Not very good results, with numerous color morphing, especially when faces enter or leave the foreground where shadows are expected, orange color predominates.
The original scene in black and white can be seen here:

Schindler was pulling strings earlier to get his workers classified as "essential" because otherwise they could be deported "east" or even casually murdered on the spot. Because Stern forgot his card he could not show exemption, so they put him on the train. But with Covid now, that phrase "essential worker" does pack a punch.

12,000 Jews were deported from Krakow during 1942, the year before it's Podgorze ghetto was cleared. Unlike those deported in the final clearance, these earlier transports were routed to the Belzec extermination centre. None survived.
@Aethelhald
@Aethelhald 3 жыл бұрын
Considering this is taking place in 1942 or 1943, they're all going to Belzec, Sobibor or Treblinka. That's 100% guaranteed death. A few exceptionally "lucky" ones may be taken off the train en-route to one of those three camps - it sometimes happened that a train would make a stop and younger Jews would be exchanged for older ones, then it continues along its way. The young ones who are taken off will be put to work, but ultimately their fate is the same, it just gets delayed a while.
@SanCristobal63
@SanCristobal63 3 жыл бұрын
@@Aethelhald Yep Damian, perfectly true. Because the film concerns itself with Schindler and those he saves, two of the three most significant stories of Krakow Jewry are omitted. The first of these two omissions being Hans Frank's explusion of almost three quarters of the city's Jews prior to the existence of the ghetto south of the river. The second being the two Aktions and subsequent deportations in 1942. Over 5,000 were routed from there to Belzec in the first week of June followed by another 7,000 in the last week of October. As we see in the clip above, the 1942 deportations are merely hinted at but there is another item. There is a scene where Chaja Dresner hides beneath a stairwell during Goth's 1943 ghetto clearance. Her daughter Danka comes running down the stairs to rejoin her. In real life, Dresner, did indeed hide beneath a stairwell but she did so during one of the two Aktions the year before.

I am surprised that nobody mentioned the last sentence spoken by Schindler at the end of the scene. He said "where would I be ?" but we all thought about Sterns fate in the concentration camp if he would've departed on the train. Makes you see that at this point Oskar wasn't yet touched by the horrors of the Holocaust, as he thought about his own company, his own money. He simply needed Stern at that point and indeed, Stern was essential for him. I was in shock when I saw the film at a proper age when I understood all the events, situations, conversation. "Where would I be" asks Schindler while couple of seconds prior to that his accountant apologized for being taken to a concentration camp against his will. Terrible.

alexandru, you are dead right, and i am sure that spielberg put that in on purpose, schindler didnt really understand the impact he had on these peoples lives until the point that he handed over his watch to "buy" the two parents, of course he wold have known about the deporting, like everyone else would have done, but no one really kne until 1944 or 45 that it was mass extermination. so yes, a poignant moment when the focus is on "where wold he have been" if he was 5 mins late

Well, I think a person's character doesn't really change, we all are who we are, at our core. I think Schindler, as he's in portrayed in the movie, was attached to the people he came in contact with individually, and had an instinctive impulse to help. However, at least in the beginning, he was rationalising this as being business related only. To others, but possibly to himself as well. Whatever he aspired to become, he did not see himself as a philanthropist.

At first he did not take it seriously. He is SS, Schindler is a civilian, even if a Nazi Party member. There is a battle of influence going on - Schindler himself doesn't take the civilian clerk Tauber seriously and so the SS NCO is (at first) the one who determines everything. But the threat to get them both transferred to the front suggests Schindler has "pull", and that does worry the NCO.

Why would anyone try to colorize this?! It is not an old movie, it was intentionally made in black-and-white in the 90s! It would also change the impact completely of the little girl who stands out in color in one scene, symbolizing hope, the only color in the movie.

AI certainly gets confused about shifting colors. There are also severe mistakes in Kunder's uniform as it isn't Feldgrau or parade SS-uniform black either. Indeed a bad result, though it does have same Technicolor-luminescent shade in it.

in the mid 80s i remember studios making first attempts at colorizing old B&W movies but they stopped and when back to B&W as the technology was not good at the time and it looked similar to this and did not do the movies justice....

Where do I begin? For the umpteenth time, black & white is not something less than or inferior to color, but is specifically different from color, and has qualities and effects that color does not. This is markedly true in the present case. Among other things, black & white has a stark, somber aspect, which better serves certain settings and subject matter, such as the unrelentingly somber Schindler’s List. It forgoes color’s brightness and cheer for the foundational grimness of the concentration camp. This provides much of the film’s sobering power, telling an emotional truth more valuable than the literalness of color. In contrast, the colorized segment shown here seems shorn of that dark dimension and comes off as oddly mellow (this would be true even had the color not been so appallingly bad). A fully colorized version would be anemic by comparison. Some on this thread believe that Spielberg, for economic reasons, shot the film in cheaper color stock, but then changed it to black & white in post production. Wrong. It was shot by cinematographer Janusz Kaminski in black and white to give the film the qualities discussed above, and to impart a documentary quality that Spielberg wanted. In any case, the choice of black and white was deliberate and ultimately correct. And, to the out - of - his - depth poster below who wonders what Spielberg was thinking when he shot in black and white, perhaps you have your answer.

Affecting the look the director was aiming for was probably more challenging in B&W too. This comparison with technicolor reflecting early days colour film isn't really appropriate, Goebbels treasured Agfacolor Neu perhaps. (Germans in mid war would be unlikely to access film stocks from the US)

I don't have a 4K version of Schindler's list and it's more effort than its worth to colorize a HD version for two reasons. 1, higher quality video takes more time to convert, and at the time the colorizer existed, the GPU I had wasn't exactly top of the line. 2, the lower quality adds to the effect because then the obvious color inference mistakes don't stand out as much as if it was in HD, which gives it a slightly more authentic to the period feel, for whatever that's worth.
