In this video I share with you how I got a jazz sound, which was definitely a big quest for me since I started off with a classical background. I hope someone can relate or finds that it is possible for them too! & Of course, the journey is not over - it never will be!

Love that you talked about drones in this video. Shedding long tones with a drone is the BEST WAY to improve your intonation. In addition to tuning the diatonic tones in the tonic key of the drone, I also practice tuning every pitch on the horn relative to the drone, so I essentially learned aurally how to tune all twelve tones in all twelve tonal centers. This helped me immensely, and because I strengthened my ears so much through this process, when I switched over to a vintage horn that many claim to have intonation issues, I had little to no issue with pitch because I just knew exactly what each note was supposed to sound like.

You are multiple gifted. You PLAY both styles professionally. AND you are a top rate TEACHER. Either of these attributes is rare in one person. You are blessed with both and have the work ethic and habits to go as far as possible in either or both fields. A doctorate might be the indelible mark on your resume that ensures making the most of all your beautiful strengths.

The best exercise for my intonation was playing sop in my uni's concert band on a selmer series II, which is essentially an expensive kazoo (Also a great exercise is: play a note on piano - sing the note an octave higher - play the note (at the higher octave) - check against piano note. Repeat with different intervals)

Hi saxologic, my name is Wyatt Landry, I’m a middle school alto saxophone player and I live in Louisiana. I just wanted to thank you for everything you do. You’ve inspired me to keep on practicing my saxophone ever since I got it. I started playing last September and I have gone to get many solos, duos, and trios in my band. Thanks you for everything you do and congrats for 200k subscribers. I will never forget how much you’ve inspired me and I even hope to meet you if I have a saxophone career.

Another great exercise is to successfully play the chromatic scale down to low C starting on middle D. You leave the octave key engaged which means you really need to redirect your air. This works really well to create a sub tone.

Don't get discouraged if you don't hear quick results! No matter how much practice you put in, getting used to a change in tone or embouchure takes time. Consistent effort WILL pay off, and it's absolutely worth it.

Thanks for those great exercices 👍 I feel like it is what I missed really since I switched from classical to jazz music with a wider mouthpiece. I moved from a lovely controlled sound to a ok klezmer - sometimes not really in-tune one And even if it sounds well, it is frustrating. (Same story with the flute... 😅)

Mouthpiece remington is the move! It's actually something brass players are trained to do just because of how the mechanics of the instrument are. Never thought to try that on a sax mouthpiece!
