SCANDINAVIA 1: The Nordic Peoples and the Vendel Period
In what is now Norway, Sweden and Denmark inhabited the Nordic peoples. His first important culture was that of Jastorf, in the middle of the Iron Age, in which his own writing system called Futhark, based on runes, was taking shape. Towards year 400 a series of migrations of these people began towards the south, where they hit against the Roman limes. Here the barbarian invasions began.
Goths, Burgundians, Vandals, Jutes, Angles, Saxons ... all migrated, some to Hispania, others to Gaul and others to what would become England. Those who stayed became part of the Age of Vendel. Small kingdoms stand out like the one of the Geats, in Gotaland, Sweden; the Kingdom of Vestfold in Norway, or the Kingdom of the Danish or of Zealand in Denmark.
Bigger kingdoms were created, with a konungr at the head. They were elected by the Thing assembly, and they had governors, the Jarls. Every so often they gathered for a great ritual that took place in the Temple of Gamla Uppsala, with human sacrifices it seems. With the passage of time, they would improve their ships and engage in pillage and piracy. Thus the Norsemen became Vikings.
