I truly have to say, I'm an auto technician. I went to tech school back in 2009, just got into a dealership position about 3 years ago (a large gap of time where technology has truly picked up). What you Paul have done and continue to do as far as these videos with the classes, troubleshooting in the field, etc has been absolutely amazing to watch and learn from. You go so much deeper into diagnosing things, far more than anyone else who I have "picked brains" from in the field. I seriously cannot thank you enough for the amount of effort you put in for those like myself who want to truly become better. I am a big fan, I have subscribed and I will at some point soon be purchasing a copy of your works. You sir are awesome! Thank you!

I absolutely agree with all your comments !!! As an experienced technician in New Zealand doing diagnostic work for over 10 years using scopes I always get a little something from your videos. Today was the coil turn on oscillations and what actually produced them work respect to the 2ndry ignition. GOLD! I recommend your channel to other mechanics all the time. Thanks for all the effort you put into fighting the good fight :)

I was a ASE master tech from 1975 - 1985. I quit and started a remodeling/repair business for 35 years. I have continued to perform all my own repairs. Now I'm thinking of semi retiring and going back to working on cars part time. I have fully enjoyed all of your videos that will prep me to take my skills to greater levels. Thanks you for your time and effort to educate us.

ScannerDanner no prob. I attended courses at The School of Automotive Machinists (Sam Racing) in Houston Texas. One of the best engine builders in the world. So I learned to build and machine and study race engine theory. But over the past 10 yrs I have gotten alot of general Auto stuff. Alot of times it way more difficult to diagnose and figure out what's going on. But anyway I have a snap on Solus that I use and that's how I found you a couple years ago. You teach a difficult occupation very well sir. I may pick up your premium before long.

Amazingly informative presentation. Thank you so much! At 58 years old I still find this fascinating. I spent a couple thousand on a nice Pico rig about 20+ years ago and it's amazing how much you can learn just from diving in. I've been out of the professional auto repair business for 35 years but still do a lot of my own work. Unfortunately my rig was stolen years ago but watching this has kind of reignighted my curiosity. I may have to get another Pico to keep me out of trouble 😉. Danner, great job, thank you.

Case in point, I had a P0301. Cylinder 6 and 7 had no compression. Also, misfires aren't the only thing that can cause misfire codes. Misfire monitors, in my opinion, can only be trusted to tell you that the crankshaft slowed down. Bad ujoints, bad engine mounts etc can cause the crankshaft to slow down and can cause misfire codes. I've seen it myself.

hello there.....I have a buick lesabre 1995 that has the same engine 3800 in my car and I am dealing with 2 misfire.....The number 4 cylinder ignition coil isn't firing at all and cylinder number 2 will sort of spark but not like consist like the rest of the ignition coils......First I tried swapping coils around but the problem didn't move at.....the coil that I thought it was bad (after switching them around) was good so my next step is the ignition coil module system.....After putting a new ignition coil control module in it I am still stuck with the same misfire.....I even put new spark plugs wires in it (since I change the spark plugs last year and forgot to get new plug wires) nothing change at all.....I even bought new ignition coil pack all three of them and the problem is still the same........I wanna know whats my next step to pin point the causes of 2 misfire that I'm trying to fix......thanks..... love your videos keep up the good work brother.

@scannerdanner I have a capacitive pickup that is very similar to the one you use. I use it with my verus and a small handheld similar to this one. It will not show nearly as much detail with the spark event as the ones I have seen you use. Connections are correct. Do you think it is just because it may be a cheap knockoff? Thanks, justin

Dan is it possible to detect misfires on control O2 sensors values alone? For example, we have a wideband probe precat and narrowband postcat for control. If the control probe is periodically hitting really low numbers (like 0.1V), can this be an indication of a misfire, too? Let's say the manifold and the exhaust is absolutely leakproof...
@ScannerDanner

Scan data O2 values can be used as a guide, but alone? No. You can scope an O2 signal and then sync off of an ignition firing event and use that to find the offending cylinder, but this test is very difficult to do and interpret

@@ScannerDanner thanks! It is actually a case, where ECU is not the best at reporting and detecting intermittent misfires becausenit constantly wanta to equalize cylinders inside the bank (it is a Bosch unit that reports a cylinder rough running parameter), it constantly reports faulty pte cats and post cats, cat efficiency... All that has been replaced twice, checked for air leaks and exhaust leaks... It always reports control probes ageing even when new. And I can see them drop really low, then normalize without the precats even reacting to that drop.

You say in class: “no primary coil osculation, means you have secondary coil problems”. It should be you have a “secondary problem” could be the coil, plug or cable (or combinations). Thx for this excellent vid!
