I have been preaching about counting the mirrors for years. Glad you mentioned that its not about counting the mirrors but looking and checking each mirror slowly. So glad you mentioned this. Proud of you. If student drivers review this they will pass their cross over part. Good video.

We are told not to use hand signals because other drivers may think we are signaling them to go. We just nod our heads to tell children to cross.

Thank you for your comment! There is only one hand signal we use in the state of Ohio. The hand signal we use cannot be misconstrued by other motorists. We use the straight up and down motion with our students, any other hand motion could be viewed by other motorists as an invitation to pass our lights. We do, however, want to convey to our children that it is safe to cross the street, so the up to down hand signal works best...never waving across, or moving your arm right to left. Nodding could be an indicator to a motorist as well...as in nodding that it is safe for them to continue on...up and down, is not a forwarding motion.

There is an alternative to my bus stop so I do not have to cross in-front of a big bus, not only that but crossing the road increases the risk of becoming a foul of traffic. It’s not very likely for tragic to pass the red lights in my district. However I have heard & seen it happen. Thank goodness no one was hurt otherwise it would be pretty traumatizing & scary. I never needed to board the left though in the mornings. Only the right.

I have to cross children both in the morning and afternoon. The hand signal has been in place for many years, here in Ohio. We use straight down, as not to confuse other motorists around us. If we signal in a crossing motion, or a waving motion, or any other motion, it could be misconstrued by stopped motorists and they may take the motion as an invitation for them to pass the bus. It is also Ohio revised code that we get our children to and from their residence side of the road. So, if they live on the left side of the street, we have the children cross with us...their place of safety will be on their residence side of the road. This also fulfills what is required by us, by law. I hope that makes sense. On a separate note, pulling the bus to a position that will block traffic in both directions, may seem like a great way to stop traffic, but is not legal.
