This is one of your best videos ever. 63 minutes of magic. The scenery along this line is magnificent. I'm sure the crews loves to work here. The trains won't break any speed records, but at least the guys can enjoy the beautiful surroundings. The trestles are really cool and the swing bridge action was a very nice bonus. Fantastic aerial footage again Dan, you should be proud of this masterpiece.

Reedsport native here. Thanks for making this fantastic video. You can see the shipworks in the background of the swingline bridge shots, which serves mostly fishing vessels. Also visible are the Discovery Center museum with its light blue pyramid rooftops, along with several warehouses that are dedicated to local industry or the lord of the rats as the case may be. Finally, on the bridge itself you can observe an eagle's nest along with the tenant, who seems displeased with the locomotion of his home.

Altough a very nice shot video (where would you be without a drone?), I did miss the sound of the train. The rattle on the track, the sounds of the engines and so on. With 3 bridges with long exposures, at least one could do without the background music and the real sounds of that day. (the steel bridge with the swingspan, great shots!). And I so missed a map of the line! A big shoutout to the CBRL of running such long trains!

Mathew is right drones don't even have the capability to record audio as it is but all you would hear would be propellers. This is a major reason I shoot ground video when I can because the sounds are for sure something that is being missed out on! I agree with you.

An excellent rail video. Having driven the entire coast of Oregon in 1966, it is a beautiful area indeed. Coos Bay with the sand dunes and all was impressive. This branch line was obviously expensive to build and maintain. No wonder SP spun it off to a short line operator. They still retained the traffic, without the maintainance expenses.

Go back and watch the trestles carefully. Many of them have bents (piers) that do not actually support the stringers. The supporting piles and bents were driven after the others and those have not been removed. Look carefully at the long trestle at the end; there are several bents with material on them to help prevent the spread of fire if one were to get started on the trestle. This prevents the total loss of the structure in the event of a trestle fire.

Thank you for another splendid video, Dan! It is great to see a GP30 still in revenue service in 2023. The individual trains that you caught in this video were interesting to watch as they passed through some amazing scenery. Watching the trains slowly crossing the various bridges on this line gave us a good opportunity to view the scenery. The sequence of the Umpqua River swing bridge opening and closing was fascinating to watch. I doubt that there is enough river traffic on the Umpqua River to require a full-time bridge tender. Is the bridge remotely controlled? Only two pleasure craft passed the swing bridge in the opening and closing of the bridge sequences. I would think that the two pleasure craft could have passed under the closed swing bridge. Was there a larger craft that passed the open swing bridge that you did not capture?

Thomas, at 54:34 and there after, it looks to be a barge, farther down the river from where the speed boat was coming. I'm sure that's what the bridge swung for. Nice relaxing video.
@davidmihevc3990
@davidmihevc3990 8 ай бұрын
Not sure how it is done these days, but back in later SP days the swing bridges were left open for river traffic and only closed to allow trains to cross. A bridge tender would line the bridge, then open it behind the train, then travel to the next bridge and do the same for all 3, Coos Bay, Reedsport and Cushman (east of Florence) . It was fairly easy to get back ahead of the trains as alot of the track was limited to 10 mph back then. I'm with Dan on the container port ever being a reality, it has been talked about for as long as I can remember. Would be great to see it happen though.
@thomasmackowiak
@thomasmackowiak 8 ай бұрын
@@davidmihevc39903990 Thank you for the information on how the bridges were controlled in the Southern Pacific days. The procedure that SP used sounds like the same procedure that the City of Chicago uses in the Spring and Fall of each year to get pleasure boats to and from Lake Michigan. In the Spring a bridge is opened on the south branch of the Chicago River to allow pleasure craft that need the bridges opened to get up the south branch of the Chicago River to the main branch of the river that goes out to Lake Michigan. The boats are all lined up and the bridge opens. The boats proceed to the next bridge where they must stop. After all the boats have passed the first open bridge, the bridge tender lowers the bridge. He then gets in his care and drives to the next bridge where all the boats are waiting for him to open that bridge. This hopscotch method continues until the boats can get to the lock that allows them to lock into Lake Michigan. The reverse process is done in the Fall to allow pleasure boats to go back down the Chicago River to the locations that take the boats out of the water and store them for the winter months. Woe to the drivers who get caught in a bridge lift on a Wednesday or Saturday.
@davidmihevc3990
@davidmihevc3990 8 ай бұрын
@thomasmackowiak Wow. That's pretty interesting, thanks for sharing. I forgot mention that the bridge tender would have to use a boat to get to the swing spans when the bridges were open to river traffic. I would imagine this was pretty dicey in inclimate weather.
@TheRailfanDan
@TheRailfanDan 8 ай бұрын
Thank you Thomas I'm glad you enjoyed! I would assume the bridge tender doesn't have to be there very often but I am not sure. Technically there would only be two train movements on average ever 24 hours at that bridge. I assume there was some larger water craft that would be passing through shortly since they rotated the bridge right after the light power went over it but I caught back up with the train after the rotation completed so didn't see.

Wow, great video sir! I grew up in Klamath Falls but also lived in Dunsmuir, CA since dad worked for SP in the 60’s into the 2000’s. When OC&E shut down in the early 90’s a lot of their lag cars were sold off and they looked exactly like the ones in your video. How do I know? Well, OC&E would often park a loaded log train that was a mile long usually and it would cut off Altamont Drive, Summers lane and Homedale drive for HOURS and I had to crawl underneath the cars with my bicycle to get to school in the morning. They did this because they had to get clearance from SP to cross over their lines to get to the mills the OC&E fed (Mainly Weyerhaeuser). Was sad to see them shut down, I often wandered around their yard and shop that was off of Altamont Drive and South 6th street.

The Engineers are treated to such spectacular scenery and vistas as your video shows, but I’m sure there are stresses, too, like any job. Do you know if there are speed restrictions even on straight sections of the line, and also curious why trains run typically in evenings-logistics or code restrictions? Cheers

It's pretty much all excepted track which is 10mph. Most of what I shot is where they run at night but they run in the Eugene and Coos Bay areas during the day.

Dan, do you know why the trestle is being replaced in Noti? I can only assume for heavier loads, but maybe there are structural issues with it?

Fantastic scenery, question, why do the trains go so slow? A track issue?
@TheRailfanDan
@TheRailfanDan 25 күн бұрын
Thanks! Yes it does have to do with the quality of the track. They're running on the lowest classification of track which limits them to 10mph.

Love the short (through?) truss over Poodle Creek. Does anyone know if these were ever done in wood?
@royreynolds108
@royreynolds108 7 ай бұрын
The through trusses at Poodle Creek and the 2 over the Suislaw River near MP 691 look to be one panel shorter than the other short through truss spans. By more or less standardizing on span designs, saves on bridge design and construction. I think he said the line was completed in 1916 by the SP. I have an idea that all of the steel spans are original to the line unless a particular span was replaced because of damage. From observation, the pile trestles have been redriven at least once and probably a couple of times. I doubt that the SP would have built any of the spans with wood in 1916. The Vaun Rd and Noti Creek trestle being replaced is probably because the repairs to the trestle would be as or more costly as the construction of a new bridge which can be done without really disrupting traffic until the cut-over. The new bridge will have modern loading, a big plus. This trestle is on a curve and superelevated plus it appears to me to need some steelwork done besides some wood replacement. Granted, it is hard to tell from a video; just my educated guess.

Interesting to see how their fleet is mostly GP38-2/3 with 6 leased and 3 owned. For all the talk of green interesting they didn't get GP23/33ECOs with 710 V8/12

This railroad isn't that old, its a subsidiary of the Port of Coos Bay. It's entire existence is because Central Oregon and Pacific abandoned the line back when they were owned by Rail America. They're probably still growing as a company and plan on buying more equipment, they're going to need bigger power if they want to haul anything intermodal, they may have to up the track speeds as well since the volume of traffic will be increasing!

My son is special needs and he loves trains 🚆🚃🚄🚅🚇🚈🚉🚊🚝🚞🚋🛤🚂 especially the ones in this video he thinks the Coos Bay Rail Link and/or department of transportation should run passenger trains on this line because it is just so scenic he is sure people would flock to ride trains through there. He also wonders if anyone has seen any Bigfoots 🦍🦧 in those areas because he believes in them and thinks that the wooded areas are suitable homes for them.

@@gretchenchadwick8343 As great as that would be I just don't think it's in the cards.
