3/7/2008. The Army is investing 40 billion dollars over the next five years to build and refurbish facilities world wide. This benefits the entire Army family. Mary Cochran reports how the upgrades effect single Soldier living at Schofield Barracks in Hawaii.

I was stationed there from 97-00 (F quad), and I the old platoon bays were divided into two man rooms then. But the work left something to be desired. Whoever divided up the bays had simply erected eight-foot walls inside the bays with their original twelve-foot ceiling heights, and covered it over with those drop in ceiling tiles you find in any office building today. And to make sure you couldn't just climb over the wall into your neighbor's room to steal his stuff, so help me they had strung concertina wire along the tops of the divider walls. This four-foot gap between the new ceilings and the original made a wonderful space for rats and mice to move from room to room though -- the concertina wire didn't bother them any. I remember one day, sitting at my computer -- these were the days of AOL, dial-up modems, and "you've got mail" -- and I saw a mouse make several attempts to crawl down the phone line I had strung up over that drop-in ceiling and run down to my computer. It would get halfway down the line, notice I was watching it, and turn and crawl back up the wire. Several minutes later, it tried again; several minutes later, again; several minutes later, again. I decided to reroute the phone line UNDER the ceiling after that. It's interesting to see they've invested in a better, more professional upgrade to the living conditions since I was a soldier there. Kitchens and private bathrooms were a luxury we did not have in my time at F quad. No kitchens, and common latrines. I got athlete's foot and toenail fungus in those damned common latrine showers too, despite scrupulous use of shower shoes. I look back fondly on my army time, but I don't miss living in those barracks one bit. Glad to hear things are better there now, for the sake of the soldiers who are there today.

We had thieves actually climb over the 8-foot walls, push back the ceiling tiles and drop into the room next door multiple times.

I was stationed at Schofield Barracks in 1974 and 1975 and they were renovating the barracks from an open bay area for roughly 40 soldiers with dividers to a 2- and 4-man rooms design then. There was still one large bathroom with showers. We had a table and chairs plus sofas in the new rooms when we moved from B Quad to D quad.

I was in C-Quad (Bldg 357) from JUL 92 to APR 95 in B-4/22. I kind of miss the old 4-man rooms and latrines across the lanai. In the other 14 years I was in I never had better buddies than I made there.

Two soldiers share a kitchen and a bathroom?? Wtf? Not in 1986. 4 soldiers shared one room. The bathroom was common to the floor and a mess hall downstairs

Only half the quads got the complete upgrade. Some soldiers are 3 and 4 to a room with no kitchenette or private latrine. It would be nice to have one of those suites though.

Hey Pudgy Dog! I thought our barracks were just fine., kind of like civilian college dorms. But two blocks over, man, the 25th was not living in comfort. No one would say the 25th doesn't deserve comfortable barracks... when they ARE on base. God bless them. Everytime I see the Army getting into a skirmish, I pray, but double it for our cuzins in the 25th. Spec. Mark Newman, Schofield Barracks 1986 to 1988 4th Platoon Bravo Co. 732nd of the 703rd Intel. (now called something like the 500th...)

Stationed here now in 2021, 12 years after this remodel and my room is crawling with roaches, mold on the wall when I moved in, and in my experience the 1 +1 accommodating has led to a lot more isolation and brought a lot more drama. I guess soldiers living in these quads will always have something to complain about.

I hate to say it I would rather have it like these guys and have a suite with my own room and a kitchen...do they get their own room?.....if so I can see these old barracks not holding too many troops.....it is so funny this shows my old unit in E Quad at 0:10...HHC 1/19th.....I was in a 3 man for 1 year and then I went to a 2 man room....84-85...I still liked the way we lived common latrine and GI party every Friday to strip and wax the hallway....from what i understand a lot of these Gen Z guys do not go to the chow hall....they have measured oats/powdered drinks for breakfast....Fuck that shit!!!....eggs to order with grits and bacon and gravy......

All this bellyache. Should have lived in them when they were true barracks, with big living bays, with double bunk racks. I thought the were great myself. Should try living in Vietnam with nothing but sandbag dugouts to live in for 13 months. The Army has gotten too soft.
