Great video! From Wikipedia: "Ten Sleep was an American Indian rest stop, so called because it was 10 days' travel, or “10 sleeps,” from Fort Laramie (southeast), Yellowstone National Park (west-northwest), and the Indian Agency on the Stillwater River in Montana (northwest)."

I've been there, back about '96. Great old town. I'd forgotten what places were "ten sleeps" apart😂 I saw all the Thermopolis, dinosaur exibits, and the surrounding towns looking to buy property all over west of the Bighorns. Unfortunately most is thousands of acres😂. Grandparents lived nearby before moving to Washington.

I grew up in the area. Ten Sleep came from pictographs in the area showing Ten Sleeps from that point until the Medicine Wheel further north in the Bighorn Mountains. The glyphs predate Ft Laramie and those other mentioned locations, by 100s of years. Local tribes said the glyphs predated them. (Lakota, Crow, and Shoshoni)

I went back one year to your video of Lovell Wy. When you came into town gas was 2.13. I first thought that was a real old video, but no that was only one year ago. A lot has changed in less than a year. It’s costing you a lot more to travel. Will leave It at that.

Hi Russ, yes that road you see on the other side of the highway is the old highway 16, you were asking how you get to this road, you passed the sign to the fish hatchery that is the old highway 16 (435), the big horn mountains area is a great area to spend some time on the on the mountains, we have spent time on both sides of power river pass. There is an outdoor chapel 💒 on theTensleep side of the big horn mountains and an lookout tower not far from the chapel, too. You can go behind the Measdoewlark Lark, is a very nice view, too. Also so much more on the big horn mountains. I love the big horn mountains.

Shortly after the new highway was built in the late fifties, they used to have sport car races up the old highway.

That was my backyard for over 35 yrs. Snowmobile and downhill ski at Meadowlark. 4wheel in the summer. After Tensleep you will come to my hometown of Worland. Now I'm stuck in the hell of Phoenix AZ. The fish hatchery road leads you up the on the other side of the canyon. It was paved at one time.

I was in Tensleep in the early 70s. Went hunting 40 miles east of Tensleep. Of the bars on the corner, one had pennies across the bar under a coat of poly. The town got its name from the Indians. It took them ten sleeps to cross the Bighorn mountains. There was a little knick knack store across the street from the penny bar called "Dirty Sallys". I bought my son a little t- shirt with the Dirty Sally name on it. Great memories from over 50 years ago.

Hello Russ😊😊😊, the route that your taking through those SPECTACULAR mountains and cliffs are a section of the Rockies called the Bighorn Mountains. Years ago my brother and I did a roundtrip road trip from RI to Seattle and we drove through Yellowstone and Grand Teton on the way back and it was ABSOLUTELY SPECTACULAR! Cody is a really cool town too. Definitely enjoyed this video👍👍👍👍.

Sweet 16 to Yellowstone! Drove that entire road two years ago - Ten Sleep is a proud 3-block town! We stayed at the RV Park there. We were going to stay at Meadowlark Lake campground but it was closing the day we stopped (mid Sept) so we drove on to Ten Sleep - then to Cody, Buffalo Bill State Park, then hit Yellowstone on Sept 19! Fantastic scenery.

My wife and I stayed at Ten Sleep back in 1993. The Indians would travel north to hunt Buffalo every year. This is where they camped on the 10th night. So it became known as Ten Sleep. Now you know.

18:26 Back in the 1970s there was a little mom and pop shack restaurant just off the left side of the road at that point. It only had about six or eight tables, and it was the only business around there. Whenever we would drive down US-16 my dad would always stop there to eat. The cool thing about it, in addition to having some the best home style fried chicken I have ever eaten, every table had a view out the window of the rock cliffs on all sides. I always looked forward to us stopping there. It looks like it's gone now. Either homes or cabins have replaced it.
