There’s a dark irony in the portrayal of diesels in the Railway Series. While the books portrayed diesels as harbingers of doom for steam engines, almost all the diesel classes portrayed in the stories would suffer the same fate less than a decade after the books’ publication.

Narrow Gauge captured this almost perfectly. Diesels were never safe at all. I just wish he’d tackled it with Class 40, or D199.

What happened then? Did the diesels basically got rekt because of electric ones or the roads?
@tim3172
@tim3172 3 жыл бұрын
@@hectorandres2921 Part of the "1955 Modernization (Modernisation) Plan" was to replace all steam traction with diesel or electric traction. Politics led to too many manufacturers of... varying... experience manufacturing diesels all rolling out options. MANY of these redundant offerings were unreliable, expensive to maintain, or both. BR later went through a normalization process leading to most of these diesels being replaced with a simplified set. The diesels taken off the rails were usually scrapped well before their original projected obsolescence date, hence the irony.

When I was a kid (during the Starr and Carlin era), no one I knew watched Thomas the Tank Engine, other than myself. Nowadays, since Carlin's departure and the show getting dumbed down to ridiculous levels, suddenly everyone is watching or is aware of it. It's a read disappointment. However, one thing I can say about modern "Fake Thomas", is that it does seem to have gotten rid of the issue of what the engines' drives and firemen are doing when they're getting into mischief. In "Fake Thomas" the engines seem to drive themselves. But in the old shows, I kept wondering: Do the engine crews just stand there and let the engines punish freight cars or fight each other? Do they chastise their engines for saying bad stuff later on? When Gordon refused to pull a special freight train and disrupted the turntable he was on, rolling himself into a ditch as a result, where was his driver to set the brakes?
@planetaryiam954
@planetaryiam954 3 жыл бұрын
With regards to Gordon rolling into the ditch, I believe his driver and fireman were outside his cab to turn him on the turntable. With Gordon being in steam, he tried to move forward slightly on his own to jam the turntable and...well, I think you know the rest.
@TaylorZanderFrancis

I just want to say, that your use of visuals and editing in this video were utterly magnificent. When you showcased footage of Gordon talking to the Fat Controller about the abolition of steam, your following narration, complete with railway footage and the harmonica rendition of Auld lang syne nearly brought a tear to my eye. It was just the perfect tone to convey the sad decline of the steam railway. Excellent work

@erical6338
@erical6338 3 жыл бұрын
This reminds me of what TVtropes said about TTTE having tear jerker moments. Sometimes people find the characters hard to look at when they're low, like when Thomas is about to cry after forgetting his train. "Poor Thomas was so sad he nearly cried." They're just so expressive, which made them good for little me, as a I had trouble distinguishing feelings as a kid. But a story/game about the town called Feelings and hours of TTTE made me better, except angry I still have some trouble with. If the mouth is closed, I can recognize anger. Maybe that's because of how TTTE angry faces tend to be, an angry frown?

Interesting thing: 1- Godred falling down the mountain did actually happen. On the Snowdon Mountain Railway's opening day in 1896, on the second trip from the summit number 1 LADAS fell down the mountain, and adding safety measures after that delayed the railway's opening by 2 months. Also, a local pub owner called Ellis died after he hit his head on a rock copying the driver and fireman in jumping out. 2- I didn't care about any of these happenings when I was younger and I still don't. 3- That picture of the engines in the scrap yard is me and my sister's favourite picture from the Railway Series. Credit for reading more than the Three Railway Engines, and not sticking to Henry being stuck in the tunnel like he was there forever. Also kind of an interesting fact about the Culdee Fell Railway, it was mentioned in a learning segment once, though wasn't ever again. I'd wager that they've considered adapting the Culdee Fell Railway into the TV series at least once or twice (both in the model series or CGI series, though it was likely never actually done due to either budget reasons or more screen time for other characters), much like how they introduced the Small Railway into the TV Series back in 2015. I suppose that's what's good about the fanbase, though, picking up the slack where the TV Series can't or won't.

Gordon saw damned near a century of service. When he was new he was top of the line. A product of a country bouncing back from war. Forty years later? He is having to come to ter!s with the fact his like is all but done. While he has a home in sodor and his brother has been grand enough to be spared the torch (and even then it was a close thing had funds not been raised.) To hear that all that you are, all those of your kind have been deemed obsolete and have all been replaced not just with a differing model, but a wholly differing thing. And yet Gordon took his retirement with grace and dignity.

It's not real, it's REALISTIC, except for the parts that have to do with sentience. But Thomas not realizing he forgot his train's just too real for an animated show. I still have Percy's Ghostly Trick, a classic video and the box says "Live Action Animation", so don't tell me it wasn't animated when they used "toy trains", as my mom called the models. He should've realized a lot sooner than he did, maybe as long as it takes someone to realize OMG, I forgot my pants or my shoes, even if you justify his unawareness by saying he was so excited and absentminded. He pulled coaches about all the time before that as a shunter, so he, being alive, should know how coaches feel in that story.

TBH, The godred story reminds me of Eastern airline flight 401 when a plane crashed due to pilot mistake killing 101 lives. The plane was destroyed but it part was in perfect condition and was used on other planes which sparks ghost sighting.

Hey lad, did ya know that dismantling engines IS A REAL THING? The Thin controller said that probably cuz he wanted to see if Sir Handel was actually sick, as you dismantle an engine to fix problems with it Irl. But anyways, nice vid :)

If steam engines are getting scrapped because diesel engines are cheaper, than the hatred would be justified. There's being accepting of those who are different, and then there's ignoring your own best interests and embracing you extinction.

I have never heard anyone suggest the railway series was authoritarian or racist, but when you said it I have to believe that people (trolls, perhaps) will say that about anything that people like out of spite or a poorly adjusted sense of humour. Considering that race doesn't exist for sentient trains and that deisels are an obvious metaphor for obseletism, I can't allow myself to believe that anyone would accuse the stories of such things with any amount of sincerity.

You know, recently I’ve been writing the story of Thomas and Friends where in a literary form I write it where one episode leads to the next, leads to the next. I’m trying to include every episode, movie, and special. But now that I watched this I wonder if I’d be able to mix The Railway with Thomas & Friends

I think it's sad they made some dark stories in the RWS books because kids probably freaked out from reading these stories with their parents. I think it's for the better that they didn't adapt the Mountain Engines into the TV series because of how dark the stories are on the books and also because it wasn't possible to turn the characters into models for the show (and even if it was possible, it wouldn't have been financially possible because the models in the show for the other characters are high quality looking characters that cost a lot of money to make).

16:53 I knew the story sounded all too familiar. That's because it happened in my hometown in Colorado Springs. An 0-4-2T number 4 on the Manitou and Pikes Peak Cog Railway broke a side rod and ran away in 1896. It was scrapped shortly afterward. I never saw that picture, even though I knew all too well about it! Thanks!

As someone who’s watched this video probably like 20 times now because I just love your voice so much, I don’t think I would necessarily call these stories “scary”. I mean sure, if you were in the situation of some of them it would be scary for YOU, but I don’t really think most of these would qualify as “terrifying”. I don’t know, maybe I don’t know what I’m talking about. After all I’m just a naive autistic young man who doesn’t understand things unless they’re directly explained to me.
