My new bus, a BB RE 84 psgr, will be arriving soon. I’d like to do a review including perspectives a driver(me) a supervisor’s , and a mechanics. I think the different perspectives will be interesting as well as the overall opinions of the vehicle itself.

Interesting. This entire thing should be part of a CDL school's training, especially the tight quarters maneuvers. That setup, with the gates, is better than just having cones.

Offset alley is a great exercise to practice tight spaces…and I agree the gates make this event far more challenging than just cones.

Hi. I was wondering. Do you have any videos on a school bus pulling into a line of buses in between a couple buses at a student pick up lane without backing up. Only pulling in. Tail swing makes me nervous of the bus behind me.

Hello, Melody Thank you for the comment and request. Currently, I do not have any training videos about pulling into a student pick up lane. Could you give me a bit more information about what you are looking for. When you are lining up in the afternoon to pick the students up? If an individual bus is running late, is it possible to put that bus at the end of the line up, just for a day? Perhaps the busses could leave in the order they are to be in before arriving at the student pick up lane. This could help to alleviate pulling into a student pickup lane without pulling in between busses and the need to back up.

@@SchoolBusSass unfortunately we arrive at different times due to going to other schools first. Then we all end up at the high school. Sometimes the band truck is there and I have to pull in front of it and get behind the last bus. Tons of students there at the time. Middle school and high school age. Can’t back up or back into the space. It’s very difficult. I radio to see if other buses can pull up but it’s not much help. There is room for me but I end up not quite straight or far away from the curb. It’s just not part of what we learn driving bus. I’m new. Second year in.

Can the drivers who arrive first, pull up directly behind one another? It seems like that would be the easiest and safest fix. I understand arriving at different times. We arrive at our HS At different times as well and many busses do not arrive until after the kids have been released for the day. The way we avoid line up issues is by not having a particular order for busses at the HS. We come in four rows wide and probably 10 in each row we fill in right to left and exit right to left. We file in and out with no bus having an assigned location. Your position may vary slightly day by day, but the kids are old enough to figure out how to locate their bus. Most busses generally end up in a similar location on a daily basis. I will try to get a video out demonstrating the process. How many busses are in your fleet? Are you filing in, end to end or at an angle with the nose of the bus facing the school building?

@@SchoolBusSass line up end to end all at the same curb 8 buses in line. All in same direction. But sometimes I arrive and I have to pull in front of another bus that hasn’t moved up or the band truck is there clear at the back of the line and that’s the spot I have to take. I fear of swinging my tail into the front of the band truck. I guess I’ll just do my best. But it’s not something you practice for test. Although I feel I should be able to do it fine. But it’s a crazy moment with all the students outside and inside my bus.

I will see what I can do to simulate the scenario and try to give a few tips. Sometimes it’s difficult to visualize, but I think I understand the situation and the challenges.

These are not the driving skills used at test sites to obtain your CDL. The skills presented in the video, are used for a school bus driving competition. The skills used in State exams are Straight line backing, offset parking, parallel parking, and an alley dock maneuver. I believe most states require three of the four listed above. If you would like, I have each skill set as a separate video including tips to assist you through the process. My Chanel is called, Therese Mileti. This is a driving competition that takes place yearly. It is optional to participate. I think it’s a fabulous team building exercise, and I learn something each time I participate.

Seat licking is not an event in the roadeo. I would advise against both seat licking and window licking.

I was out for groceries and I thought I saw a school bus design without the warning lights above. I will have to put my dash camera up and see if I can catch some proof and confirmation. I very seriously hope I am wrong as that could result in more fines because of a lack of warning and it would also put our children in very serious danger both of which are 100% unacceptable!! I don't even like minivans used as school busses because they lack the proper warning lights and only have small yellow sign. I do not want to see anyones' children harmed or killed because of insufficient warning of a bus stopping. I also don't want to hear news of it or worse witness it myself!! As I said, I will have to see some more and maybe get a couple dash cam clips of them as they go by in the oncoming lane. This way I can confirm that it is what I saw. If I saw what I thought I did. the traffic lawyers would get a lot of new business to contest tickets. They have cameras on them now to catch anyone who does run the stop sign and could send out tickets or even take other actions. I am concerned about the safety of the children more than unfair tickets and things like that but still I have no tolerance at all for unfair tickets when there was not proper warning. I am also not afraid to make it known that the busses lack the lights if I find that they do. Just would have to raise the issue of safety and the parents and everyone else *WILL* all help fight it!!

Hi Charles, If the bus is used in a non school setting, like a church bus, no lights would be used. They are typically removed, if that is the case. Lights should always be activated on a public school bus, for both loading and unloading of students. Your concern is appreciated. We all need to do our part to keep all of our kiddos safe.
