The old bridge did really well to last 140 years. Even today, infrastructure is usually designed to only last 100 years.
@MasterCivilEngineering3 жыл бұрын
Right sir
@xaiano79411 ай бұрын
It was repainted many times which extended its life, the new bridge is designed to lay less time but requires no painting, shorter life for low maintenance
@nigelkthomas95017 жыл бұрын
Excellent, but if I'd been in charge of this reconstruction I'd have taken the opportunity to eliminate that short section of single track just east of the bridge. A scissors crossing about half a mile outside York station would allow far more flexibility. A train could enter York from Scarborough at the same time another one is departing for Scarborough.
@ernestglum76886 жыл бұрын
What is the purpose of that section? Is it to prevent more than one train on the bridge at once?
@PeterALoch5 жыл бұрын
At 5:46 it has company name on crane. Company is out of UK NOT Scarborough Maine

I agree, why leave something that silly after spending the money?
@mikeedwards77245 жыл бұрын
Do you really think that the project team, sponsors and designers didn't check that they were doing what was right and best value for taxpayers money?
@nfarnell15 жыл бұрын
Actually yes, and it would not be the first time the Political nose was thrust into sensible public works projects. It was probably presumptuous or my part to criticize without more information but there has been clear examples of this behavior where I live. Your point is taken.

Why did they leave 100 metres of single track just behind the bridge?
@xaiano7946 жыл бұрын
because of the junction design - to add double track would require 2 additional sets of points, resignalling and would require more maintenance - there would be little to no benefits since the volume of traffic is extremely low and basically a complete waste of money.

@samfrancisco80955 жыл бұрын
There is a speed reduction because of that interchange. It would be worth it in the long run.
@xaiano7945 жыл бұрын
@@samfrancisco8095 the speed restriction is due to the curve of platform 4/approach to 5 - there would literally be no benefit at all
@xaiano7945 жыл бұрын
@Giuseppe Battagliese You're wrong - I drive trains here at York and you don't understand the track layout, trust me there is no benefit despite what it may look like. We will be doubling trains over this route in December this year and there won't be any issues caused by this junction whatsoever. I completely agree that there are many bottlenecks, particularly at York but this is not one of them - if they were going to spend money on York I'd say an additional track out the north end would make a huge difference, up to skelton jn, and realign the slow over skelton bridge so that speeds could be raised to 60-70mph.

I don't think any state DoT takes on the task of bridge replacement. I don't know of any states that have the equipment or specialized personnel to do that. Are you sure it wasn't contracted out?

Just wondering why they hauled the bridge sections and the crawler through the streets when the could have just railed it in? It's your rail line so you can put it in a yard and move it in and out when you want without permits or the possibility of damaging historic buildings. It'd be quieter for the residents too.

The occupants of the houses just in front of the big crane must have been REALLY disappointed when it was all finished!
@Miko_Jones5 жыл бұрын
Not nearly as much as the owners of the 3 houses demolished to make way for the pad for the giant crane were.
@morbideddie4 жыл бұрын
@@Miko_Jones Source? The railway embankment was steepened to accommodate the crane pad but no houses were affected. The Abbey guest house is the end terrace and it's still standing.

If the bridge is 140 yrs. old, then so to are the piers. They must be sound, yet no mention of them.
@xaiano79411 ай бұрын
No, the piers are significantly older. The bridge they are removing is not the original span. The piers are stone and didn't need replacing

WTF do you know about building railway bridges?
@jasinere355 жыл бұрын
cos the older one was lattice style which is lighter as its made out of crisscrossing bars where the new ones one straight plate girder with no holes in it & its thicker steel plates where the lattice it layered plates & bars to build up its strength
@xaiano7945 жыл бұрын
large steel members require far less maintenance than lattice construction. it's cheaper to maintain.

Not a Black face anywhere on this site..... MMmmm... No wonder it went smoothly! Here in South Africa, all the rail sections would have been Stolen, the staff would continuously be on Strike and funds for their salaries would not be available halfway coz the directors embezzled all of it to buy themselves Ferraris and 6 million Pound houses for their 3 wives!
