“The first time the crew gets to receive feedback from the target audience: kids” See, there was their mistake. There was a six year gap between the movies. The kids who actually watched frozen were ready for a more complex story because they had done some growing up since then. Fun fact: the inflexibility problem has been an issue for decades at Disney. In the documentary 'Waking Sleeping Beauty', there was a moment where they talked about how Jeffrey Katzenberg had a meeting with the group of animators (this was around Beauty and the Beast's production) and asked how they were doing. One guy said that he didn't have any time to see his family. Another said he would have to sleep in the studio in order to make his deadlines. Katzenberg was supposedly 'moved to tears' and went "this is wrong, you have to have a life" and then did nothing to change it. Kinda explains a lot, actually.

The same scenario happened with Toy Story 2 but that turned into a masterpiece. IMO it depends on the people working on the movie. The producers of Frozen 2 were definitely getting in the way of each other. They needed someone like John Lasseter to rally the troops and push through. The employees at Disney Animation were paid to deliver a product by a certain date so it's not unreasonable for the executives to expect that the employees do their job properly.

Thing is, personally, I think most of this problem comes from the first movie. The first movie gave us the message that elsa's journey was done. She had accepted herself, symbolized by her control over her powers and acceptance of love in order to thaw. There was nothing hinted at about her wanting something more. ... And then frozen 2 tells us "oh, she actually doesn't feel comfortable, let's make her search for herself AGAIN". We don't know what she's truly looking for or why. Nothing was planted beforehand so the fifth element thing feels like an arsepull Long story short, it didn't need a sequel. So the sequel's story could only pull at nothing.

I think you’re right. The first movie definitely concluded elsa’s looking for herself. I do like playing with the Idea that she’s not ready to be queen, considering she was a complete shut in. Logically she shouldn’t be ready to be all the aspects of queen. I also like the Idea of just giving one more lore indication of where her powers come from. By framing it as a mysterious voice they had the chance to explore this angle. If elsa wasn’t so internally driven by it it could have absolutely been seen as a threat against airendell and elsa’s journey could have been to investigate the source. None of this 5th element stuff tho. Just 1 of a few other elements. In investigating and dealing with the threat elsa could be learning more and more about what it means to be queen to protect yourself and your people. She can use her powers against another spirit, accidentally harm it, and actually think about the nescecity of self defense. What if instead of the spirits being mad about the dam or the 5ths spirit leaving, say it was elsa who was ‘stolen’ not for power or whatever but because their parents fell in love, but as adults, and the actual voice is calling her back maliciously because it sees the power as stolen? We can go from movie 1 being elsa finding herself and accepting who she is, to movie 2 being elsa and anna together learning the war/peace responsibilities of the crown. That way we still get to a lot of the points they wanted to seem to hit.

"Adults liked it, but kids found it too vague." So what you're saying is, individuals that grew up watching Frozen liked it and thought it was a good sequel, but smaller kids that never had a connection to Frozen didn't know what was going on. So instead of going with the adults that would for sure spend money on a good sequel, they bet on the kids who MIGHT NOT watch it, and so made a film that felt like it didn't even belong in the same universe. GOT IT.
@chunchunmaya
@chunchunmaya Жыл бұрын
"Kids found it too confusing and vague, so the crew decided to go back and simplify everything." Back when Frozen came out in 2013, I was about 4 or 5 when I saw it, and I didn't even understand most of the movie. Maybe it's because I skipped most of the scenes, or because I was just paying attention to the visuals and the music and not to the dialogue, but rewatching it as a 13 year old, I realized that there were a bunch of things in the original movie that I didn't get when I was younger. I didn't understand what the trolls were doing when they were changing Anna's memories, or why Elsa was distanced and isolated from Anna. I didn't understand what happened when their parents died, so my Dad had to explain it afterwards. I know that everyone's saying this, but I'll say this again: They didn't need to go simplify and clarify things to make it easier for kids to understand. I didn't even understand the first Frozen movie when I was 5 years old. When they rewatch it when they're older, the things that went over their head when they were younger, they will understand later on. And this is the thing with a bunch of media and stories.

I took a 3D animation course (didn’t finish it is literally hell. You have to be nuts to work in this industry) and sadly deadlines and last minute crunches are VERY VERY VERY common. Like it’s in almost every movie. And I’m not just talking about fully animated. Any movie with cgi works their animators to the bone last minute. Too give you an idea of what it’s like I told my friends hat we were told by multiple animators that came to talk to our class and when I told them what work hours turned into in the last months all my friend told me is “but that’s illegal, they can’t make you do that” and she was right. But animators jobs like this don’t work like most jobs. You work contract jobs. It’s true they can’t MAKE you come in and work 20 hours, but this shot needs to be done buy Wednesday and you know they don’t HAVE to sign you back. You don’t get it done, you don’t have a job after this movie. Doesn’t even matter if you know this movie is going to suck. One of the animators I talked to worked on the dolittle remake. She said it sucked in the kindest way possible. This was maybe a month before it came out?? I’m sure not all jobs are the same, but from all the people in the industry I talked to it is most of them. If ya have any questions feel free to ask. I have a good amount of industry knowledge even if I’m not in it. c:

But Chapek was the worst Disney Parks Chairman of all time. He ruined the Disney Parks division just like Iger ruined the whole company because he's just like Iger. So he was completely unworthy of becoming Disney's newest CEO. And as soon as Iger officially retires, Chapek is going to pick up right where Iger left off and continue to run Disney to the ground. @@boyfriendkisser The difference being that Into the Unknown, while a decent song, is fairly vague in subject matter. You could put it in nearly any adventure movie. It's a song that gets you excited because you know something is about to happen. The lyrics of Let It Go are much more personal and specific to the character in question and acted as a turning point for her. Thematically it has much more in common with Show Yourself. It's the kind of song that gives a sympathetic look into the mind and heart of the character, which is why they rewrote her around it. It would have been fantastic as a villian song too because it would have made us understand where she was coming from and given the villain depth. Either way you go, it's completely tied to Elsa as a person.

My husband's takeaway from ten minutes of the Frozen documentary was that he would never want to get stuck behind Jennifer Lee at Starbucks. I have to agree. She seems like a nightmare to work with when the cameras are off. She even shot down one of the lower animator's ideas in the documentary (the one that recorded herself running in order to animate Elsa) and then immediately turned around and tried to claim the idea as her own. The responsibility falls back on her for not finalizing the story sooner and no delaying the release. The movie wasn't ready, plain and simple.

For Frozen II, Disney had six years between feature-length installments. It was announced in March 2015, effectively four and a half years. Typically Disney films take five years in production from conceptualization to finish, though Frozen already did a huge amount of heavy lifting for the sequel by establishing characters, setting, and various assets. Four and a half years is ample time to get a sequel out, yet it ended up a clustercuss. The failure was in the script. Place blame where blame is due.

@@NairAthul The Lopezes perhaps as they also did Coco, but between "Frozen Fever" and Frozen II Lee wrote the screenplay to A Wrinkle in Time (bigger bomb than Solo) and the book to Frozen the Musical (which only got nominated for awards by default and closed before Aladdin). Considering A Wrinkle in Time was based upon a book already adapted multiple times to live-action and Frozen the Musical was a stage adaptation for a movie Lee wrote, it really wasn't too time-consuming. Television writers push out more scripts in a year than Lee has written in her lifetime. Considering screenwriting is Lee's only specialty, it shows how weak of a link she really is.

Now I can't help but compare this to the first How to Train Your Dragon film, as it was suffering story problems pretty close to release date too, yet the outcome was so different. I haven't watched the Frozen 2 Documentary but I managed to track down the one made for httyd 1 so take this comparison with a grain of salt. Apparently, the directors were only brought onto the project 14 months before the release date. The story was very different at that point, Toothless looked nothing like his final design. They had to throw a lot of finished stuff away because it was just not working for the story, but unlike Frozen 2, they made sure to hammer the story out until everyone was satisfied with it. And that meant when they did their first test screening the audience loved it and was even defending stuff to be kept in the movie (yes it was the foot). Don't get me wrong, I think neither the Frozen 2 nor the httyd crew should have been rushed, as this industry already has a huge problem with unpaid overtime. But it does make me appreciate httyd all the more since even with the time crunch the crew took the time to listen to criticism and make the story the best it could be. The httyd documentary is up on youtube btw, I really recommend watching it if you like httyd. They did it in a vlog style, so they managed to capture the moments of how some crucial story bits were born during the crew's brainstorming.

I do recall the people behind HTTYD wanted to have a more faithful adaption of the books (Toothless being the size of a Terrible Terror, keeping the character designs, etc), but it just wasn’t working out. Having read the books and seeing the movie, I honestly think the franchise benefitted from that decision. I’m also glad Cressida Cowell (at least publicly) didn’t rag on DW for it and stuck around production. Her world is amazing, and so is the movie team’s. I do remember reading that test screeners didn’t like how Toothless wasn’t there when Hiccup woke up after the fight with the Red Death, as it came across more of a “boy and his dog” story. So they added Toothless in and it just MADE the ending, especially the shot of them walking out together. If the full documentary is out, I should try and watch it. I’ve wanted to know about “Rise of the Guardians” and “The Croods” (which had quite a few issues in its own production) as well, so maybe they’re also on the internet somewhere.

Like it was super popular when it came out but now I literally know no one who still plays it. Like he said in the video, a bad game is bad forever. Remember pokemon go? It was the most popular thing when it released, there were literal businesses that had a team sign painted on the side of their store. After the hype peak its only played by people who are dedicated and beyond that no one speaks of it. So yes it was perfect timing but they still released a half baked game most likely because they had no pressure on their employees. WHICH ISN'T A BAD THING, but if you don't put expectations a delayed game will look just like a rushed game but with less glitches. Just like no man's sky and Pokémon go animal crossing has to release updates to keep the game interesting when cityfolk had the entire game on one disk at launch

I think you missed the point. They probably had other big projects to juggle and only had 8 months to finish EVERYTHING until they release the movie. And let me tell you, animating a feature film is NOT easy. There's storyboarding, making the concept art, compositing, rigging the 3d models, writing the sript, composing the songs and soundtrack, voicing the characters among other things. Ultimately, it's Disney's fault for rushing the animators and as you can clearly see with a bunch of other movies (*cough* the good dinosaur *cough*), it didn't turn out great.

Six years later with no ideas at all just screams to me that making a sequel is a *bad idea.* This is a rule that authors should follow for their books, and money-hungry executives for their movies. If it doesn't need a sequel because everything that needed to be is wrapped up in the first volume, *don't give it one.* It very, very rarely ends well.

The fuq? And then Anna goes and looks for her sister, forgives her and then goes through all Elsa's narcissistic bullshit in the 2nd movie... *she* should have been the 2nd Disney Queen (Kida is the 1st, fight me Disney), not Elsa. And even if they don't want to give her powers cause of mix messaging, give her something else something good. I propose maybe have Anna pick up martial skills. After the first movie have her be upset by how physically useless and naive she was. So she trained with the knights to fight. This includes hand to hand combat, sword fighting, and bows and arrows. Let her also build great perceptive skills, so that if anything goes down she will be ready, and can assess the next course of action accurately. From training with the soldiers she shares in the conradery and becomes over protective of "her" people. This could create some conflict with the old crew about her hyper vigilence being unnecessary. Anna could be the foil to Elsa's complete recklessness.

Baconninja Eisner stated this in a memo back in 1981 when he was still working at Paramount, so when he moved on to Disney and brought his quick, easy, marketable ideology with him, much of the staff suffered. His ongoing struggle with Ron Clements and John Musker over The Little Mermaid and Treasure Planet is probably the best example of how dismissive he was towards creativity within the company.

@@projectanimation7730 It's not a coincidence that it was under Eisner that Disney began to produce a lot of direct-to-home sequels. Bob Iger's philosophy is to go big, create cash-grabs that don't feel cheap. That way you can make easy, reliable money while not degrading the Disney brand. That's why the direct-to-video sequels are out and now we get live action remakes.

I'm still in college right now (working on my thesis and internship)~ I'm recovering from my burnout, though I wanna take a break after I graduate to have fun more making the kind of arts I want to make. If you want to enter animation, I'd say go ahead as long as you are passionate about it. Honestly, no matter what major you choose there will be obstacles to bring you down anyways. I'm still pushing through college cus even though I got burnouts, I still enjoy making art and animation. I'd be lying if I say college didn't help me improve. I'm not as bright as my friends but the fact that I still enjoy doing art is enough for me to hold on... What happens during and after college is all up to you. Art is never an easy path honestly... but if its the road you choose then no one can stop you. Even if you ended up not taking animation major, it doesn't mean you can't learn about it on your own~ Just, think about it carefully and do what you think you should do. I think Toniko Pantoja gave an explanation about choosing animation as ur career path. Maybe you can check it out if you haven't ! (Their channel give many animation tips too~)

As soon as the end credits started rolling for the last movie, me and my friends bawled our eyes out, while none of the little children in the theatre did anything (since they didn't have as much sentimental value for the production). It was definitely because as we grew up, the characters grew up with us! Having it end in such a beautiful way really touched us, I'm just sad that Frozen didn't get the same treatment! Like this review describes, if you love frozen 2 I think this will help you understand why it was so great, and if you hated frozen 2 it provides a certain amount of insight as to why it was so bad (though I wish the documentary started earlier, it begins when they're animating which I assume is several months after the story is written).

I was pretty disappointed though- I felt like all the characters were really different from the first movie and the story had nothing to do with the setting, magic system, or character development from the original. But if you liked it, you can see just how hard everyone worked to refine the story and put together the beautiful animation.

Way back in the day I bought the DVD for The Emperor's New Groove. It came with a whole bunch of behind-the-scenes footage and commentary. What I learned from it was that in the late 90's, Disney animation was lost and had no idea how to make an animated movie anymore. Seriously, they started with a simple story and when they finished the end result was something that didn't even resemble the original concept. Somehow the movie was entertaining and fun but it made no sense and was a box office bomb. They were just flying by the seat of their pants, making stuff up as they went. I think the only thing that saved that movie was the amazing comedic timing. It is a funny movie.
