When I was 16 I worked for this guy that owned a small shop that sold food and drinks and small items. He took crap from nobody and told us that if we saw a shoplifter to use any means necessary to stop them. We had a baton that he actually made in order to beat shoplifters and told us that he would pay any legal expenses. We had a sign that actually said “shoplifters will be beat”. We had very few problems.

Sadly, in today's economic poverty, lots of shoplifters are genuinely needy, often hungry, cold, dejected, miserable.... They often steal food TO EAT... And that might be the only thing they've eaten in three days... I'm not about watching my money walk out of the door, but I'm not about to assault a vulnerable person in desperate need... There's different types of thieves. Some already have money, but steal for a living. Those lot deserve whatever they get, but some shoplifters aren't bad people, they're just in bad situations and genuinely need some brotherly love. We all need help sometimes...

Yes, happens in my part of the UK too, in Shrewsbury and Chester. Tends to be a lot of Roma Gypsies come here to beg. They get dropped off at their designated spot, do the begging, (pretending to be disabled, homeless, have starving children etc)and then get picked up by the "boss of the gang" at the end of the day, sometimes in Mercedes etc. They make rich pickings, unfortunately, and are also probably on tax-payer funded benefits., so often they're raking in more money than the scammed people who give to them. Recently, I watched a video of a very obese Roma woman who was sitting on the pavement begging.. Beside her was a handwritten cardboard sign stating: "I am starving. Please Help!". I realise the fake beggars are fraudsters who cheat the people who give to them and they're also a blight on our towns and cities and can get threatening if challenged...but I did laugh at the "Starving" sign, given the huge size of the woman. Not sure if she managed to get many donations that day!

One difference between UK shoplifters and those in the US is that when the latter are caught they will be screaming their lungs out, kicking and arguing like there's no tomorrow. In the UK, not a peep....just calmly taking out all the items like nothing had happened..."Ok mate you can have them all back". Lol.

Depends where they get caught. She got caught at the till so there's no point her protesting but I've definitely seen shoplifters here in the UK fighting it and making up noise, running etc.
