Off the top of my head: Oliver Nelson's tenor solo on "Stolen Moments". Especially nice following Eric Dolphy's flute solo. Many times I have the impression that Oliver Nelson's solos are just "exercise patterns". On this solo the patterns are still there, but played with real soul.

You are SO right about being too busy trying to keep up with chord changes. Your approach gives me some mental space to think about what I’m doing WITHIN the chord. Excellent teaching point, Dr. Wally! Thank you.

it's so refreshing that you talk about creating melodies versus playing the changes. I hear so many great artists that keep on saying that we must play only the changes. I totally agree with you, knowing the current/previous chord is mandatory to play a good solo but the goal is still to play a melody not outline the chord changes. Otherwise we will keep on hamering b7 -> 3 on every chord. And also, most iconic solos are not only playing the changes.

Like the song I can't get started, I don't get the idea of transposing. You said key of G is concert alto B flat. We're playing in G and start to play a mixolydian scale in G. I'd think if non transposing instruments are in G that's the concert pitch and saxes would bend to their will. So alto would be in B flat and that's why you called it concert alto B flat. Soooo why aren't we in B flat mixolydian or something?!? I've been trying to transpose songs by moving the notes down a step and a half but a G becomes an E not B flat. Am I going the wrong way? In a similar rant what's wrong with a C melody sax and why didn't they make all instruments play in the same key? I'm sure there's a good reason like range or keeping music teachers employed. Thanks for the videos. I need professional help.

If you want to learn the blues first is to learn how to swing. Knowing chord changes is only half of it. Learn how to swing. Listen to count Basie big band. Go listen to the greats and transcribe. Time feel is as important. Most teachers skip this. Last always use a Metrodome. Having great time is more important than anything else.
