How do you setup your scans? Let everyone know in the comments!

In this video I talk about 3 scanners I like to use to filter through stocks on a daily/weekly basis for day trading and for swing trading.
The more specific your scanner is, the less likely it will pull up stocks, but when they do then you have a higher probability of finding a setup that fits your trading regimen.

Use thinkScript Editor to add "within 2 bars"

You're a good teacher. Now please teach to those of us who are brand new to Thinkorswim. For example, when I look at the three boxes in which we place our scan dimensions, price is not in any of them. In the middle of the screen, I read "Click on +Add filter" to add a filter. But, I can't find "CLick on +Add Filter anywhere on the screen.

Good info. I have been working on some uptrend / dip scans in TOS for swing trading too. It seems that trends can be found using MAs but the trick is finding the dips. I have been experimenting with the TTM Trend scan parameter. It detects when there is a up or down trend so I use it to find dips on my momentum list. Not precise but seems to work.

Should also have mentioned that these scans can also be used on all time frame charts too. These scanners are great for finding those perfect stock setups. Thanks for sharing, have been experimenting with the ThinkScript custom coding myself for a little while now.

Price, any way you can SHARE the workspace? I'm new at this and have been unsuccessful and figuring out how to create the "custom" study? All say Stock on the left. Thank you.

Sounds like all you need to do is in the top right when you click "Add filter", select "Study". This allows you to add studies to your scans. If you then go to the right side and click the pencil button, you can "Add condition" and "Edit" them to build custom study searches. Hope this helps! For the Swing Trade #1, how long would you say do you usually hold. I actually used today morning and it’s up 40 bucks on a 500 dollar investment. How long should you hold?. Thanks the scanner is awesome

You should manage the trade , don't sell your self short..sounds like you might have a nice runner there. O All ways take profits into strength...so you could always sell a 3erd or half and let the rest work for more cash then sell half 1 more time. Let the rest run.. then sell out of the trade were you think is the best...Good luck

Hello thank you so much for the video. I was trying to follow along with your programming regarding the custom item with the programming language, but did ok on items 1 and 2, but you never showed how to setup Items 3 and 4. Thanks for the video ... is there any reason you also switch from SMA to EMA when you change the lengths from 50 to 20 in several of the conditions of the second swing trade scanning setup?

EMAs are more quickly responsive to changes in price than SMAs, which hypothetically would be better for shorter time frames. Otherwise, they are more or less interchangeable depending on personal preference. Try overlapping a 50d EMA with a 50d SMA and color them differently to see their subtle differences. Hope this helps!

Why do you use the shorter time crossover? Doesn't the longer term crossover REQUIRE the shorter term crossover has already occurred?? How could you have the longer term crossover take place without the short term crossover having not already occurred?

wow, great video and great scan, Thank You. What do you think about the study called " long Haul" have you used it, could that work for swing trading?

Thanks! I took a look at the Long Haul filter, it is a reasonable combination of different technical indicators. If used, I would suggest using it in combination with price action. Keep in mind that no indicator is 100%; just take a look at the Long Haul triggers for "ACB" 2 years ago on the daily chart! Good trade management is still essential.

This depends completely on the trading strategy involved; it depends on how you have defined your entry and exit. Ideally, as long as possible!

Nice video. Please what time frame are you using for the swing trade using the custom scan? I would think it's the day - time frame, but i am not getting the same result on the chart. I was playing with it and I got it to appear once of the 3 so I copied and pasted it to the other 2. In the script editor after “SMA” just type within 2 bars like it’s on the video and that’s it mine looked exact

I also had the biggest red day today I started the day buying a market buy on Dgaz on a spike up and got filled at the highest point. I then panic sold it thinking it’s Ugaz season Dgaz prob wouldn’t recover. I got filled at 105.29. One question would you be able to make a video on how to avg down? For example u take a 1/5 position on Ugaz when is too soon to buy in again? Some people say buy in again at a support buy if it’s the same day then what if tomorrow it drops more? What do you think sir? Given let’s say 25k account

I'm sorry to hear that. It ultimately depends on your trading strategy. It is a common strategy to start with a smaller position size and then add more as the trade goes in the direction you anticipated. Another common method is to simply keep position sizes smaller than 1/5 your capital, and risk no more than 1% of your entire capital per trade. There are many approaches to this, but it all boils down to risk management.

If /NG has turned tides and moves into an upward bullish momentum, then yes certainly UGAZ has a chance of hitting the $32 mark. However, be careful as UGAZ experiences time-decay (3x leveraged), and so will lose value over time. Best of luck!

I cannot set my filters to look exactly like yours. I can set the stock filters %change, Last, and volume - but cannot figure out how to set the custom study as you have. Also, Mtn Climbers isn't listed as a query I can load. Can you share that with us? I believe Thinkorswim gives you the option to share it. Thanks!
