In this video, we share the process of building the sawmill cover from the beginning. It goes from raw ground to a sawmill cover, with a walkway, a shed, shelves and lights! Originally, it was just going to be a sawmill - no cover (just the canvas cover given by Woodland Mills), but it soon developed into a bigger project. Yes, it has taken almost 1 1/2 years, BUT, a lot has happened along with the sawmill cover ( logging, a concrete slab for our barn, a well, power and gas and a TON of milling)! What's really cool is you see some of that in the background of this cover/shed being built.
Here's a link to the video where we share the 28 foot beam being milled on a 23 foot sawmill! It was pretty exciting and it's now been over a year since that video came out, so if you haven't see it, it's a good one!
• This LOG Is Too LONG T...
Did you know we are building a barn out of wood that we are milling on our own sawmill?! If you haven't followed along with our BARN Build, make sure to check out that series in our playlists. We finished the slab this summer and are on a pause while we mill all of the lumber needed for the barn build. We have A LOT of milling in our future.

• Why Do We Think WE CAN...
***We are also so excited to have completed our sawmill cover enclosure (sawmill shed). Definitely check out our Sawmill Playlist to watch it all happen. We have shared the process of building our sawmill cover from the very beginning. We have a Woodland Mills HM130 Max sawmill and we live in North Idaho. The sawmill cover / sawmill shed is vital to continue milling for our barn build in the winter months, but it will also be a great way to keep out of the sun during the summer months, and of course all of the rain, in between!
Here are the specs on the sawmill cover / sawmill shed we built:
3 posts in the front
4 posts in the back
Overall dimensions are 15 feet wide by 36 feet long
Longest beam is 28 feet
Front part of the lean to roof is 11'9" and back is 8'
It will have a 3 :12 pitch
Posts and beams are going to be 7 1/2" x 7 1/2"

This was definitely a walk down memory lane! Our Woodland Mills HM130 Max has evolved from just a sawmill, to a cover, to a walkway, to a shed, to lights! It just kept evolving and we love it! We hope you enjoy watching this from the beginning! What was your favorite part of the build? 😁

I loved this video, especially that slab for your bench. Well thought out. Wish I had a cat to lift timbers like you. That's where I'm struggling, trying to figure out how to lift big timbers up high and get them in place.

Thank you! Take a look at Kris Harbour’s Natural Building channel- he built a barn without heavy equipment. Might give you some ideas on how to lift Timbers without using heavy equipment. 😊

Great job guys ! It's dried in that's the main thing :) Big opening yes.. You will just have to keep the snow off, If your only going to be cutting shorter stuff just stand a 6+6 for support to make the opening smaller, Take it out if your cutting 24' long :) I have a 16 foot opening & my beam is two 6+6's one on top of the other then 5/8 plywood both sides :)) it won't break.

Really nice build. I’ve seen a video by planks Mills, he milled a log that was longer than his mill.

@@ourdreaminthewoods I’m getting ready to do an outdoor kitchen build. My Frontier can only milk 10 and half foot lumber. Should have bought the extension. Trying to come up with a way to mill longer beams.

Nice. It was a lot of work but worth it. If you had it to do over, would you have the roof extend out further over where you load the logs from? Another 2' would give you more room to stack the lumber that you have cut and still have it covered. Could you still load logs with the skid steer if that were the case? Thanks for the video. Great to see it all at once.

Thanks, Mike, that’s a good question. A lot of this sawmill shed has been an afterthought. I think I would leave the overhang the way it is and add another 12 feet to the end of the cover - opposite of the shed. We need to drop the elevation between the barn and sawmill shed to make sure it drains properly. Hard to tell what it will do to the approach to the mill. Those heavy beams are just harder to deal with- much easier when you can pack lumber by hand. Thanks so much for watching! 😄

What a great video! I really enjoyed all the step by step info, you have given me alot of great ideas for upgrading things around my sawmill. Let me know if you need any help cutting longer beams we can cut up to forty-five foot long beams. The bigest beam we cut for our house is 18" wide x 28" tall x 44' long. feel free to reach out anytime I would love to show you what we did at our place north of Sandpoint.
