I’ve only been carving about two months now. And purchased this set(a bit less than you quoted). I’ve not used the scoops and have put them aside for now. The detail knife needed to be put on a stone and strapped before it gave me good cuts. The larger knife seemed to cut well from the start and I liked the way it made sweeping cuts. I did have a blemish about an inch from the hilt(about the same location you saw) which chipped abit needing some work to smooth out. I have only used the rough out blade just a little. It seems to cut okay. I quest I would rate them about a 6. But keep in mind I’m a novice at woodcarving. I’ve since, picked up on a flex cut detail knife which feel’s somewhat better and it came much sharper. I’m sure as I get more experience my opinions may change…

As I said I purchased them they were on sale for 68 something with my Prime discount they just will not sharpen properly and I don't know if you noticed maybe you're set was cherry-picked but my blades were not set straight inside of the handles as for the spoon tools I don't remember if they were but the chip knife the rough cut and the detail were all different two of them were placed in the same direction offset to the handle and then the other one was offset the opposite direction I did like the little sheaths that was a nice touch and I thought the same about the Box they have so much going right for them but then they fail at the main part

They are nowhere close to being on the same level as the steel used and the Beaver craft or the flex cut as I said I have purchased several different ones I'm not lucky enough to have a helvi knife and OCC is change manufacturers once again thought about buying a Drake I'm not sure I like the handles But after my personal experience with knives and none what they should be like I don't see how they can get to where they need to be but again I challenge you for your next video sharpen them the way that they should be but I don't think they'll do what you want and if not I believe they'll chip more than anything else I think that was the problem when I was sharpening them they were just randomly chipping kind of like the weird powdered blend knives that they currently have out for bushcrafting another things

I just ordered your book, I can’t wait to get it. The faces you carve in wood have a aesthetic quality that I find hauntingly beautiful, There's something truly special and captivating about your work.

Beavercraft have those hook knives in that design, just different handles. I just picked one up from Amazon UK last week and it's Wickedly Sharp. Thanks for the video 🤩 keep up with the great work 😍

So, I were to start making carving tools and sent a set to Alec, I would make sure every knife was very sharp and the very best I could produce! If this is a example of the best, I wonder what the average carver would get?

I don't have this knife set, but did get the first knife set they put out last year. The set I got is a 3 piece with a hook knife, a upswept whittling knife similar to the sloyd knives that often come in the cheap Amazon sets, and a detail knife. My set required a whole lot of stropping. I like the sloyd a lot for removing lots of stock. The detail is also very similar to the detail knives that come with the generic Amazon sets and is ground like the Beavercraft knives. I don't care for it to be honest. The handles are chunky and feel pretty good. Haven't used or sharpened the hook knife. This set also came with a strop/compound, a tool roll and 3 blanks of basswood. The straps on my tool roll are kinda cheap, stretchy material, and mine came with a tear in one of the straps out of the box. This set was $20 when it initially came out, which is why I got it. Was using up a gift card. It's now about $26. A pretty good set for a very low cost. Maybe a little better quality than those Amazon specials. I also have the $99 12 piece gouge gouge set which does well after a lot of initial sharpening. Sorry for the book length review! 😂

I don’t have the set but I do actually like my Schaaf gouges. Although they came suuuper dull. But I find the steel to be good, just needs some maintenance.

Generaly you don't use a chip crving knife like you would use a carving knife. Badger State is great!

I unfortunately do not have this set, do not think I've heard to much positivity about these tools. Alec, you mentioned ZAM compound ? What one would you be using 🤔 ?? I've had a look there is green and white, apparently billed as a jewellers roug ? Are you using it as a sharpening compound or just for polishing the blade 🤔. Hope you can help and advise. Many thanks, Les.

I can tell you already they handpicked that particular set for you I'm telling you from a fact of my purchase from Amazon I almost wondered if it was like a reject or a send back that's how bad it was and you cannot get that micro bevel out because of the way the actual metal is it does not take an edge at all I went through and re-profile the blade and found lots of defects and how the blade was ground in the first place you don't see it at first but I took it down as far as I could possibly take it even down to 8000 and it would not hold an edge

That small bevel is hard for me to get rid of. It will require hours of sharpening for the whole set to fix that.

This set wouldn't be good for beginners cause they wouldn't know how to get them sharp. The quality looks ok though. I still like flexcut better.

I can honestly say I bought Beavercraft first Sharpen them the way they were supposed to be sharpened in the first place I hands down say that Beavercraft by far is better than that will ever be I bought them because of the name happens to be the same name as My friend And he was like Well that was a disappointment sorry man And I laughed I've bought Flex cut I bought Beavercraft And Beavercraft is just as good as flex cut Once you get it nice and polished I like the handles better than Beavercraft than I do flex cut because of that waxy Finish on the handles But other than that The schaaf tools socks.... if I was to purchase that said I would never ever been as far along as I am now with carving I literally would have quit but I did buy their $12 vtool gouge set and it's not great but it is very doable

Better yet challenge of the day I challenge you to sharpen them to the proper profile profile and sharpen them the way that they should be I want to see if I'm an idiot and suck completely even though I have tons of knives and sharpened all of them to razor sharp and my wood carving tools are pretty much scalpel Sharp but I could not get them to sharpen up past their current sharpness it was like the metal wouldn't hold like you noticed the defect in the little blade when you start polishing them and sharpening them and reprofiling them you'll find more odd spots but I challenge you you have been officially challenged I double dog dare you you can't go past that LOL😂

I can let you know from the very get-go before I even watch this the tool set I got nails to say none of the blades were straight to the handles the blades are supposed to be manganese what manganese is not magnetic so I don't know what metal it is it doesn't sharpen correctly and there was a weird Burr in the metal of one of my blades what otherwise the Polish on the metal look great and the handles looked phenomenal as well too bad they're finishing their product was not as such and the metal blades are not ground correctly

You are a good carver but you have no business promoting carving tools. You have botched the Schaaf carving tools. Quit trying to talk soon fast. I couldn't even make out some of the names of tools you were trying to pronounce. What do I know, I've only been carving for 68 years now? I wish you well but stick to carving your pretty good at that!! Blessings you you!!
