Great vid, and well produced. I've lived in multiple countries and have travelled far and wide, and the UK does have a certain charm that you can't emulate elsewhere. Lots of people take it for granted, and it takes the perspective of living abroad to realise how special it is.

@@SchaeferFamilyAdventure Why only refer to England? Do you not intend to see the rest of the UK? - Scotland, Wales, Northern Ireland? Scotland in particular has some spectacular scenery in the Highlands. It would be a pity if, living in England, you didn't take the opportunity to visit other parts of the UK.

I couldn't visit my grandma because there was literally a river separating her village from mine, and it's the only way to get there

Yes! When it rains in the UK it RAINS and when it's sunny it's SUNNY. This is in part due to climate change, but also because it is North of the equator, plus it's a lot smaller than the USA so you'd expect most of the country to be affected by the same heavy rain. Especially Scotland, oh poor Scotland

Very, very true. Apologies for talking about myself but a complete stranger paid for my £23 Vets Bill for an item last Saturday as I expected the item to be cheaper and I was £9 short.By the time I scouted round in the car for more change she had paid the whole bill and left. Then the next day a neighbour 10 doors along who I have not spoken to for 29 years dismantled my old sofa for collection which took him 30 minutes and he would not accept a penny.The replacement sofa has been given to me by my neighbours 2 doors along who are moving and her Ex-Husband and another neighbour carried all the sofas from there house and set them up in mine.All in one week.....:)

Know just what you mean. On holiday in Orlando decided to walk to a Chinese take away about 10 minutes away. Had to walk back and go in car as it was too bloody dangerous to try and cross the road even when lights were in our favour. Have a great time over here and get around the country, go north. Remember good manners, patience and a sense of humour count.

When I flew back to England after 4 years in America, I had my eyes full of tears when I saw FIELDS from the plane over the West Country (Somerset, Devon, Wales etc). That is what the English countryside meant for me. I was terminally homesick.

Hmm, you haven't met many Americans. I don't shout at anyone, unless to warn them of danger. Although my mother who is "native" New Yorker could talk normally and it would be consider "shouting" among some..... Or our next door neighbor who "talks normally" we can hear in our yard about an 1 acre away..... Some Americans just talk loud. No way around that.

5 things I love about the UK: 1. Fruit actually tastes like fruit 2. Rain 3. The countryside 4. Whitby 5. Travel to other European countries do not cost an arm and a leg I'm grateful everyday that I was able to move here from the U.S.

I have lived in the UK since 1976. Loved it before I immigrated and love it even more now. Live in the countryside, but can be in the heart of London in an hour. Love having a life that gives me church bells and woodland walks, but fabulous theatre productions, great museums and art galleries almost on my doorstep. Like you, I love the British people, their friendliness and politeness; so much so that I married one.

British people are friendly? What part of the cocoon do u reside in? . I give u polite but not friendly. They very much are standoffish and keep to themselves. Smile at u with the hello, how are ya but have serious implicit biases. Social experiments even on KZfaq has shown that British people aren't nice. They just fake niceness

This what I like: Public parks everywhere in all cities; no ads on the motorway, just traffic signs/ information; most people live in houses and have their own gardens; millions of rivers/ streams and canals

As a native Englishman the one thing I really took for granted for a long time is the English countryside, it wasn't until I was older and started going on holidays to various other countries that I really started to appreciate it. The moment you arrive home after spending a couple of weeks in somewhere like Greece is amazing, to see all the lush green landscape of the UK again is like a balm for the soul. Welcome to the UK btw Schaefer family, I hope your life here is full of happiness, peace, love and prosperity.

There is nothing like the English countryside. Drove through the Yorkshire Dales to Kirby Lonsdale recently on a Summer day. It was beyond beautiful.

I think there’s a real possibility that people are so welcoming because you’re such a nice guy yourself? I agree, actually, that we are a welcoming people in England...but it definitely does help if the person we’re meeting for the first time is friendly and polite!

The reason for the "sidewalks" is that all our roads, apart from modern motorways and bypasses, grew from ancient tracks that have been there for centuries, some even from the stone age. They've always been for people on foot, and they've merely been widened and metalled for cars. But the ancient rights of way still exist. That's why jaywalking isn't a "thing" in the UK.

Yes, with rare exceptions pedestrians are assumed, in law, to have the right of way.

To a point, we have the historic expectation of being able to walk everywhere, but probably most of our housing estates were built in the era of the car with the pavements being down to regulations & planning. Old rural areas are where you're least likely to see roadside paths as there was less need when horses were the fastest thing on the roads. Northern industrial areas do tend to have more urban sprawl. Though greenbelt planning is pretty much ubiquitous at drawing a stop line round suburbs.

I have a fair few American friends, and I'd qualify that a bit to say that Brits and the kind of Americans who get passports and use them to travel tend to get on well. I've heard horror stories about... less open-minded Americans, shall we say, that most Brits assuredly wouldn't get on with. The reverse is probably also true of the kind of Brits who rarely travel outside the estate they were born on except for court appearances, and stays at Her Majesties' Pleasure, for instance. Every cultural barrel has a bottom to scrape. I think that last bit came out wrong...

Harry Chown it depends on which quadrant of the UK you live in. The more you go north, to more it changes from “warm” to “cold”, and he more west you go, the more you shift from “dry” to “wet”. London is considered warm and dry, Edinburgh is cold and dry. Glasgow is cold and wet, with over 200 rainy day in a year, and Wales is considered warm and wet, with its capital also getting more than 250 rainy days in the year.

When I visited Florida a few years ago I realised that every single toilet had a noticeable gap between the doors so I understand what you mean. Nice video and hope you're still enjoying it here!

It's really an eye-opener to hear that an appreciated factor is the ubiquity of sidewalks (or 'pavements' as we say in the UK) - something we'd never really think about. Re public restrooms for men - we do have urinals but you'll note that they flush themselves (via a timeswitch or IR sensor) - they don't have a flush lever. Many thanks for saying the natives are friendly - most of us really do try our best to be welcoming!!

I've been to the States a few times and the people far exceed the rest of the world for friendliness. I'm always pleasantly surprised when our American cousins comment on us being friendly.

I think Americans are very polite in the US, but they also try to never say anything offensive even if it's honest, I think Brazil where people encourage you to get involved if they see you're alone, Turkey where we were invited by strangers for tea, and Pakistan where poor market stall keepers would often give us things for free because we were visiters, are some of the most friendly places i've visited.

I feel it is easier for Americans to get on in the UK if they understand our shared history. Many Yanks look at the UK as an extension of a display at EPCOT, but if they understand the Blitz, or 'the few' or Dunkirk they're half way home. Being well versed in Blackadder doesn't hurt either . . .

@@johnsaunders2109, I don’t recall Britain discouraging our participation in THEIR European wars. We came into WWI when we’d had enough of Germany sinking American civilian shipping, and we entered WWII when we were bombed by Japan. Until these events happened THEY WERE YOUR WARS, AND NOT OURS. The Brits lost an entire generation in the trenches of France and, as I recall, they were pretty pleased when we entered WWI. Likewise, the Brits were essentially pinned down at home, and they would’ve been unable to liberate the European continent until we entered the war. Don’t you for a single bloody minute suggest we’re reluctant or recalcitrant. We just don’t like having to cross oceans to undo what your morons in Whitehall have created.

If you can, I recommend a visit to the Northumbrian coast; they have sandy beaches with castles (to keep out the Scots)

Great video from England. I'm from Wales so I can say if you love the countryside come here too. The Brecon Beacons and Snowdonia national parks are a must for any visitors, as is the Pembrokeshire Coast. In fact Wales has a coastal path going around the entire country, but you'd need to plan a few days to see it all. And then there's our castles. Wales is the land of castles.

Love the video. I would add to your love of the countryside something which you will grow to appreciate even more: the network of public footpaths. These are literally everywhere and allow you to roam for miles in beautiful countryside. It's something that I haven't found anywhere else and means that, not only can you look at the beautiful countryside, you can enjoy it also.

My favourite thing about the UK is that history is everywhere - Whether that be blue plaques on houses (to show someone famous lived there) or when you stumble upon a country Manor House that dates to the 1500s there is history everywhere. Plus the castles especially in the North and Scotland

Oh yes! And if it's the kind of thing you're really interested in, check out the National Trust and English Heritage memberships - they seem a little pricey upfront, but you only really need to visit about four sites a year for it to be worth it and some of the sites are absolutely amazing. (BTW you can obviously visit these sites without a membership, but the cost of admission can be a little eye-watering)

I've always wanted to visit and explore England, Wales, Ireland, Scotland... Any of the British Isles, really. Not sure if I'll ever get the chance, but at least there's always youtube and BBC mini series to give a small taste of it. Thanks for sharing your own experiences with the rest of us. 😃👍

My favourite place is the Isle of Wight it’s got a lovely feeling to it, a slower pace - everyone takes their time, the people are lovely, the food is yummy (generous portions too) & don’t have to travel so far to get to places; you can visit a town, beach & countryside all in one day with not a lot of travelling. Also it’s as beautiful in winter as it is in summer.

I visited the US many years ago. The one thing I remember the most is how HUGE America is. I can drive the full length of the UK in a day. In America you can drive all day and still be in the same state. And the cities are enormous. New York blew me away with its scale, a true metropolis. My favourite place was the deserts in Arizona and Nevada, amazing landscapes.

You are very welcome here, interesting your comments about the weather, I think the rainy weather stereotype was true in the past but British weather in my experience of over 30 years in England is that it's become drier and milder in recent years, but now when it rains it's much heavier than it used to be. Must be the changes to the climate!

I grew up near USAF bases in the east of England and I'd like to say that 99.9% of Americans are just lovely people and are equally well mannered as us. I'm so happy that are enjoying being part of our country. I think the best thing about any country is just being able to have a nice little chat with perfect strangers that you bump into. That's a very interesting video. It's good hear what people from other countries think of the UK in a fair and balanced way. The weather can be frustrating at times but remember we are an island in the Atlantic that just happens to be about 200 miles to far north! But I'm glad to see that you have taken the time to explore the beautiful countryside we have rather than assuming that London is the sum total of this country like some people do!

The NHS is a terribly wasteful system that is going to collapse or bankrupt the country. I'm not saying that nationalised healthcare is a bad idea, just that the way the UK runs it is terrible... i.e. it's too centralized - it's too big to be run efficiently that way. Remember, that the NHS was the first nationalised healthcare system in the world.. well, it's not the best way. Just look at Germany or France.. way more effiecient and therefore better quality. Also, you can't have a healthcare system that is free at the point of contact AND mass immigration at the same time. You have to pick one or the other.

Remember the founding Labour Government (at the time it was announced) was warned that the NHS would run out of money as technology and science improved. Aneurin Bevan's response? "That will be someone else's problem"!!! So it is and it is with us now. It has been the Tories who have kept it going. It IS true that the NHS is only safe in Tory hands.

Instead we work hard, do the very best we can, especially now during COVID, and most of our patients are very grateful. If you don't like the NHS then perhaps emigrate somewhere where instead of getting free healthcare from dedicated doctors and nurses you go to America where you'd have to pay almost $900 just for an ambulance, and that's before any treatment started. We risk our lives treating people during this pandemic, what are you doing except whine?

As an englishman I thought they were some pretty good choices. Where I grew up was just like the town you showed- houses right up to the edge of the town and then straight into countryside. I think it's the Gulf stream bringing the water up that keeps our climate so mild and warm even so far north

I’ve been to England maybe five or six times. One thing that strikes me is how gorgeous the country is. In Cumbria the entire area was so picturesque. We went to a hunting dog trial just north of Manchester and the people were having a great time. Nice folks

Mr Schaefer, my guess is that you currently reside in Eastbourne which is a nice town, in a part of your video your shot shows Hastings in the far distance, and just behind that is Hastings Country Park, which is a great place for a day visit. Get down to Cornwall in the summer, stunning cliff top walks and quaint fishing villages, beautiful, best weather in summer than most of the UK. To get a taste, look up Doc Martin (TV show -comedy/drama) set in Port Issac on the north Cornish coast. I`m an old(ish) English bloke, and i`ve travelled far and wide, but the natural charm and beauty is magical and second to none.

I definitely agree with number 3 - when I was holidaying in Florida in August, the public restrooms aren't private whatsoever. There are big gaps in the doors, and I felt like I couldn't concentrate on the toilet because I was constantly worrying about people seeing me through the cubical 😄

Welcome to England Matthew ! Thanks for this video , the UK isn't perfect and has problems like anywhere else , but it is a great country ( I am biased as an Englishman with some Scottish and Irish heritage ) . Regarding the weather , I think the climate is more moderate and stable than years ago . When I was young we would have 2 or 3 weeks worth of snow , now we are lucky or unlucky enough to have a few days . I think the Summers were hotter , but Spring is much warmer on average . We do have a high population per square mile , but we still have lost of beautiful countryside ( as does the USA as well ) .I am glad you are meeting people and community groups or your church are great places where you will be welcomed . We have people from many different countries helping grow the congregation at our church .
