WOW! Have you ever seen a more intimidating looking insect in your life? I might just be inclined to say I haven't! This spiny devil katydid certainly lived up to its name as a fearsome and awe-inspiring carnivorous insect! These large Orthopterans can be found in South America where they spend their nights methodically searching for food. They can and will take down any small animal they can overpower and feed on anything from other insects to lizards and other small vertebrates! How wild is that? Have you ever heard of the spiny devil katydid?

I can't blame you for not wanting to get bit by them. I I've been bitten by a few species of katydid and it's never fun. If it was just a quick bite that sliced it would be fine, but they chew

I didn't know that about the light reflecting off a katydid's antennae. Neat! Side-note: I'm sorry so many people want to see sting/bite videos. I usually avoid those and don't wish that upon you at all.

I can appreciate being a bit jazzed but intimidated … most people who like to tease ((or even hate-on)) others, many haven’t felt the absolute power of their movements … of the many legs and twisting ’n’ such … and they can slice the dickens out of soft fleshy things, especially humanoid beings actually holding them 😮… imagine a razor coming to life with a powerful and STRONG body, legs, mandibles, oh … and a brain. 🦗💚

If Jack is worried about getting bit by something then it must be brutal. I also don't wish it upon him if he doesn't want it. With that said it is still interesting how his brain seperates bites and stings. The pain from the katydid probably wouldn't be near as bad as any of his stings, but the creepy factor just keeps him from letting it happen. It makes me like him more, it makes him more relatable.

Spiny devil katydids are no joke, I think you were smart for presenting it in a manner that would keep it calmer. I was very happy to find the same species while we were down there, I regret not doing another night hike with you! As usual this was a great video, unusual to see you on edge but funny nonetheless. I handled one once, it didn’t bite me and the interaction was pretty standard for an orthopteran. Nice work!

The colour of these katydids, in particular, stands out in its own right to blend in with the forest colouration.

I dont want to see you get bitten...lol so no bite! Bite! Bite! From me... but it would be awesome to see film of its predation and eating. What would you feed these other then other Kady's? Looks like they might be on the lower end of the food chain there. I've always felt sorry for Kadydids as they seem to be lunch for so many things, like ants or snakes. There are 2 to 2½in medium or small ones where I'm at. When I was a teenager, I had grabbed one & it bit me. It did break skin. It doesn't hurt real bad but it feels very gross. It's electric feeling, kind of like a 9V to your tongue... but not.😊

It makes sense that you're interested in learning first hand the effects of various venoms. As for these katydids, I think it's reasonable to assume that their unenvenomed bites are probably akin wire cutters, and call it a day.

It helps in threat displays, they’ll raise their head up and flare their mandibles to ward off would be attackers

What would a millipede bite feel like?…Are they capable of biting da shht outta of 😢humans?? And same question about the katydid and cicadas?? Dude you let big spiders and centipedes, etc., sink their toxic venomous fangs and mandibles into ya…I’m just sayin bruh….seen worse gnawing and chompin down on your arm….🤷🏾‍♂️😅
