Thank you for including the captions, showing the other lines interspersed between the main ones: lines like "washes the grave with silvery tears," "a soldier cleans and polishes a gun," "war bellows blazing in scarlet battalions," "generals order their soldiers to kill," "and to fight for a cause they've long ago forgotten." All of which leads me to believe: It's NOT a song about unrequited love. It's the voice of a dying soldier, telling another soldier to find the girl he left behind. The "impossible tasks" represent the life they can no longer have, and the ways he wants her to honor his memory. S&G's version, being released at the height of the Vietnam War, became a subliminal song of protest, because not everybody could hear ALL of the words.
@petemavus2948Ай бұрын

Countertenor...I've not heard of that classification. Tell me more. He isn't in falsetto. Sounds very natural for him. Not a register we often hear from a man. I wonder what register he speaks in.
@monicaluketich6913Ай бұрын
@@PleaseNThankYouI believe that the term countertenor is from opera. It can be a falsetto in modern music terminology but is also a true " head voice" that as been trained in that range. I have not heard this gentleman before - I'll have to look him up. I took 10+ yrs of vocal training while in my 50s to regain my speech after a traumatic brain injury. My teacher was in her 70s and had never tried using singing therapy, but I was a retired science teacher and brain tumor survivor. It took us several years but I fully regained my speech.
@PleaseNThankYouАй бұрын
@monicaluketich6913 An enormous feat of human willpower! I was a paramedic for 25 years and had a friend, debilitated by a stroke, and was never able to recover much physically but regained his speech enough to communicate. It's all a miracle to me. Congratulations on your recovery and ongoing endeavors! I looked up the vocal ranges and saw that it was as you described it. The young man singing is part of an acapella group, and when his video popped up, I recognized him. I think of Frankie Valli of The Four Seasons, when I think of a "falsetto." This man doesn't seem to be using his vocal cords in the same way. Amazing upper range for a man. Well, I've learned a bit of new stuff that I will still never be able to use. It doesn't matter how hard I try. My voice cracks a few notes in either direction. It was actually the song title that made me click on the video. A favorite. Scarborough Fair.
@monicaluketich6913Ай бұрын
@gigiquillian4776 Even if your voice cracks, like mine does now at 68 and not singing on a regular basis, it is still fun to sing/ hum to yourself. It will strengthen your vocal cords. Yes, I, too, associate falsetto will Frankie Valli, but this man is what you get with operatic training instead of singing on the street corner! Amazing, isn't it? I love all those songs I grew up. Best of luck to you, and continue to listen to music. I think of music as emotions made audio able.

Whats with " polish a gun "?
@kateshiningdeer3334Ай бұрын
@@IamAlohaSo, those words are from the "Canticle" part of Simon and Garfunkel's version (Scarborough Fair & Canticle) - but not all of the lyrics are in this version. (Which I personally missed, being a fan of the original, and you lose the story being told when so few of the words are there.) I have a sheet music version that has all the words, which are as follows: "On the side of a hill in the deep forest green, Tracing of Sparrow on snow-crested brown, Blankets and bedclothes the child of the mountain, Sleeps unaware of the clarion call. On the side of a hill, a sprinkling of leaves, Washes the grave with silvery tears, A soldier cleans and polishes a gun. War bellows blazing in scarlet battalion, Generals order their soldiers to kill, And to fight for a cause they've long ago forgotten. Considering the time period Paul Simon was writing in, I've always assumed it was a bit of a protest about the Vietnam war, but really, it describes any wartime period. Scarborough Fair is an OLD song, but the Canticle is entirely Paul's creation, as I understand it. It's worth listening to the original once you know the Canticle lyrics, because some of them are kind of hard to make out if you don't know what's being said. Hope that helps!
@PhoenixLyonАй бұрын
@@kateshiningdeer3334I'm also in like with Cantjcle, it's the harmony. Are you familiar with Find the Cost of Freedom by Crosby, Stills and Nash? They did a little tweaking and released that version on the album Daylight Again. Very nice . ✌️💖😸
