If you can arrange and afford it, try to grab a ride with the "Glacier Express" in Switzerland. It's a train with panoramic cars (a few even open-top) that goes over the mountains as a narrow gauge railway, giving even more incredible views. The whole route is a Unesco Heritage site.

Re: the delay for the police. On my last trip to Switzerland, the fire alarm in my coach went off just as the train started rolling out of Basel HBF en route to Visp. Some idiot lit up a cigarette in the washroom, and set off the alarm. At the first stop, the police boarded the train and took him away. All of us in that car got vouchers for 8 francs for the inconvenience, usable on trains and at a few other locations. It all happened so quickly that we were back on schedule by the time we reached Berne.

After I get a few other financial and domestic issues sorted, and provided my health doesn't deteriorate (I'm in my early seniors' years), Switzerland and Northern Italy are on the 'Bucket List'. Thank you for this excellent review of your journey from Geneva to Milan.The scenery is simply stunning and you have shown it well. Coupled with your many other videos of your Summer 2020 European travels, this is an excellent salve for anyone viewing your channel that is currently experiencing lockdown, especially your UK compatriots and others in the Northern Hemisphere winter. There are several gems in this video that are worth further comment, so please bear with me. First, thanks for your warning about the information displays at Geneva being mostly in French. I will need to revise my Year 11 (1968) learnings here, although, as an Aussie, I could probably get away with; "Pardon, je suis Australien et mon Francais n'est tres bien. J'ai besoin d'aide. Parlez vous Anglais?" Most French people with any sense of history would probably go out of their way to assist, given my nation's record in France during World War 1. Second, I love your appreciation of Art Deco in Geneva station and noted in other of your videos. Third, this appears to be one of Alstom's really stylish offerings. Don't get me started about the poor riding quality of their Xtrapolis trains here in Melbourne (although I'm sure Alstom Head Office wasn't aware of the terrible condition of some of our track when these were first designed ; track condition has improved somewhat in the last five or so years, but there are still areas where the ride is, shall we say, breathtaking at speed.). Fourth, I had to really laugh out loud when you revealed the snakes 'n' ladders game on the fold out table. Given a few of my experiences in the last week, it was so poignant. Fifth, there were several sequences within this video that caused me to pause the play and look more deeply. As a retired Chartered Member of the Chartered Institute of Transport and Logistics Australia, I noted with extreme interest the following; 1. The Steel Highway Train for Trucks that you passed entering Domodossola, 2. The Milano tram and the boulevard upon which it was running in terms of the clear separation of road service lanes from the main road traffic lanes and the placement of the tramway upon the verge nature strips - we in Melbourne could do with such a road design revision for our St.Kilda Road, 3. The major bus depot you passed just before arriving at Milan. At the next Victorian Committee meeting of CILTA on Wednesday next (27th), I will draw the attention of the Committee to your video channel and this video in particular for the abovementioned notes. While you are keeping safe and warm at home in the Inverness winter under lockdown, you might have a chuckle at my personal lockdown during a current heatwave Southeastern Australia is experiencing this weekend (just before our National Holiday). I'm indoors with the fan on and hydrating with iced water while others outside at beaches are exclaiming "Turn me over mum, I'm fried this side!" Amongst other delayed things on my to do list, I'll set aside some time to check out your friend 'Nonstop Eurotrip'. You might like to check out some of our local Aussie rail KZfaqrs as well (suggest you start with Pannier P Productions); Cheers from Michael.

Never had a bad journey on Swiss railways as they unlike UK railways concentrate on a passenger rather than profit. Compare this train to the plastic trains GWR etc have
@tonywilkins6090
@tonywilkins6090 3 жыл бұрын
From what I have seen online, it's the DfT's decisions that basically give the feeling that UK railways are about profit than passengers. TOC's don't have any input about what type of trains they get. Basically DfT makes the decision and TOC's basically have to accept it as DfT are basically paying for the trains. Obviously because of the franchise system, TOC's basically can't afford to buy new trains outright as they basically won't make the money back during the franchise period. Whereas Swiss railway companies basically own the trains, so they have full control over what they want, and they would easily make the money back due to lack of franchise periods.

Nice trip! I took this train once from Frankfurt to Basel. From my site of view I think it’s one of the best trains from SBB. Normally the trains are not very comfortable and often quite shabby. The worst think in Swiss trains is that you sit via-a-vis to 90%. Especially during COVID crisis it feels not good. But SBB is always punctual and reliable.

Nice trip, that ETR Train is awesome. The disappointment about this trip only when your train got delayed for a while because police enter on the train for unknown reason when in Lausanne. That Rolling Highway a.k.a Train transporting Truck when entering Italy looks great despite the locomotive is hidden behind the train in between your train and the Train transporting Truck.

Great video! This train looks amazing, the only thing I don't like about SBB trains is that they have most of the seats configured as table seats. SBB Pendolino on this route is one of the top 10 trains in my wish list, I hope I'll try this train soon ..

Thanks! I agree, for a modern train, it's a bit strange to have so many bays of four. Not so great for a solo traveller like myself.

Great video, thanks Dylan. My partner and I love exploring Switzerland by rail (he lived there for two years in the 1990s) and SBB-CFF-FFS takes a lot of beating. Not so keen on their pendolinos as they don't feel as spacious as the other express train stock, but otherwise a great experience.

Thanks. As always, a very good video. As often, a small remark. We in Suisse romande do not know what SBB is. Intercantonal, we have Chemins de Fer Fédéraux (CFF). From Lausanne, Canton Vaud, you have a spectacular view Lac Léman. Only Genèvois call their much less impressive part of the lake Lac de Genève. Another sign of arrogance? The entire basin is called Léman, whether they like it or not. 😇😁

The train is very slick. The mountain views were amazing. Never saw a reading lamp in that position before. Wonder if the light bothers a person sitting across from it. Thanks for getting that shot from outside the station. Beautiful. I was surprised by two things: 1. Lots of people were not wearing masks and 2. The café was open.

I think the video was recorded a while ago, because these days it is obligatory to ware a mask in public transport (Switzerland was one of the later countries to implement it).

Very scenic trip - worth doing just for the scenery. Nice looking trainset, very modern, interior lighting and colours pleasant and as you said looked relaxing. Not sure the legroom would be great if there were 4 people in the seat set. Again thanks for the closeup of the locomotives including the connection which is interesting and different from North American trains. Electric tramway at 15:45, cool ! The station in Geneva was sort of ordinary but I noticed as you went in, a guy coming out with a dog on a leash; looked like he had been inside the station, couldn't do that here. Now that some trains are again opening their café cars it would be interesting to see what they serve. Thanks Dylan, this is a must do for visitors to Europe.

Not just any old tramcar, but one of Milan's 1500 series cars that were built between 1927 and 1930 and are still in standard service. The design is actually a US one, called the Peter Witt car after its designer, and similar cars ran on many US streetcar lines in the middle of the last century. Some of Milan's cars have been sold to San Francisco, so you can ride them in the US again now.

@@Steve-xf4uv Sorry, guess I should have said North American rather than US. I've ridden them in both Milan and San Francisco, and they are an elegant classic design. Sadly there are none here in the UK.

Amazing scenery throughout. Although the Alps were the mainstay, for some reason the flatlands of Italy and its suburbs with the sun beating down on the vegetation caught my attention more.

I took this in reverse back in March 2015 on my return journey from Venice. The mountains were covered in snow, which made the view even more breathtaking, but there was a lot of mist over Lake Geneva. The On-board WiFi didn't even get as far as asking for a mobile phone number (in fact I seem to recall that trying to connect caused my phone to overheat!) Unfortunately, the connecting Geneva to Lille service that I took for the final leg no longer runs.
