The 5 volt reference circuit is like the cardiovascular system in your body, no 5v ref is equivalent of having no blood psi (YOU'RE DEAD!). But today's cars can have as many as 4 different 5v regulators, while older systems only had one. With a shorted 5v ref on a single regulator system, the engine computer will be completely dead. You will have no communication with it and it will not have spark, fuel or injection pulse. To learn more about this 5v reference circuit and what it does and how to test it, join my online classes on my website (ScannerDanner Premium). www.scannerdanner.com/join-sc...

On ScannerDanner Premium I will bring you right into my classroom at Rosedale Technical College. You will find page for page lectures taken right from my book as well as exclusive classroom type case studies. What is so special about these classroom case studies? I pull live problem vehicles directly into my classroom and we troubleshoot them in real time, using and applying the theory and testing procedures we learn during the classroom lectures. There is no better on-line training of how to troubleshoot automotive electrical and electronics systems anywhere!

Danner,a few days ago I apply this tip on a diagnosis on Peugeot to find why car had no scanner communication,no spark,no fuel pump and injector action and no nothing. I just tested MAP sensor wires,it had not 5v,and I just read a electric diagram and found a bad fusible oxidation. I cleaned and put a new fuse, after that car worked. That simple tip help too much. Thank you Danner.

Hey Danner, I have a daily driver 2012 silverado 1500 202k miles, codes ,172, 175, 442, 455, I did a plug wire change thinking it was that but when I checked the spark plugs all my passenger side plugs still looked clean and brand new while the driver side has the usual wear on em. I'm thinking bad ground on my fuel injector harness. I thought it also could of been the charcoal canister because I'm getting a strong gas smell by the gas tank after I driven it for about a half hour but then all 8 spark plugs would look new, I did a plug change in July. I don't know what's going on . I took my truck to a few shops they want to run test on top of tests and fix all the other stuff going on with it to but I'm not falling g for that after I seen your channel .. any ideas?

@ScannerDanner 2010 journey no codes no spark, 60psi fuel pressure There is no power to coils. I was looking at the diagram that the fuse 20 ,21 (asd)provides the power, but their good But it is also a relay. I just don't know if the relay is built inside the tpim because it looks like injectors and coils get power from it I haven't checked the 5v yet

Brightens your day when you find it on the first try. :) You have to really stop and enjoy those moments when they happen; and remember them when you're on a hard diag and tearing apart your 5th panel and have half the car tore apart. lol

Nice find. I had an inspection reverse light on a 21 Hyundai the other day, with a little observation I found evidence of collision damage and the broken ground wire. Taking your time and paying attention to what you're doing can really pay off in these situations

I was working on a Ford expedition. One headlight was dim, one was bright, a running light wouldnt turn off unless you turned of the vehicle. I checked voltages which were a bit lower than it was supposed to be. I suspected a bad ground, added one with a power probe, worked great. Checked the diagrams, and i immediately knew. The truck had a new radiator, and the main ground was a common ground for everything up front and was on a bracket that is part of the core support. It was a rare occurrence of an idiot induced long circuit. The ground was coming through another circuit entirely. I bolted down the ground ring i found with both circuits shared ground and it was fixed.

Can guarantee that if this went through your normal "Jimbobs Auto" that they'd have thrown a PCM, TPS, CMP, and so on at it. What I always preach is start simple. People think that because it's expensive or electronic that it's likely to fail. Start with the simplest things first e.g. checking harness integrity. The beauty of these videos is that most of these diagnosis fall back on basics. They can even be done without a scope.

I watch many diag oriented vids (yours, pine hollow, south main with Eric O). Eric O used a light bulb hooked to power and grounded to his faulty circuit, and unplugged sensors and lightly jiggled the harness and found his fault that way when the light flickered. Its a valid method. I suspect on delicate circuits the scope method is safer, but on a 12v circuit down and dirty is faster. Just a thought, opinions? All feedback is welcome, from Danner to readers.

If you substitute a test light right at the ECM pin, as the load, will it light the light when the driver turns on?
@Phantomas2011
@Phantomas2011 5 ай бұрын
Hi Paul Thank you for your response!!! Sorry for the delay So just so I’m clear on this… Test light to positive side of the battery than touch the pin on the computer and see if it lights up when the computer commands it on, right? I just don’t want to damage anything THANK YOU! 👊
@ScannerDanner
@ScannerDanner 5 ай бұрын
@@Phantomas2011that is correct and no you won't hurt the ECM. Just make sure it is a ground side switched circuit. If it is power side switched, the test light need to go to ground. Most outputs are ground side switched btw. How to tell? The EGR solenoid wire that doesn't go to the computer will tell you what's in the computer. If it goes to a fuse (power), then it is ground side switched. If it goes to a ground, the it is power side switched.

Hi Paul, THANK YOU AGAIN FOR YOUR QUICK RESPONSE!!! 🙏👊 I didn’t test the pin we spoke about yet BUT, I’m finding 9 volts on the 5 volts reference circuit, that circuit feeds three sensors. I disconnected all three sensors that are on that circuit and there was no change using the old computer or new computer! BTW the 5 volt reference is a ground

And of course the wire was buried on the bottom of a bulk harness under two layers of conduit wrapped in electrical tape near a subharness split! That Cadillac made you WORK for that one! LOL Well, at least it wasn't a slightly dented coaxial cable integral to a $1,200 harness that flagged 14 hours of book time to replace! ;)

@ScannerDanner

@@benhall8946a horn contact issue in the clockspring isn't going to cause a no crank no start condition. And an ignition switch issue shouldn't blow the horn! It doesn't crank right? Time to do some testing at the starter and then back track from there.
