In the collective imagination, the frantic space race is embodied by the rivalry between the United States and the USSR. But, in the shadow of this cold war, a duel rages: that between the Russian engineer Sergei Korolev and his German counterpart Wernher von Braun. For nearly forty years, the two scientists used their genius to serve, not the military interests of great geopolitical powers, but their childhood dream: reaching space. This crossed portrait of two heroes of the conquest of space reveals different destinies, yet closely linked: that of Wernher von Braun, in turn pampered by the Nazi regime, then by the White House, and that of Sergei Korolev, an outcast victim of the purges Stalinists, before becoming the hero of the Soviet people.
