I am glad I saw this movie movie young because the part about not selling someone out to buy your future struck a cord with me when I was little.
@marilynman
@marilynman 3 жыл бұрын
I also saw this movie when I was young, but I'm the type who naturally knows that you never sell your classmates. In my class they always where doing stuff, and the teachers for some reason always asked me what they did (I was the quiet one). I always said nothing, but in turn there was a particular snitch in the class who always spilled the beans, the traitor. And you know that in the movies there is the cliché about the quiet one always being bullied, I was never bullied. Perhaps because they knew what I was worth. Lol

There is always a lot of debate about the film, and it's generally summed up nicely by Pacino. "Tell or don't tell." The three who pulled the prank, along with Hoffman's character, don't deserve any sort of protection or loyalty from Charlie, and it would be perfectly understandable if he rolled on them given his treatment. A lot agree with that sentiment. But at the same time, I wouldn't like to be threatened by the Dean (or whatever his title is), who basically says "Give me what I want, or I'll crush your future." It's not ethical and, to me at least, a greater evil.

Pacino went so method for this role that he remained "blind" the entire time he was on set. The scene with him tripping over the trashcan was entirely accidental because of this, and ended up in the final film.

Scent of a Woman is a lot better imo. It also came first, so I may be biased because of that. The scene at the end of the movie is quite possibly the best acting Al Pacino has ever done. I think that scene alone makes this movie the better film. One of the greatest scenes in cinema history.

Yup. Honestly this may be a hot but not hot take at the same time LOL, but I think his Oscar win for this was more lifetime achievement award for screwing him over earlier. This isn't MOST people's top 5 maybe 7 for Al like you said: Dog Day Afternoon, Serpico, GF1, GF2, Scarface, And Justice For All, Glengarry Glen Ross, Heat, are all films I think people name well before this. If you asked non film enthusiasts but like just casual moviegoers what he won his Oscar for pretty much all these names will be said before S.O.A.W, personally I think Denzel deserved it more for Malcolm X that year. Actors rarely though receive it for their best work again with Denzel I think his least deserving nomination is the 1 he won for(Training Day) I wholeheartedly believe the same for Al, and it's no knock because actors like him and Denzel are always "deserving" they can roll out of bed and put on a performance like this.

And this one has an epic cast - Leonardo DiCaprio, Matt Damon, Jack Nicholson, Martin Sheen, Vera Ferminga, Mark Wahlberg. If not that, then there's Scorsese's recent crime saga The Irishman, starring Pacino, De Niro and Joe Pesci.

@TJ Daniels I haven't seen either of those movies, so I can't compare them. But Denzel definitely should've gotten an Oscar for a better movie than Training Day. Which no doubt was to make up for him being snubbed at the Oscars in earlier years. Pacino definitely deserves an Oscar, maybe not for this movie in particular but for his body of work. I liked this performance more than I liked him in the Godfather in all honesty. Though that might have more to do with the character actually being likeable compared to Michael from the Godfather. A movie that I was much more a fan of the book of.

His greatest performance though in the eyes of many critics and fans alike is as Sonny Wortzik in Dog Day Afternoon. It's worth noting that Pacino's Oscar win for this fantastic performance is part of a chain of debates among film enthusiasts about which roles deserved the best actor award. Many fans believe that he was robbed of at least one win for Serpico, Godfather 2, Dog Day Afternoon, & And Justice for All. Given that this is one of the more in-your-face performances of his career, it's been claimed that his award was more of an apology by the Academy, which in turn supposedly robbed Denzel Washington's portrayal of Malcolm X. History then repeats itself when Denzel wins best actor for Training Day, which was also seen as an apology award for a gimicky performance that robbed Russell Crowe of a 2nd consecutive win for A Beautiful Mind. Debates about which roles should've won are fine, but I think some people do go overboard by downright dismissing any of these performances as mere Oscar bait. They all fit the tones of their respective films.

"his award was more of an apology by the Academy" This is the same I feel about DiCaprio's win for The Revenant.

Al Pacino is my favorite actor of all time! I love every performance he's given in dramatic roles. I saw Scent of a Woman in high school and it really affected me. The human connections in this film are so well portrayed, you can feel every emotion. It's awesome that you're discovering these movies. May I strongly suggest And Justice For All, in which Pacino plays an idealistic young defense attorney who runs into disillusionment with the criminal justice system. He gives an amazing performance and there are some other great actors in it too. I really think you'll enjoy it and hope you can do a video on it. Some other Al Pacino favorites that I think you will like: Dog Day Afternoon (w/John Cazale who was Fredo from The Godfather), Donnie Brasco (w/Johnny Depp), Scarface (Oliver Stone script), Serpico (true story of police corruption) , Scarecrow (with Gene Hackman), Devil's Advocate (w/Keanu Reeves) and Carlito's Way (w/Sean Penn).

Loving your channel! It’s so refreshing to see movie commentary that is so positive and fun! I don’t know if you’re interested in newer movies but ‘Mid90s’ directed by Jonah Hill is something different and cool to watch!

Best movie i've ever seen! I think that even Chris O'Donnell deserved an Oscar for his performance! Thanks for the upload! Great reaction!👍👍

I remember a lot of people thought Denzel was robbed of the Oscar for Malcom X this year but when you think of the all time classic performances Al had already done at this point and not won an Oscar i was so pleased that he finally won. Zel got his in the end so it all worked out but honestly that's just background noise that detracts from his performance in this film. He was animated but also took it down well and the student council scene is still one of the most memorable scenes in cinema history and made everyone take note of a young Phillip Seymour Hoffman. I know Chris O Donnell is more proud of this than playing Robin in Batman

This was a great reaction...much respect! I never get tired of watching this, and Al Pacino I saw a documentary once about him..he has done so much amazing work, even before the Godfather movies. I wish I could find that again...this one is exquisite though and one of my favorites. I'd like to suggest "To Sir With Love" Thanks for the reaction, you're doing great

I love this movie. The Tango scene and the speech at the end are my two favorite scenes. I wish Charlie got a chance to dance with the girl too. She and him were both in the Disney 1993 Musketeers movie too. She played the Queen. He played D’Artagnan. Julie Delphy played his love interest, Constance.

Another story I hear is Pacino didn't attend the Oscar ceremony in 1972 for Godfather because he thought he deserved a nom in leading actor not supporting. He had more screen time than Brando I think and by the end he is the titular character and Vito corleone is dead. So rumour goes the academy snubs him for this protest in the future taking him 8 noms to win. I think only Peter O Toole was nominated more without winning.

Some recommendations for more Pacino are "And Justice for All", "Sea of Love", and "Glengarry Glenn Ross" which contains some of the greatest dialogue ever written and delivered by an epic, all time great cast. Also, a rec for another Chris O'Donnell film is "School Ties". Love this channel! Keep up the great work!

This is a remake of "Profumo di donna" from 1974, People who see the original say it's even better but good luck finding it with English subtitles, it's difficult. It's very highly regarded too.
