Stohrer Music Saxophone Repair

12 жыл бұрын

Saxophone repairman Matt Stohrer of www.StohrerMusic.com shows how sometimes things that seem simple in saxophone repair can actually take quite a bit of knowledge, time, skill, and investment in tools to make absolutely right.
In this Saxophone Repair Topic, he speaks at length about the importance of good key fit in a particular area of the saxophone: the G#/bis adjustment, otherwise known as the automatic G# and 1+1 Bb fingering. Perfect key fit is essential to having a saxophone play at its best, and this particular adjustment illustrates some of the concepts and reasons why that is so.
Note: there is some rather weird artifacting from youtube's shakiness reduction, but its better than the original shaky video.

This video is one I've watched over and over again. There is a wealth of knowledge and very clear information that all players should be able to discuss with their techs and now we can. Thanks Matt!

Thank you for all your open project videos as they are the most informative I could find on KZfaq. Is this issue also contributed to the sudden high G jumped to high D register? I find random tone jump after repadding my B&S tenor sax and has no clue how to fix it.

Amazingly detailed - and this doesn't even show you doing all those things... respect to those who have mastered this! .. Thanks for sharing! QUESTION: how can one achieve a higher pitch through adjustment etc IF G# TENDENCY IS LOW !? Is there an advantage to higher vs. lower action when attempting to raise to just the G# pitch? (Super Balanced alto in this case) (377XX)
@ernietollar407
@ernietollar407 8 жыл бұрын
wow. very precise and thorough thanks. Meanwhile... I'm hoping to raise the pitch on my old super balanced alto G#... I want to try getting the pad cut (well enough inside the tone hole imprint to maintain the seal) . Hoping it'll raise it significantly.

g# comes out of the tonehole under the f#. not sure if cutting the pad will do much except mess up notes below it.

Hi Matt. Thanks for your videos. I've been enjoying them for years. I have a quick question for you. The G# (+octave key) on my MkIV alto stops to respond cleanly once the note preceding it drops down below middle D. Or put differently, when any of the right hand keys are engaged there is no problem. Once the right hand is off, the G# wants to drop down to the lower octave. (I don't know whether that explanation makes any sense to you). Any ideas? Cheers.

Good evening Professor: Stohrer Music Please, I am an artist. My name is Jamel and I am a saxophone player from the Tunisian Republic. I have a problem that exists exactly in place of the left finger of the C # key. If you could send me a short video to try to fix it. As I would like to live next to you. thank you so much .

Another great video. Any advice on swedging the F# key where it meets the post when the G#/bis adjuster arm is attached where you would normally swedge the key? I've got a tenor which is pretty wiggly in that spot.

Hi = I have a Conn 16M tenor sax which plays fine apart from one issue where you go from E or F to the upper G. As soon as you do this the horn overblows which can be rectified to the correct tone of G with the tab of another key. If you play the G without moving from another note it seems to play fine. I am confused as to the cause but it is stopping me from progressing with the instrument. Any ideas as to the issue.

Hi,Matt. I am a experienced sax player but not a technician. Would you suggest me to un-screw and add some key oil into the screw due to the screw fit perfectly? My sax is Selmer Super action II. Thank you!

Great, I have no 1and 1 on my YTS-21. It's just two pieces of cork instead of screws with cork on them! Can a 1 and 1 rod be puchased two replace my silly design? It does have the screw for removal of the whole rod (thank God.)

I have had a couple saxophones with corks, common on older saxophones. I just cut a piece of cork a bit too thick and glue it on, when dry put a piece of sand paper on the g sharp key gently hold the f key down and pull the sand paper out and do this till the exact thickness is achieved. it you sand too much off allowing the g sharp key to open just start over to get it right.

Check pad coverage with a leak light(high powered led flashlight or a fluorescent leaklight, adjust the regulation screws till you get perfect coverage. If the keys don't cover individually, take it back to your tech and tell them the pads need to be reseated.

Different Matt here but I think the easiest thing is to use a leak light see if the horn has any leaks. Then probably make sure your key heights are right, because if they are too low it can get really stuffy.

While you have dealt with the mechanical aspects of bar key regulation, you have nothing to say about the material used for the adjustment screws of packing pieces. The original instruments used cork as this was the only material available at the time. It is indeed incredible that this most unsatisfactory material continues to be used to date. So what should be the ideal material for the adjusters on the bar keys and also on other keys. Is there any convenient method of converting the present system to the excellent Boehm system which totally does away with those ridiculous pieces of cork or other material. Thanking you in anticipation of an informative reply.

I have an awful lot to say about it, actually! See here for 3500 words on it: www.stohrermusic.com/2012/02/saxophone-adjustment-materials-the-stohrer-method/ And see here for a video on how natural cork can actually be a fantastic material *if it is used correctly*: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/i8ijkrFomsCcg30.html There are many attempts at "doing away with" regular saxophone adjustments, including the Conn 30M/26M/28M, Yamaha adjusting screws, Leblanc's various attempts. They all have their drawbacks. Basically, if you have the skill to make a saxophone mechanically tight and then use appropriate adjustment materials well, you can make a saxophone play well and stay in adjustment for a long, long period of time. A lot of repair materials these days for pads and adjustments are sold as the holy grail of whatever, but in fact the old stuff works just fine if you are good at it, and the new stuff doesn't work any better if you aren't.
