As a teenager, I had a ponytail. I worked as a cashier. Old guy, paying for his stuff, gave me grief about it as I counted back his change. I pointed out to him that there was a guy on the back of his nickel also sporting a ponytail. He walked away grumbling, but speechless.

I'd be thrilled if we would stop policing other people's hair. While we are at it, let's stop policing their clothing choices as well. Hair and clothing has no gender.

I am a male in my late-teens, and I have shoulder length wavy hair. I often put it in a pony tail to keep it out of my face, and people are upset over that, or just the fact that I have long hair. It seems the only acceptable hairstyle society accepts for men is the 'crew cut' or 'Ivy League'. I like all unique male hairstyles, including the "manbun", but I can't say that without at least 54 people calling me a hipster.

Seero Boarder Eh, a lot of that is probably your age. My hair is past my waist, and negative comments stopped after high school. Crow, a few months ago I was on a military base interacting with a wide range of civilians, soldiers, and officers, with a bun&chopsticks.. no one seemed to bat an eye. People really stop caring after one gets away from that age group.

God men are weird at times: man bun, manscaping, mankini, man purse, *insert whatever body care product* FOR MEN, etc. Come on guys, are we really that concerned that someone is going to think you're a woman if ya don't add man to whatever "traditionally feminine" thing you're doing or wearing? Except manicure. You can keep that one. That one is alright (don't tell them, ladies. shush).
@neeneko

IncogPollywog To be fair, we see the same kind of pattern when women are 'doing man things'. For instance I still see many professionals referred to as 'a woman XYZ" as opposed to 'an XYZ'. So it is really just the 'normal things need no word, abnormal needs qualifiers' pattern.

IncogPollywog Protein power FOR HER etc.. It's a marketing gimmick my friend, no man tries to make it "ours"... Nor do women take protein and say THIS IS OURS! It is exactly the same product in different packaging, made by the media and by advertising companies etc, to try and sell more products.

woody500z I mean yeah? Yes that is correct. Thing is marketing is a two way street. Companies appeal to the wants of their customers. You don't suddenly get a gimmick out of thin air. It's more "Oh men like to feel masculine. Women like to feel feminine. I've got an idea!" *poof* Meggings for men and leggings for ladies. It's okay to a degree but the level it's currently at is pretty silly.

It's just like when people say "Girl Gamer" and the like. It just shows that people associate "Gamers" with men and masculinity so a girl "gaming" is like some kind of exception that needs a title to further reinforce gender roles and stereotypes. I hate the term "girl gamer." You wouldn't call a guy "boy gamer" so please people can we just agree to stop with the whole adding sexist prefixes to every damn word in the dictionary? To me a "man bun" just proves one more time that femininity and masculinity are not hair related (so the same would go with clothes). I find men with buns (specially Jared Leto, of course) very attractive and masculine. I myself got my hair cut really short over a year ago. It was weird at first and it took time to realize it, but at some point I found out that I don't feel any less feminine than I felt before. It is all about perception and attitude isn't it? I don't know.. gender is such a social concept that it's hard to see when is it personal and when is it social. And for me, it sometimes makes me feel torn that I feel very feminine and I like it and at the same time I know that most of these "feminine" things is what so many people want to deconstruct, including myself sometimes.
@marls4life
@marls4life 9 жыл бұрын
diemcim totes right, gender is a constructed concept and it all starts at birth. Boys typically wear more "masculine" colors like blue, brown, or green while girls stick to "pinks and purples." If you notice, baby girls wear headbands even though they don't have any hair. Also people talk to girls in a more gentle tone than boys. I work at a daycare center and it's so noticeable how a lot of the girls say "I want to be a princess" while the boys say "they want to be a police man or firefighter." Occasionally you'll see a few little boys running around with a tutu and play heels or a girl rough-and-tumbling like one of the boys but they don't care. It's only until they get older that they start to believe what they've been conditioned to believe. Unfortunately you can't really stop it, you can only encourage that a child follow their heart and not believe that they're only supposed to do one thing because they're a girl or a boy

My boyfriend wears a bun everyday. I was unaware that it was controversial. He grew out his hair last year because he wanted to. His hair is very curly, like ringlets, and he doesn't like his curls, but he does like the long hair, so he pulls it back. When the pony-tail started curling, he started wearing a bun. I don't see how a bun constitutes 'grooming'. No product is required and it's only a couple twists of a rubber band beyond just combing the hair.

I have been rocking the "man bun" for many, many years now and it has nothing to do with fashion. I like it because my hair length tends to be at least past my shoulder blades and the regular ponytail just doesn't keep it up and out of the away the way I want it sometimes. The "man bun", for me at least, is a tool to deal with long hair when I need it out of the way. I don't understand why people are so sensitive to this. Like you said, it's not like it's new and it's not like they have to wear it or even look at it. It seems fashionistas have far too much time on their hands and far too much ego in their brains.

Ok so 3 years ago I moved from California to Germany and I must say, men are not told that taking care of their hair is girly. I know plenty of guys with super short hair that blow dry and style their hair. One of my sisters friends uses hairspray everyday. I find it a shame that in the States men feel so obliged to be as 'manly man' as they can get. Let them do what they want!

My boyfriend has had very long hair for a pretty long time now lol He used to always keep it in a ponytail, but he recently had to get a haircut for work. (It was longer than mine before the cut) He basically just took advice from the hair dresser to get a small undercut and just trimmed the rest. He keeps it in a bun all the time now because it's the cleanest way to have long hair at work. I don't think it should be such a controversial thing .. That's just absolutely ridiculous in my opinion lmao And it's not necessary to call it a "man bun", it's just a bun :P

You sum it up when you say greasy. Most of the men I see wearing a 'man bun' look REALLY un-groomed. Shaggy stubbly beard, wrinkled clothing, unwashed hair...they just look bad. A samurai is clean, well dressed, and formal looking to nearly being faultlessly dressed and groomed. Siqk men again are very well dressed, and present themselves very professionally. So if you clean yourself up I say more bun to ya. The fact is from the 1960s forward there have been men wearing buns. The clean ones look cool and nobody cares, but the people who look like BUMS look like crap. Grooming it is REALLY important, and that is what 90% of these man bun wearers need to learn.

Leon Stuij Or I could keep my hair long because I like it...? I've had short hair (chin length, a bit shorter in the back at its shortest), and when I put THAT in a ponytail, I need at least 20 bobby pins to get it out of my face. Longer hair is also lower maintenance and WAY easier to take care of- I just need to braid it when it's windy.

I'm on the side where I think people are so anti-man buns are actually anti-femininity in dudes. Most of the "cool" hair dos for dudes for most of my life have been somewhere in the realm of "oh, yeah, just got out of bed" to "oh, yeah, I just got out of bed ;) " Mussy, maybe a little less clean than is ideal, just "meh." Most of the kewl kidz I grew up with seemed to put a lot of effort into looking like they weren't putting any effort in. More recently, there's been a branching off to include the man bun and, for lack of a better word, grandpa hair. Neatly parted, slicked back just right. I think the word they're aiming for is "dapper." But the dapper grandpa look (cardigans optional) is still really masculine. It's familiar. It's a throwback. Long hair on dudes, especially when pulled into buns (which, frankly, is usually an A+ in my book. Have you seen Hozier? Good Lord. I mean, ahem) isn't in line with our ridiculous expectations of what masculinity is. Stars forbid you also care about your clothes, too. (Side note: I think that the current trend of stubble face is also tied into the "men don't care about their appearances because they're too busy bench pressing lions or fixin' trucks" attitude. All of the examples of lads with buns that I can think of also have scruff/stubble/beard going on *coughHoziercough* and it kind of reassures people that yes, this gentleman has long hair and it's in a bun, but he is still A Man!)

I have a friend who has very long hair, typically kept back in the acceptable "man ponytail", keep in mind this is a man in his fifties, old hippie type, long greying beard, and a very tall and large guy. One night I was out with my girly friends and my friend was allowing us to put his hair in french braided piggy tails. Just as we're finishing up, we're called inside, as one of the girls was having trouble with a man being inappropriate with her. Never have I seen a guy more hilariously terrified than this guy with a large, imposing be-piggytailed gentleman storming toward you to tell you how to treat women respectfully. Moral of this story: picture my friend in pigtails, no wait, I mean don't judge a man by his hair! 😂

My partner's hair is longer than mine. His hair goes down to his jeans' waistband. He always has his hair in a low pony tail or a tucked in a low flipped under bun. He had serious trouble finding a job because of his long hair. However, he was able to find a third shift security job at a company that has an anti-discrimination policy. He still gets some questions about his hair since he works in a factory. But, when people (men mostly) ask about the safety of his long hair (and beard), he simple asks whether women are required to cut their hair for safety around the factory and machines. Usually, that stops the questions.

As a woman with long hair and a lazy sense of style in regard to it. (Short bangs and hair all one length.) I can tell you, a ponytail/bun is super freakin' easy. A good majority of the pictures shown of "man buns" are how I put my hair up on the regular and only takes about 3 seconds to do. No one is calling these men feminine for just having long hair, so why call them that when they want/need to keep said hair out of their face? Why can't a bun be gender neutral? To me it sounds like these people want something to complain about.

Ironic thing was a few years after I trimmed my locks that length of hair went mainstream but I had moved on...

I'm wondering why there are controversies over things people do with their own bodies in the first place, as long as it's not harmful to themselves or others. It's never made sense to me. Using this example, how could a man having his hair in a bun be harming anything? It's not! I'm guess what i'm really asking is what motivates people to say negative things over stuff like this where there is no actual problem here? I understand people have their own subjective tastes but, why try to belittle others for doing something completely harmless like having a bun hairstyle?

I've never understood the hate and I actually find it hella attractive (obviously as long as the guy suits it). I've heard a lot of people complain about it but I'm into it. I wish we could just get over this damn feminine/masculine thing though -.- I mainly dress quite 'feminine' with makeup and long curled hair but when I decided to wear a men's t-shirt (white with a tye-dye panda on it, fuck yeah!), black skinnies, bright blue vans and a rucksack to uni the other day with barely any makeup because I was in a rush - my friends couldn't get over it. They kept teasing me for looking like one of the guys in our group and I wasn't offended or anything because I was perfectly comfortable in what I was wearing but it definitely made me feel for guys who want to dress a little more 'feminine' because I know that outside the group of people who knew me; people didn't look twice e.g. My brother. He's 16 and naturally acts and looks a little more 'feminine' than most guys and he was bullied for it at school for years until he 'manned-up' and hit someone. It was pretty damn upsetting to see him have to change his perceived personality to make people back off but the funniest part of it all? I know for a fact the girls in his year at school are really attracted to him. It's hella weird for me to say that as his sister but I've seen it and heard it so for all the hate he got from other guys about not being 'masculine' he's attractive to a lot of girls his age.

It's because buns are associated with women and women < people. Men = people. So when men women, men end up < people and we can't have that. Being < people is reserved for women.

I think anyone at all-- regardless of gender or lack of gender identity-- should be free to wear their hair however they like. Men get screwed on fashion a lot-- look at the breadth women have in their clothing options and then look at how men's options are variations of a much smaller list of items. I'm not a fan of that already, so I'm especially not a fan of limiting men in their hair choice now, too.

I rock a top knot most days just because it's easier than an hour of styling my hair. I also like it on guys. I'm not too sure whether it actually denotes femininity or simply wanting to get the tresses out of the way. At a conservative or formal event, maybe it's best not to look like a hippie/hipster. (?)

If you have long hair at some point you're gonna need to put it in a bunch. Whether you're a man or a woman. I like men with long hair. It gives me something to play with besides my own hair. 😊

You know a lot of this attitude against long haired men really irks me. I am a grown man with long hair. People get super judgemental when I do things like braid it. I don't get it. I like doing things with my hair so that makes me less manly some how? Sorry for having an interest in something. Next time I will ask what I am allowed to have an interest in. Hell I would get it dyed as well if the braiding wasn't already too much for most people. Seriously though, I don't get this attitude that it is wrong for men to spend time on their hair/appearance. Why does that make men unattractive?

well guys also gel and spike their hair which requires time so I don't understand why people don't complain that they are spending too much time on their hair like women... I remember one day I jokingly patted my friend's hair and he was a bit bothered because he had gelled it up. Personally, I like man buns because it looks elegant. Now I know this is going to sound vain but trust me I'm not, the first thing I notice about a guy is their hair. Of course that's not the only thing, I settle on. If someone's a jerk, I won't go for them no matter how nice they look). But looking nice is generally the first thing people notice about each other- even though we like to insist we never take appearance into account. Looks might not be the deciding factor but it doesn't mean considering someone's appearance isn't a thing. The way someone looks shows that the person is able to take care of himself. Returning to why I find man buns attractive. I like the pulled back look compared to long hair out of a bun because it kind of gives it the same effect as short hair (just with the added knob on the end. While I never thought of it before, I would also agree that it subtly gives the hint that a guy is in touch with their feminine side which I find incredibly sexy. I like to know a guy is able to be vulnerable with his emotions. General tip though: don't do a man bun if you can't pull it off

Wait. This just blew my mind. I don't read magazines you see, so I don't know what they say. It actually blows my mind that some people can write about hair and not feel ashamed of themselves. I guess it's alright if you are a hair stylist, but then you would be writing from a hygenical point of view, not a judgemental one. I actually didn't believe that this kind of magazine nonsense existed outside of comedies that made fun of stupid magazines. Holy fucking shit. This is second only to me finding out that narwhal is a real animal.

I find it interesting that if you spend time on styling your hair as feminine, when in todays fashion the "off-duty model" often has that I just woke up like this style such as the classic French female un-styled hair, no makeup, and relaxed Parisan fashion (ex: Caroline de Maigret). I personally think it is attractive in general when someone cares about their appearance, not in vanity, but in an outward expression of themselves.

I think that the man bun can help men have more 'softer' roles in society. I hope that this can help more man become stay at home dad, or nurses, or teachers when right now they are being told that that is off limits to them
