Through most of this movie I found her character to be selfish and immature, but in this scene I fully support her kicking the butts of all those blustering fools that can't even let somebody come into town and have a meal in peace. I felt bad for the tavern owner who had a really cool place but it was trashed by one brawl. It would be cool if somebody duplicated this restaurant in real life as kind of an homage to this film
@ShaolinShadowStroke

Actually that WOULD be cool. I always wondered why you don't see these kinds of restaurants anywhere. Every Golden Harvest/Shaw Bros film from the 70s to late 80s had set pieces like that, and they looked awesome. @TheSamuraiGoomba

I rewatched this film recently and saw this scene in a new light. Initially, I had the attitude of "well these jerks deserve it for starting a fight." But Jen really is very naive about the jianghu. She flaunts the Green Destiny sword openly. When those martial men see it, they come over to find out what connection she has with Li Mu Bai. She boasts that she defeated him. Either she's a lying thief who stole his sword, or she's a true enemy of his. So maybe they challenged her because they are friends of Li Mu Bai, or maybe they challenged her because they wanted to become more famous by defeating someone so strong, or maybe they wanted to trounce a lowly thief. But her bragging caused this misunderstanding. Even when they attack, they are careful to explain to her they are attacking. They do ask for a match with her. At no point does she ever display any courtesy or respect towards them. Just based on her age, she should be a little respectful of a senior martial artist. Even if she is stronger. Her rudeness escalates the situation and turns potential friends into enemies. During the fight, she spouts poetry about how great she is and continues to insult her foes. The degree of offense she causes ensures bad feeling. If her intent wasn't to kill them all, then she had to know that this poor behavior would create a rift between herself and others. Their intent in challenging her may have been good or evil, but how she responds reveals her extreme naivete. When she runs crying to Michelle Yeoh's character, Michelle tries to explain this to her, but she still fails to understand.

That's also the difference between samurai sword and Chinese sword. Chinese sword is more like foil, one-handed, light-weighted, self-defensing. Quentin's Katanas are two-handed, offensive, heavy-weighted, for the real combat. Carrying Heavy weapon is considered savage yet carrying a sword is a hallmark of nobility. Chinese two-handed Dao (like machete or katana) is only used in the army.

Something lost in translation at 3:47. She did not refer to herself as a godess, but a xian, which is an immortal being beyond all worldly matters, including gender. This is echoed near the end of the poem when she vows to defeat Eu-mei (a female-only monestary) and Wudang (a male-only monastery).

I saw this in an old theatre in downtown San Diego before it was dubbed, so it was subtitled like this version. IIRC this came out before The Matrix, and there was a silent awe in the audience as these scenes played out. Both this movie and Matrix were groundbraking, BUT they also remixed and refined the traits that already made kung fu movies great. It's actually hilarious how she takes offense of their long-winded names (and his especially) and informs him he will be the first to feel the blade, and his comedic reaction is like, oh shit, maybe I should've kept my mouth shut. Beautiful piece of comedy right there.

I saw this film in IMAX in downtown Chicago with a good friend 21 or 22 years ago. Watched it last night with my 8 year old daughters at home. Long, but good movie. I grew watching martial art movies in the 80s on Saturday afternoons or Sunday afternoons. CTHD was fun when it was released. It was still fun last night. Respect. Thanks for sharing this. 👍

Fantastic! Loved it! As a former martial artist there were some very clever little tidbits in the sword fighting. One where she breaks all of the ringlets on the other persons sword. That is supposed to be like the Grandmaster sword with the ringlets that will catch the blade of an attacking sword, but she just sliced through the ringlets making that sword more useless. It was just a blip in the scene but a clever detail for anyone who knows the different weapons. Actually it was a pretty neat display of a variety of weapons of the time. I appreciated the authenticity of that aspect. Very well done fight scene, even though of course in reality you would be hard pressed to find someone who really had those skills, but in the mythology of course they do exist, and perhaps even at some point in time they did in reality as well. After I saw my Grandmaster astral project one time I started to believe some of the mythology just might actually be true! 😊😊👍👍😉😉

I think it's supposed to show the moment she realised he was wearing an iron bracer. It's not that she's hurt necessarily, it's more like that strike was more solid and painful than it should have been. So the next thing she does is rip off his sleeve, and expose him as a fraud.

It's the wire work that helps make this crap movie very pathetic. The action choreography also makes it pretty much crap as a movie...... my nickname for this smelly turd...Crouching Crap, Hidden Shit And yes, I love Kung Fu movies. I've watched HUNDREDS... When Bruce Lee died, HK, China, Taiwan and several other countries cranked out HUNDREDS and hundreds of Kung fu movies..to find his replacement The Jose Theater, in San Jose CA, would show 3 for $1....and changing them regularly....I virtually lived in that movie theater. Most were crap......but there were actually a good many with good stories
