A great “how to “ video Julian. I look forward to watching part 2. Thanks for sharing your tips regarding the glue on the bottom of a glass jar. That was brilliant. Roy.

The hands of an experienced sign writer! My son has been in the trade for 14 years now and reckons he spent the first two years of his apprenticeship ’weeding’ ! He now specialises in automotive ‘wrapping’. Was great to watch Julian 👍

That sounds about right, it's the job no one wants to do but a vital process in the sign industry. Vehicle wrapping on the other hand, is a skill not may can do.

Picked up some good tips there julian, like spraying the paper first. Also its clear that take your time and leave things to dry before moving on. You really are a master of kit bashing well done. Can't wait to see the finished thing. Look after yourself Eddy xx

I’ve been thinking about kit bashing this corner shop into a taller building for my city backscene as well so your video is timely. I’m watching with great interest. Thank you.

One thing I do, to hold those window frames in position while the glue sets are wooden spring clothes pegs - I purchased about 20 from ebay.

Hi Julian - Absolutely brilliant video mate. You just never stop learning. I will have a go next time of varnishing the paper before starting the build which is different to how I first started and see how I go. I personally have had no issues so far folding paper over but I still like the idea that varnishing gives it extra protection. I also like your folding technique which I will have a go at. I really like the way you do the windows, looks much easier cutting them in that way. Bearing in mind yours is OO and mine is N. It's possible that they may not work with N Gauge as it is far too small, but we shall see. looking forwards to Part 2. Regards Chris

Thanks Chris. The main reason I spray the prints beforehand is because I use a colour laser printer where the print tends to have a slight shine to it. I also found the print would start rubbing off when folding on corners, so spraying with matte spray first avoids this from happening. It will be different if you're using an inkjet printer as they embed the colour into the paper and don't have a shiny finish (unless you're using photo paper).

Excellent as always. You can get less sticky transfer tape. Cricut transfer tends to be too strong for most things!! Cheapest the better. Cricut tip is to take your transfer tape and stick it to your jumper before use to take away some of the stick. And if your doing several stick it back to its carrier sheet in between.
@StationRoadModelRailway
@StationRoadModelRailway 2 жыл бұрын
In my situation the transfer tape is not strong enough, the vinyl stays on its backing when to try to peel up the transfer tape.

Have not used the smart vinyl as its called here. Get a mat and then can use any vinyl. Didn't the joy come with one? I know you think it's hassle but it's less wasteful too.

Julian, thanks for a no nonsense enabling video, I feel much better placed to have a go at this type of project. Michael at Chandwell has done a tutorial on inkscape, well worth watching, if you didn't already know.

Glad it was helpful! I keenly watch Chandwell, what I can't get over is how he does all this in N scale.

Great job on re-jigging that Scalescenes kit Julian. The Cricut vinyl seems a bit of a faff, I thought it would be much easier than that. I have 3d printers so normally use those to create window frames etc. anyway. Keep up the good work.

One area I haven't explored is 3D printing, I never been able to wrap my head around the 3D modelling/software side for some reason. The vinyl cut method of window creation works well enough for my purposes, it's more the limitations of the budget-end Cricut Joy machine, something I plan to upgrade at some point.
@Jamie096

With the bigger machines. You can print onto card and cut all the brickwork windows and doors out too. Saves alot of cutting. Amazing what the joy can do and replacement cheaper blades have just come onto amazon.

Hi Julian, great video. One question, do you print the Scalescenes overlays on matte photo paper?
@StationRoadModelRailway
@StationRoadModelRailway 2 жыл бұрын
Thanks Jim. I just use standard 80gsm copy paper on a colour laser printer. I haven't tried matte photo paper but wonder is this might be better suited for inkjet printers.

Hi Julian. Great video. One question on glueing the brick prints to the card. Wouldn’t it be easier to put the glue on the card, rather than the print? That way the glue would only go where it’s needed, not on the back where the windows/doors that you’re going to cut out anyway are. Or is there a reason you put it on the print?
@StationRoadModelRailway
@StationRoadModelRailway 2 жыл бұрын
Thanks Ron. I did try applying the glue stick to the card structure but it's almost unavoidable to end up with clumps of glue around the edges and inside the window openings which then has to wiped away. By applying the glue stick to the paper, this avoids excess clumps of glue.

Julian, I meant to ask you what weight and type of paper do you use for the scalescenes parts. I have 110gsm matt photo paer but think that might be too heavy.
@StationRoadModelRailway
@StationRoadModelRailway 2 жыл бұрын
Hi Andrew. A lot depends on the type of printer being used, but my impression is the thinner the paper, the better it will be for folding/creasing around corners. I use standard 80gsm copy paper in a colour laser printer. I have used 160gsm premium laser printer paper on occasion but only on flat structures that don't require folding. I've not tried photo paper and I suspect laser photo paper might differ from inkjet photo paper. I imagine the thicker the paper stock gets, the more likely the print might split/crack when folding.
