Arguably the ONLY truly comfortable and refined intercity trains left on the UK network now. The 800s are inferior in so many ways. LNER needs to keep these going!
@restojon1
@restojon1 6 ай бұрын
I couldn't agree more, I was looking forward to trying the 800 but when I travelled from London to Bath on one it was utterly awful, both of it's predecessors were far more comfortable and a nicer ride. All they needed to do was give them a spruce up internally every now and then and they would have been golden 👌 Thing is, I'm 6' 2" and 23 stone, I have broad shoulders so I'm always a bit limited on public transport but the 43 and 91 stock accommodated my size well, even my clown sized feet by the tables😅 By the time I'd got down to Bath on that ridiculous 800 I was in agony and on the way back I stood for most of the journey. I remember the introduction of the "225" and as a keen young spotter I would stare into Ilford depot and watch the nearby mainline as these would occasionally blast through breaking the monotony of 86's and 47's dragging the Intercity sets. Happy memories for an old geezer

I like going to see my friend in Chester cos I get to go on one of these little local jobs and there is just something inexplicably satisfying when it rolls up to a stop at the platform in Crewe and you happen to be stood right next to the wonderfully blued huge stainless steel exhaust. I think they must be powered by something really modern and sophisticated - probably German, probably MTM - the idle is perfectly even and quiet - yet hunky - and it moves away from rest without so much as a wisp of clag from those enormous exhausts and a most pleasantly definite and refined throb from presumably something pretty big with 12 or 16 cylinders and a hefty shove which is a world away from the filthy, clattering, interminable haul away from standstill at each of the stops from King's Lynn to Liverpool Street 😂❤

I use LNER quite a lot and since late 2019 I've only had one journey that wasn't an Azuma. It looks as if the InterCity sets don't do the usual Edinburgh KGX mainline route, instead they start and stop at random places like Grantham and terminate at York. I've seen them parked at Peterborough a few times. I remember my first trip on an Azuma and wasn't impressed. The aisle was so narrow, the member of staff running the Standard cafe bar was also on his first Azuma trip and didn't know how to operate the equipment (true story), and the toilets were backing up.

Thankfully, the IC225's won't be going just yet. After LNER retires them, there's a possibility they might be going to a new open-access intercity operator named Grand Union, but that plan's been temporarily suspended indefinitely, and they're going to use Voyagers and Meridians instead for the time being. But the MK4 coaches will be staying for a good while yet, as they could be transferred to TFW or Chiltern in future.

Could not agree more, how much energy is going to be wasted dragging the other "modes" around for no reason. Ironically the 91s did run with a HST power car at the opposite end of the the sets when on trials, when the two were working the total HP for the set was 8 000 + and they were quick off the mark.

@@OnTheRailwayOfficial There's loads of Class 800's running already on LNER, and the seats suck. I don't see why this next batch would be any different.

@@OnTheRailwayOfficial Experience. Each generation of rolling stock is less comfortable than its predecessors. This has been the case since nationalisation.

If i think correctly although I may be wrong and excluding scot rail the only br locomotive familys still in passenger use will be the sprinter and networkers. I do wonder if Scot rail could use the 225s as they are still well within the service life of electric trains

The 225s need to be scrapped. They are becoming more unsafe by the day.

@@OnTheRailwayOfficial Unsafe? Can you give details?
@OnTheRailwayOfficial

@physiocrat7143 Sure. Basically, the body of these trains are suffering from severe corrosion and this has quite an adverse affect on the structural integrity making them more unsafe. Obviously due to numerous factors some of the sets are worse than others, hence why some units have already been scrapped. Personally I don't get why they felt the need to repaint the, if they will just get rid of them soon. Seems a little odd to myself, like a waste of money.

@@OnTheRailwayOfficial Thanks.These were, I believe, dual sourced from BREL and MetCam. That might have something to do with the corrosion. Funny because the Mark 3 Inter City stock was pretty much free from corrosion apart from the toilet areas; a survey was done for Porterbrook around 2010. The 455 mark 3 had terrible corrosion from the inside out due to condensation after 15 years but it was fixed in a repair scheme. I would have thought that by the time the Mark 4 was designed the corrosion problem had been cracked. Seemingly it was not. The last of the mark 1 stock had aluminium anti-corrosiom beading. They should have gone for corrugated stainless steel bodyshells like the Channel Tunnel car carriers and the Swedish X2000 trains which date from the same time and are having a refurb. Budd stainless cars from the 1950s are still giving good service. If they are not suffering from metal fatigue they can continue in service indefinitely. The mark 4 bogie design gives a dreadful ride but so do most recent designs. The last decent bogies are those on the class 158 units. It isn't a problem just in Britain; it is the same here in Sweden and the track gets smashed up as well as passengers' backsides.

@OnTheRailwayOfficial It was to smarten them up. They had not had a repaint since 2010. If they were so bad then they wouldn't be in service.
