It was the Toyota Prius that killed the cop car, when car manufacturers made cars like Crown Victoria as fleet vehicles it was the Taxi Industry that made them profitable, because the Taxi Industry was purchasing the bulk of them, particularly in the cities where you had far more taxis than police cars. When the Taxi Industry switched to the Prius that made fleet vehicles like the Crown Vic unprofitable, police didn’t have enough purchasing power so they were discontinued

@@Cincy32 I know! I own one. 😁 Mine's a 2002 and it still looks new. To be fair though, the G Wagon was finally redesigned in 2019 and the current model only shares two parts with the old model if I remember correctly.

The buying public stopped buying full-size sedans, and instead bought smaller sedans, or SUV's. The police market (in the greater scheme of things) just isn't large enough to justify continuing the Panther platform, just to equip cops with the CVPI.

They were forced to due to its lack of electronic stability control, which became federally mandated for all new vehicles in the US and Canada for the 2012 model year.

When Vegas was transitioning from the crown vic to the SUV I saw a rare police chase on surface streets. The suspect went into the dirt median to make a U turn and the first couple of SUVs followed with no problem. The poor guy in the crown vic got stuck in the dirt. The units behind him stopped and watched him go back and forth for a minute before they went around him. It was hilarious and showed the upgrade was necessary.

@@piercehawke8021 uhh no, the charger has been built continuously since 2005 at the least. They only quit building it in 2023 and police departments stocked up and have several hundred in depots ready to send out out when needed to replace destroyed units. The police my way have been subbing in durangos to replace chargers cause you can still get the 5.7 in the Durango. The 2024 charger is now featuring EV power or a 3.0 twin turbo I6 that tops out at 550 horsepower

That's because LAPD is smart, they decided to stock up on Crown Victorias until end of production in 2011 and the majority of them just sat in a lot being minimally driven. Now they can throw out new ones that look like they just came out of the shop onto the street to serve another two decades which is smart. Ford, Chevrolet and Dodge don't have that much of a brain for discontinuing every Sedan they have. Corporate decisions though,

this is a common myth that regular cars ("compacts" as you call them even though the charger, crown vic, caprice etc are full-size sedans) are more dangerous in a crash. pretty much any car made in the 21st century has robust crumple zones that are more than capable of tanking the hit from a large vehicle - SUVs on the other hand are incredibly dangerous because their higher center of gravity makes them more susceptible to rolling over

One of my favorite things about suvs is when I'm behind one in a line of traffic and because of the height my line of vision is limited to the back of the suv. I also love when a tall suv is behind me at night and the led head lamps blind me. The sedan is alive and well Honda,Toyota,Nissan Hyundai Volkswagen etc. are everywhere just American sedans. The Asian car market "let" us have the suv pickup truck market while they cashed in on the sedan side.

Current day America must be a pretty terrible place to live. If you want to go anywhere, your only option is to drive. Not only that, but now you're forced to drive ridiculously large SUV's and pickup trucks out of fear of being crashed into by one of the other ridiculously large SUV's or pickup trucks that you're constantly surrounded by on your roads. Even if your area does have a decent network of sidewalks, there's the constant threat of being eviscerated by one of these monstrosities. No wonder such a large percentage of your population are on antidepressants. People need them just to be able to function in such a hellish society.

I still see this as a recipe for disaster. Sure, the SUVs are more practical but they are garbage when it comes to evasive maneuvers or any type of handling. Plus, more mass to lug around means being down on the power. Sedans are nice and lightweight with absolutely no risk of roll over. The Crown Vic and Charger have very respectable trunks for being sedans so there's no excuse to only push for SUVs. Judging by that cops' comment, this was filmed in 2023 because he mentioned that this will be the last year of the fully ICE Charger which was, in fact, discontinued in December 2023. BIG MISTAKE on Dodge for doing that! They were the last domestic manufacturer still supplying police agencies with a high displacement 4-door sedan. And the Crown Vic was put out to pasture way before the SUV craze went into affect back in 2011. The difference between then and now is that the Crown Vic was replaced by other sedans such as the Dodge Charger and Ford Taurus. Now, there's nothing left. So sad 😢

Wasn't unusual to see the old-Crown Vicky as Metro-taxis, even after the cops put a couple-hundred-plus grand on 'em, as they were generally well-maintained. And equally see those same taxis with the rear-suspension "strap" functional, and still-sporting the Police-Interceptor designation tab on the right-rear trunk corner!

The ford crown Vic is a legend in the police forces as they used it for a while and they can take the abuse and can perform pit maneuvers which before didnt make the car roll over cause the criminals car is low to the ground which the center of gravity is there

It's not a video game it's real life when they say they can't outrun radio and also factor in the dash cam, make and model, pretty much what it looks like and where it came from as well as the license it's not gonna get far even if it does they'll track it down so it wouldn't make difference if it's fast or not, not to mention going fast especially when there is traffic is a bad idea! As a frequent customer for the BPD, I gotta say that the suv is definitely more comfortable. The rear leg room is geat, and blood wipes off much more easily than before. But it is harder to stash your stash in between the seats.

It's pretty normal for European countries to transport people by van, thus negating the need for a vehicle big enough for two adults to sit behind each other with a giant steel cage between them. And honestly it's a function of necessity, these SUVs couldn't effectively patrol the typical Ireland or London suburbs without bashing through every unfortunate bloke in their path. Motorcycles have even less space, they have lights, sirens, and radios that fit in the saddlebag with a mic for the driver. Another thing to consider is Americans drive like fucking shit and are on the phone 90% of the time, so a big safe car with lots of bright lights is basically a necessity for someone's who's job is to be in the streets every day.

Even if large sedans were still being made, with all the things police officers need to carry with them in their vehicles, having that back portion of an SUV available for transporting the equipment just makes sense, and will make it easier to access than if it were in a trunk.

Here in Chicago, its ALL Ford Explorers. Maybe like 2 or 3 chargers, but its 99% Explorers. I do miss the Crown Vic like everyone else. Coolest and best looking police car ever.

However in many regional areas where there’s a lot of off road trails the police have always mostly been using large pickup trucks and SUVs that have a very high ground clearance and are equipped with off road tires so they are primarily designed for off road performance.

Theyre still making Chargers, they just changed assembly plants and the 4 door ones won't be available until next year. Maybe the newer version will not produce police force ones? Not sure about that.

All they needed to do was add a Ford eaton supercharger with an intercooler on the P71 and BANG! An extra 100 hp easy. The Kenny Brown P2 has the same 2v 4.6 as the p71 but has a Ford Eaton from the factory and makes about 350 hp and can go from 0-60 in 5.2 seconds which is very respectable for a car that weighs over 4000 lbs. Fast enough to hang with the V8 police chargers.

yeah it's crazy, they're paying more than 100k each now for the SUV's, all to waste more taxpayer money and put even more of it into some companies pocket. I've seen some of them with the best top trim 100k+ 2024 chevy suvs

SUVs are a preference not being forced upon the popo. Many countries use them quite sparingly still. I can’t imagine in built up areas they offer too many advantages.

In my country our police force mainly makes use of trucks. Arrested persons are then thrown into the back where its not a very comfortable ride.

Smryna Tennessee has a Chevy state patrol Malibu in service, an old van to transport prisoners, and 2 crown Vics!!! The new cop cars I see are ford Taurus, ford explorer or Tahoe

Still would like sedans to be reproduced in the in the luxury market again. Not enough variety out there now, every consumer shouldn’t drive the same body vehicles. There should be more sedans, convertibles, coupes, stretches etc. options available from American automakers like it was in the 1980s.

I don't like big vehicles. My car is a 1999 manual Toyota corolla with 322 thousand miles. My truck is a 1996 manual Mazda b2300 with only 160 thousand. Both are base model, small, easy to repair, cheap to repair, and best of all, fuel efficient, and reliable! Plus I don't have a car note. Went to buy a new corolla last year, they told me that they discontinued the manual transmission unless you get the GR Corolla. I said, no thanks, ill keep daily driving my old one.

SUV are a very sucky trend. They are bad for very many reasons. My cities police SUV are often pimped out with (I have heard of) $18000 worth of blue and red lights, it is really ridiculous. Like a carnival ride! Who chooses this crap for the taxpayers to pay for?
