Scars from prior surgery or from accidental injury can sometimes heal in an undesirable fashion. While scars can not be eliminated, they can often be improved in appearance, either by making them appear finer, or re-orienting them in a direction that hides them more effectively.

It was more difficult than I thought to find a surgeon with scar revision experience I was happy with. Also finding one who understood MY goals for a scar revision. I fx my humerus into 5 pieces, underwent ORIF and then ended up with a fasciotomy due to compartment syndrome. In total there are 5 noticeable incisions from my upper tricep to my palm and posterior thumb also. The primary incision from my bicep to my palm has not healed in my elbow after being closed for 7 mo. Because it has become so thick, painful and contracted we have opted to do a wound revision before 1 yr. I'm not as concerned with aesthetics as I am with function and pain. Any aesthetic bonus is great. However I had difficulty finding a plastic surgeon with trauma/scar revision experience AND that supported my goals vs more concerned with look than function. This Thr will be the revision and my 13th OR trip since Aug on this arm. The ortho did a fantastic job screwing my bone back together, however at this point after consulting my PCP, pain mgmnt dr and suggestions from my orthotist I opted to seek a plastic surgeon instead of allowing the ortho to do another revision. We believe it's not healing because of the amount of tension that was on it and the fact that it's right in the bend of my elbow and I'm a wheelchair user. Here's to nothing, hoping it helps. We've opted for general anthesthia since he'll be removing/revising pretty much the entire length of the scar bicep to palm.

I have a surgical scar from when I was an infant. I had a malrotation of my gut. After 3 surgeries I've been left with a horizontal scar across my stomach just above my belly button. I am now in my 20's and am so over covering it. It doesn't look that bad but it's so noticeable at the same time I just don't know if they can do anything. (The doctor did an amazing job but it was used as a zipper for all 3 surgeries at Stanford Hospital)

Hello there. I am curious as to why the body cannot completely rid itself of scars, when you consider that a bone can completely heal back to its original state after a fracture, and that the skin cells of the epidermis are constantly renewing themselves. Based on this, I don't understand why cutting through the skin completely has to leave a permanent mark.

I have been in a accident when I was ten years old over my left eye it's obvious that it wasn't stitched properly at the hospital I have been living with it for years I'm not 38 can it still be fixed I hate it so much

Hello Elizabeth, Since the scar is around the eye, it can depend on a variety of factors including orientation, skin laxity and quality in the area. While scars cannot be eliminated, they can often be improved in appearance, either by making them finer, or re-orienting them in a direction that hides them more effectively.

1994 Pilonidal cyst removal with open wound healing to prevent recurrence. This left just the scar covering the tailbone. Since then the scar breaks open or suffers abrasions at least twice a year. In skinny with no ass to speak of. The end result is no cushion or give at the tailbone when sitting, bending over, etc.. Rowing was a sport I had to reluctantly give up. Many bottoms and underwear are a no go. Those I can tolerate are are sent to the tailors to remove as much fabric as possible from the seat seam. What is a possible scar revision in this case? Could a simple graft work to move the scar while adding thicker tissue over the tailbone? Or can anything be done? Thank you in advance for any input or advice you have to offer. Cheers!

It is difficult to tell you what exactly to do because it depends on how big the bump is, where it is located, and how close the scar is to the lip border. The best advice we can give you is to set up a consultation with your board-certified plastic surgeon. Best of luck!

Hello! I inherited an old white surgical scar (it’s semi-small but still visible) from a past injury as an infant. It’s locating right between my eyebrows and nose bridge. Is there POSSIBLE treatment in reducing the appearance of the scar? I’m aware that it can’t be removed and that it’ll always be scarred but I wanted to know if there’s any hope in reducing the appearance of it!…Thank you!

Doctor i need help and your opinion. A few years ago when I was about 13 , there was a bump on the back of my head and I needed surgery for it. They took out what looked like a tumor (but it wasn't harming my body) . The scar on my head would then stretch and now it is about 3 -3.5 inches . Now I'm 15 almost turning 16 and I have a choice this summer to surgically remove the scar or not. I know the risks of it stretching out again but I really want to get this big scar of my head because I want my old hair back. Should I take the surgery ? Will my age affect the outcome of the surgery ? And what are the chances of the scar stretching at my age? I hope you see this because I'm really stressed about this atm and I need an honest opinion from an experienced surgeon

I'm not sure if this is too late and you have already made your decision, but you could potentially take out portion of the scar but not all. There are some risks of widening but in most cases the scar usually won't widen as much as before. It's a tough spot and I wish you the best of luck in your surgery.

Hi, I have a scar and i did seek the advice of a plastic surgeon. I have an eye shaped stretched out scar on my breast from having a mole removed with stitch marks and it is also puffy (I am female but am logged into my partner's account). It is 9 years old so it has fully matured. The plastic surgeon told me that because of the tension in the area, excision would lead to a wider, fatter scar. I really dislike the appearance of it particularly because it is in a noticeable area. If surgical removal isn't an option is there any other option to improve the appearance? He didn't really give me other alternatives but i was very upset when he practically said nothing could be done. Your response would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

It's hard to give a clear answer without examining the area, but in general, I would say that It really depends on the size of the current scar, its location, and what kind of local tissue forces are acting on it. For example, when I look at scars on the breast, the scar revision's success will also partially depend on whether gravity is causing the breast tissue to pull down on the area of the scar. Depending on the location of the scar on the breast, the amount of "pull" will vary. The same goes with the size of the breast -- if it is a heavier breast and exerting more tension on the scar, then the scar is more likely to widen when revised. As for non-surgical options, there are a few, but generally speaking, for a scar that is 9+ years out, most likely the best option is to surgically revise it, if it is a good candidate for that. The best thing would perhaps be to have another plastic surgeon take a look at it and see if they have a different opinion!

Every scar is different in terms of the exact location, position relative to other nearby structures, orientation, and size. The outcome depends on all of these factors. I have a scar on my forehead and chin for a year... The one on my forehead is not deep just dark... I looks like a birth mark... Can I get rid of it with a normal ance scar removal... And the one on my chin can it be relocated ?

It is difficult to give you exact advice, but in general the scar on your chin may be relocated depending on factors such as skin laxity, quality of skin, etc. Generally speaking, for your forehead scar, most creams don't make that much of a dramatic difference with scars but it may vary. You could look into lasers or an appointment with a board-certified dermatologist or plastic surgeon.

No, it is not too risky, but how much the scar can be improve will depend on where it is located on the head. The best way to tell if a scar can be improved is to set up a consultation with your board-certified plastic surgeon.
