I love how Nolan isn’t tied down to a specific genre or style. He can spend two decades making some of the best action sequences in cinematic history and then suddenly make a movie comprised almost entirely of people talking in rooms just because he feels like it.
@jp3813
@jp3813 Ай бұрын
Well, he does have an identifiable style. He loves realism and non-linear storytelling. And there are many genres he has yet to dive into. I think the most versatile popular director is Steven Spielberg: Duel, Jaws, Close Encounters, Indiana Jones, ET, The Color Purple, Hook, Jurassic Park, Schindler's List, Saving Private Ryan, Minority Report, etc...
@TheSchaef47
@TheSchaef47 21 күн бұрын
@@jp3813this is another version of Schaff's argument that favorite and best can be two different things. Spielberg is easily the most successful director of his generation, but Nolan is somewhere in my shirt just of favorites. Denis Villeneuve quickly climbed into that tier with Arrival, Blade Runner and Dune. James Cameron and Ron Howard are probably somewhere on that list also. And then there's a whole pile that I greatly respect even when they're not Favorite-favorites: Scorsese, Cuaron, Paul THOMAS (not W.S.) Anderson, Fincher, del Toro, Hitchcock, Antoine Fuqua, guys like that.
@TheSchaef47
@TheSchaef47 21 күн бұрын
He's run a pretty large gamut over a rather small collection of films. He's done a detective story (two if you count Memento), superhero movies (which also kind of cross styles), sci Fi, space opera, a war movie, a spy movie, an historical drama, and whatever you call The Prestige, a mystery thriller, I guess.
@jp3813
@jp3813 21 күн бұрын
@@TheSchaef47 Everyone has their favorites and opinion of who's the best. But I was referring to versatility. For example, I've yet to see Nolan make a movie for kids. Or perhaps a musical. Though he has plenty of time to explore.

The thing about The Prestige is that the first watch will blow you away when you learn the twist, but the second watch will blow you away *because* you know the twist. There's so much packed into that film that you find something new every time you watch it, but for the first watch you don't actually need to pick up on any of it to enjoy the story and that's the craziest part to me.

The first time I saw Interstellar was (unfortunately) not in a theater, but on a 4K disc at home. I wasn't able to get the full cinema experience, but I did have a cheap 5.1 surround system and the audio on that disc blew me away. I could put my hand in front of one of the rear speakers and that thing felt like an air conditioner with how much sound it had pumping through it. My dad came home from work while I was watching it, and came up to my room to see what all the noise was. He ended up getting so engrossed in the movie that he just stood there in the doorway and watched the last 45 mins or so with me, without having seen the rest of it. It's truly a great film and I gotta give it another watch soon.

I remember watching memento for the first time w/ a big group of friends, a lot of them wanted a horror movie but someone suggested this and the majority won. All the reveals and twists were so good, there were gasps and theories popping in left and right every fade out but we're all immediately shushed when the movie came back; the ending left us more shaken than any horror movie we could've picked, watching memento for the first time is truly an experience.

All valid film criticism aside, the bomb in the dark knight rises would not cause a deadly amount of radiation to the city for two big reasons, 1- it’s said to be a 1megaton nuke and anything over 700 kilotons blasts most of the radiation into the upper atmosphere 2-It’s a fusion based bomb which hypothetically would have less than percent of the radiation caused by a fisson bomb aka every nuclear bomb in real life

Ok so the reason The Dark Knight Rises feels so underwhelming is because originally Joker was going to have a massive role in it. Obviously after Heath Ledger’s death that plan was scrapped. Nolan had pretty much no passion for making a third film but was forced by the studio
@ReichLife

Is there any meaningful proof of such claims? Information of the time was that there was no third movie seriously planned, and ending of Dark Knight rather reinforces that when compared with B.Begins with obvious Joker cliffhanger.

@@ReichLife Yeah, it was my understanding WB kinda strong-armed Nolan into making Rises via his contract and so he kinda rushed Rises out hence it not being up to snuff with his other works. Tenet has no such excuse.
@ReichLife

@@CouchSpud91 Same feeling here. While Ledger death more or less impacted Nolan's approach towards third movie, overall picture showcases there never actual desire to make one, with only contract and/or promises for funding of other projects which were to follow TDKR actually made Nolan direct third movie. And yeah, while I consider Nolan to be easily one of the best directors of our times, he is hardly perfect. Didn't even bother with Tenet since it didn't sound appealing to me, all while Dunkirk or Oppenheimer while great movies, painfully suffer from Nolan's stubborn obsession of avoiding CGI.

This video began with us having many similar takes (except with flipped opinions on rises vs begins) but the ending diverged quite a lot. Here's my list: 1. The Prestige 2. Interstellar 3. Oppenheimer 4. The Dark Knight 5. Memento 6. Inception 7. The Dark Knight Rises 8. Insomnia 9. Following 10. Tenet 11. Batman Begins 12. Dunkirk You mentioned in your video that you'd only seen The Prestige the one time for when you made this video, and i swear to you - you absolutely must watch it again. Every single time i watch it again i just get sooo blown away, its incredible. The best part is watching it with new people who havent seen it before, and talking about it afterwards. I will die on the hill that The Prestige is Nolan's best film, its just SO good and expertly crafted and i eat it up every time

The movie playing in reverse order does such a good job at putting us in Leonard's shoes and helps us understand his short term memory loss. We're forced to experience his condition every time a new scene begins, because we have no idea what happened just happened before.

@@cobiepal Nah, Trinity Test was horrible in Oppenheimer, or at least explosion itself. Wonderful built up, completely ruined by ludicrously underwhelming explosion. Compare it with Indiana Jones 4, Godzilla Minus One, etc. Those were nuclear detonations. In Oppenheimer? It blatantly looked like classic Hollywood fuel barrels going off hundred meters away rather than a nuke few kilometers away. Same problem with Dunkirk, where great and tense atmosphere is severely when you you think for a second and realize how desolate said supposed massive evacutation is. Again, compare with others movie, like Atonement which also featured Dunkirk event and there scale was far more on point. Or Stukas. Sound and tension wise they are perfect in Nolan movie. But then you blatantly see those are blatantly 1/10 the size of actual thing when contrasted with environment around them. This is what so bizarre about Nolan obsession. People dislike CGI when it clearly puts you out of experience. Nolan obsession about doing practicals is doing literally the same thing.
