Scenes my brother and I filmed in and around Columbus during the mid-1960's. My brother was really fascinated by the construction on the State House grounds when they installed the underground parking garage. Soundtrack features our uncle, Chuck Selby, and his orcherstra performing at Valley Dale.

The music, the cars, the dignifying way you don't see much of in people today. I've always felt connected to this era although I wasn't even thought of when this was filmed.

Born and raised in Columbus, in the Linden area. and was married in 1965. Still am, to the same wonderful lady, 55 years later. My wife's prom was at Valley Dale and Chuck Selby's band played. My first class at OSU was in the old University Hall. What a fire trap that was. I could go on and on, but I won't. Great video. Thanks.

I was just a kid then but remember it well. All of this looks like home to me, both the time and place. The cars, the buildings, the way people dressed, etc. I remember going on shopping trips downtown from the 'burbs on an orange CTC bus, the forerunner of COTA, and seeing those round-back trolley busses that still operated - but not for much longer - in the downtown area. We'd spend the day down there and have lunch at one of the themed Lazarus restaurants (there was one on every floor) or the several drug or five-and-dime stores with lunch counters along High Street. It may have already been mentioned, but many of the clips are from summer and fall of 1964. The Statehouse garage was built in '63 - '64, and had its grand opening in November of '64. It was a highly controversial project that involved taking down and placing in storage the memorials from three sides of the Statehouse and cutting down many old trees, some of which had stood on the Statehouse grounds since the 1800s. They even trapped and relocated to other parks around the city the Statehouse squirrels that were so familiar and popular with downtown officer workers who spent their daily lunch hour on the Statehouse lawn. I'm still surprised the garage project ever got approved. Barry Goldwater's campaign appearance at Vet's Memorial was on September 30, 1964. The OSU homecoming parade on High Street - can you imagine tanks in the homecoming parade now? - had a float which mentioned Wisconsin as the opponent, and that game was played on October 24, 1964. OSU was ranked #1 at the time and won the game 28-3. Unfortunately, the rest of their season didn't go quite so well. I remember my dad taking me to see an OSU homecoming parade and sitting me on the wall in front of the old Ohio Stater Inn. It might have been this same '64 parade shown in the film, but I suspect the one we attended was in '63.

Enviro Geologist, thanks for your comment. Almost majored in geology at OSU myself, but ended up with a BA in History and a BS in Social Studies Ed instead. Even took a couple of classes from Dr. LaRocque. Did your father work at the Dale?I worked there part time as usher and busboy. Worked every New Year's Eve from 1960 to 1970. Always thought that was the best possible way to welcome the New Year: having fun AND making money. In all the years since, I have never enjoyed a New Year's Eve as much as I enjoyed those.

@TS-ev1bl

@@coast5663 Uh oh. This triggers one of my old C-bus semi-rants. They'd been talking about re-doing the 70/71 splits for 20 or 30 years but it kept being put off for various reasons, budget mostly, as the problems got worse and the price went up by leaps and bounds. It seriously needed a lot of work. I travel extensively and have lived all over the US, and C-bus is one of the few US cities of its size where the interstate freeways actually get narrower and have fewer lanes as they approach the center of the city where they must carry an increasing number of vehicles. The old (current) design funnels two major interstate freeways (70 and 71) down into single lane chokepoints, overlaps them, and forces those on 70 or 71 who want to continue on the same freeway to quickly choose/change lanes and switch places with each other in the course of about 1/4 mile, with additional, short merge area left and right entry and exit ramps. Some of those issues have been improved in recent construction phases but there is still much work to be done. I remember when the existing 70/71/315 interchange and the nearby Spring-Sandusky interchange was built in the '60s. I also had to commute through that area every day in the '80s, and it could be an adventure even back then. Not counting a few Band-Aid projects, the 70/71/315 interchange had not been substantially updated since it was built 50+ years ago, even though the volume of traffic has grown exponentially in that time. The so-called "innerbelt", particularly the 70/71 overlap segment, has been functionally obsolete for decades. It's going to be inconvenient for a while, but I'm glad to see it finally being addressed.

More specifically, it was the construction of the underground parking garage which is under the statehouse lawn on three sides and wraps around the statehouse's foundation. The statehouse was built in the1850s, and the underground garage was constructed in 1963 and '64.
