or fast. It just needs to get them home everyday so you can sleep at night. BTW- the caps look great in any color! Take care sir!

Have her try out driving a stick shift truck before swapping it over. Put it in low range and take the hubs out. That way it is a lot more forgiving while she is getting used to operating the clutch and shifting up through the gears. She can get all the way to 4th without gaining too much speed. My old woods truck when I was in high school was an 85 with the 6.2 and a 4 speed. That was a fun truck. There was not a single straight body panel on the thing.

Black on gray for the hats... I also think the old SBC sounds like it has a stretched chain. If it does have a blown head gasket, it doesn't appear to be making it into the crank case. That makes it a great candidate for heads/cam/intake swap. 😃 Unless the bottom end is trash, of course.

Keep a 350 in that truck. Just get a good dependable carb like a new atm carb and put on . On the hats the black patches look better on both colors of hats.

It might have jumped time and when it does sometime it just jumps one tooth and other times alot and dont run anymore.drop a LS in it and your Daughter love it. Those old motors run forever also but for your Daughter a LS will be better for her

Learning to drive manual (what you call "stick" has so many advantages, even when you go automatic. It "should" be compulsory to learn manual, even for those with no intention to ever have one. Letting a non-driver decide is failing them.

Hey I’d definitely love to see a full series on what all a person will need to put and or build a LS for a square body truck!!! I actually have a 1981 GMC K30 that was ordered by a local fire department back in 1980!!! It was ordered as a cab and chassis!!! I definitely have been looking to put a different motor in it but not exactly sure what I would like to put in it!!! Either a LS or a 12 valve Cummins!! It is a manual transmission and I would definitely love to keep the manual transmission also!!! I’ve never done a LS swap but I would definitely like to go that route because I no a little more about gas motors than I do diesel motors!!! It would definitely be nice to No what a person will need to get to be able to swap an LS in a square body to help everyone that would also like to do the same thing!!! Please do a video series with all the parts and what needs to be done to swap a LS in a square body truck!!!!

Looks like almost a complete rebuild on this truck but sense it's your daughter I can understand why you want it to be nice. Family first not a problem with that. Karsi really a standard transmission is not that hard to learn and there is more control when driving a standard when road conditions are bad. Think about it.

350 is simple to work on and find parts for also you can do a automatic swap

LS it? HELL, NO! Fix it to stock! Teach her to drive the 4-speed. She ain't worth a lick if she won't learn the manual shift trans. If the timing chain has jumped, you are risking the valves & pistons occupying the same physical space. Which means your engine becomes junk. Got 2 problems: timing chain and head gasket. Cooling system doesn't get pressurized unless head gasket is bad.

Square body is a perfect truck and keep it 350.

Why does it need the computerized problems of an LS ? It is set up for a dependable small block. Tare down the current engine, see what it has to offer. If it needs a full rebuild, put some performance goodies in it and let her learn to drive a truck.

If you don't stay with the 350 go with a 6 cylinder and not the LS. The low mileage 350 from the RV might not be in the best shape internally due to sitting unused for so long which is what likely caused the problem with the existing engine. To me one of the weak spots on the 350 is the soft rocker arm pivots and tendency for the oil galleries to clog up when they don't see regular use with frequent oil and filter changes so even if swapping the engine from the RV you still should take off the valve covers, timing cover and pan on that engine to verify and clean things out along with change the oil pump and pickup. My brothers thought I was extreme in always replacing the oil pumps when swapping in a used engine until they started seeing how I rarely had them fail while they too often a few weeks to months after putting a used engine in would be facing low oil pressure and pump failures. It use to be a cheap $15 insurance policy but today I see an new Melling High Volume/Standard Pressure Oil Pump is around $70, pickup with screen $25 so around $100 with tax. The Square Body being built like a Brick is not the most fuel efficient design out there so for a new driver to better ensure they don't run out of gas as frequently or are straining the fuel budget I'd put the most fuel efficient engine/transmission combo in there to eek out the most MPG possible. Plus a new driver doesn't really need a vehicle with so much HP that they can have the back end passing the front end too easily from tapping the gas too hard. Back when I started driving you could buy 11 gallons of gasoline on one hour of a kids pay working at a super market $2.75/ $.025 = 11 however today at local prices here you'd need to make $33 an hour in order to match that however average pay working in retail is only around $15ish per hour so you'd only get around 5 gallons of the cheapest low octane gasoline for an hours work. Where I came from in Northern New England we use to say Nothing Rusts Like A Chevy Truck. On some days you might almost swear you could hear them rusting so be sure to do a good job pickling whatever sheet metal you swap onto it to try and keep the rust at bay especially with so many of the replacement body panels now being made of the lowest grade Chinesium. Best!

Was able to make a deal with my 15 year old daughter's cousin who painted cars. She love sky blue and we added pink flakes into the chevy car she had. She is grown now and drives a VW lil Suv. Not a fan of them.

Not saying ya Buddy is right this time, But I had a mate that had a new Nissan xtrail thing, the timing chain did stretch and it was horrible, idled ok, but power was all over, didnt over heat though like this does, but timing chains can be troublesome.

Iv got 11yr daughter her dream truck 4x4 square body chevy so got her a 1985 k10 on 33tire no rust and we are restoring it for her first car im scared to ls swap it but for her to daily it i think it would be better
