You can’t honestly say we should be looking to counter attack Newcastle or Sheffield. You can always set up to counter when out of possession and revert back to possession if the counter fails.

Here after the loss against Villarreal. We really need to learn and figure out a way to score against low blocks. Counter attacks don’t always work and can expose us to irreparable situations.

Yeah we sat back heaps and hit alot of teams with a fast counter but constant attacks and pressure like city and liverpool have. Ole didn't have that mate hahaha

We didn't attack.. we absorbed attacks and goals, then looked for a chance to counter.. because we had speed. We were basically in top level survival mode.. reacting enough to get to stay in top 4 but never seriously contend for top spot. Which is all the Glazers wanted anyway. In any business you don't need to be number one, just be around the top and the shareholders get good profits and are happy enough and demand more of the same. But once that top 4 is threatened they change the manager.

That has always been ManUnited trademark under SAF. Sadly under OGS it became less and less prominent moving more towards possessive football.

That's because the counter was king in SAF days.. also because teams attacked more freely, willing to lose the ball to have more chances. Football flowed... Making the counter one of the most dangerous moves. Now, teams do not want to give you any chance or the ball... Look at Pep's style, which is matched by all the coaches now. Leeds still goes all out like old days, and they get slapped around by almost all the teams

Fergie didn’t always counter, sometimes he played similar to how klopp’s Liverpool play now. He relied on counterattacks when he was playing in cup competitions away from home. The Chelsea 1-0 win at Stamford bridge, and the 4-1 schalke win in Germany are prime examples.

I believe OGS downfall this season started when he begun having favourites even though these certain players were performing poorly week in week out..He didn't change nor adapt his tactics...anyone who's watched football this season has noticed that midtable clubs are now well organised defensive wise and also attacking wise.. where on possesion loss they would intensify the pressing and had also improved on the counter attack...man utd fell prey to these factors and that's why we fell off the title race

Looks good, but this style of play was no longer sustainable, especially with teams now using strategic movement to break down that the low block that Maguire was supposed to play.

Under OGS United were happy to let the opposition attack thus absorbing goals in the beginning. They then relied on speed and skill to counter attack . Under Ralf its about control, repossesion and defending in all areas. This loses us the counter attack option as the ball is always surrounded in all 3 areas of the pitch by everybody with no holes or spaces to take advantage of. I hope this is a temporary condition and the attack improvement will follow, which is rather pathetic at present.

the squad inherently was best suited for counter attack(quality attackers but lacked good ball holding midfielders), and many of these connections show that during Ole's period he gave them freedom to develop their own fluid build up, If only he could get a midfielder this season, which he and Fletcher were trying for, things would've been very different right now

@@rana1561 OGS had Pogba, Bruno, Donnie, McFred, Matic, not perfect but certainly functional if managed well. OGS just had 1 tactic.. be the opposite of Mourinho and make everyone happy.. temporary euphoria but no real plan, game plan or strategy. Not sure about Ragnick though.. hiring a 62 year old who hasn't really won anything of note at the elite level after so long in the game is iffy..

Ronaldo is the absolute problem. We were on a huge form, huge string of unbeaten away run. When he came, he wanted that the attack must be centered around him. Ever wondered why our form dipped in the start of the season starting from the 5-2 battering on Leeds, until Ronaldo came, that started when we got beaten by Villa 1-0.
