Telč is a town in the Jihlava District within the Vysočina Region of the Czech Republic. Home to approximately 5,100 inhabitants, the town is renowned for its historic center, which is protected by law as an urban monument reservation and is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Telč is recognized for its Italian Renaissance architecture, including the chateau, formerly a Gothic castle, featuring intricately carved wood ceilings.
Local legend suggests that the town was founded in 1099; however, the earliest written record dates back to 1335. The Gothic castle, Gothic houses, and water fortifications were constructed in the mid-14th century. Development came to a halt during the Hussite Wars, and although the town was seized by the Hussites, the castle withstood the attack.
Telč gradually recovered, experiencing another period of prosperity under the rule of Zachariáš of Hradec. In the mid-16th century, he commissioned the transformation of the medieval castle into a Renaissance masterpiece and the reconstruction of the Gothic houses into Renaissance dwellings with arcades and decorated façades. During the Thirty Years' War, the town was briefly occupied by the Swedish army. The counter-reformation brought the Jesuits to Telč, who built the Church of the Name of Jesus in 1667 and established the Jesuit Latin Grammar School.
Throughout the 18th century, the town flourished due to the wealth of its residents, who funded the construction of statues, fountains, chapels, and a Marian column. In 1773, the rights of the Jesuit Order were revoked, and from 1785, Telč underwent Germanization. During the 19th century, industry developed, and the railway was constructed in 1898.
