3 жыл бұрынComplete DCC install in a ScaleTrains Dash 9 locomotive. In this video I remove the factory motherboard, decoder and speaker. I install a NixTrainz Decoder Buddy, SoundTraxx 21pin 8 function decoder, Scale Sound Systems speaker, and a Current Keeper.

For my Scale Trains Dash 9 installs I like using Soundtraxx TSU PNEM decoder, their 2pin harness and TCS' Keep Alive2 . The TCS' Keep Alive2 and 2pin harness combination lets the KA2 drop in the hole from the previous ESU current keeper and plug into the TSU PNEM board; simple. I "liked" this video because it showed a more efficient decoder install using the "1k Decoder Buddy" to get past wiring resistors and managing excess wiring. I've been waiting for this video to post. Now that it has posted I've gotten great tips from this video on installing the "1k Decoder Buddy" and "Soundtraxx 21PNEM" decoder on my Scale Trains HO Scale Dash 9, NS. Thanks So Much!

What kind of camera and mount do you use for the overhead videos like this? I'd like to see your setup... I really like it! Another great video (I'm looking back through some of your older vids). Shows how important patience is when doing these upgrades/modifications. I want to start playing with upgrading older locos to DCC and LED lighting, so your videos are invaluable. One thing is for sure, I'll want to make sure I'm in a calm cool and collected mindset. Thanks for sharing 🤠

Thanks for watching. I use a canon vixia hf r500 camcorder for the overhead shots, and my cell phone for the reveal shot at the end.

Scaletrains usually has a current keeper built in their board, but I believe it only works with Loksound decoders. But I agree, the speaker swap is almost a must !

If I was to use a pnp board from tsunami 2 would I need resistors for all the light functions? I have a spare GE Decoder and speaker from Soundtraxx and have been looking for an engine to drop them in.

Yes, 1k ohm resistors if you're using led bulbs. No, If you use 1.5 volt bulbs. See page 20 of the Soundtraxx installation guide. soundtraxx.com/content/Reference/Manuals/Tsunami2/Installation-Guide.pdf

Stupid question...why didn't you just buy the sound traxx decoder that plugs into that board. Seen a video that soundtracks did with a sd45-2 high hood ..was a simple plug and play.

I'd like to know as well. Seems this locomotive would have benefited with the TSU-21PNEM 7FDL-16 straight to the OEM circuit board. I can understand perhaps wanting to illustrate a Decoder Buddy install but there are better situations than this. Anytime you increase level difficulty you increase to risk of MURPHY Moments to the 10th power.

The factory ESU set-up appears to utilize some under-the-covers techniques to control the integrated power pack and the AUX8 port without actual separate wires from the decoder to the motherboard. I'm suspecting ESU implemented a SUSI communication mechanism to tell the mother board when to disable to power pack, and what to do with AUX8. So, as soon as you pull of the ESU DCC 21-pin board and put on another supplier's board, away goes power pack control and control of whatever is wired to AUX8.

Enjoyed the video. I'm curious what draws you to digitraxx over the lok 5 to the extent of the added expense of the model? Just wondering, because I'm not that experienced with dcc. Also, if your interested in recovering some of the cost, I have a couple of scalertrains dash 9s I intend to add dcc and sound to and would like a factory decoder.

The decoder is from Soundtraxx. I wanted to show the versatility of the Decoder Buddy from NixTrainz. As for selling the decoder, it is already spoken for.

@@SoloContracting thanks for the reply. I've picked up a whole slew of proto locomotives the last couple of years after getting back into the hobby. I'm liking the looks of the decoder buddy to help convert them.
